Case prototyping
[Deviant Ollam], lockpicker and beverage cooling contest host, was ... More
[Deviant Ollam], lockpicker and beverage cooling contest host, was recently in Vienna, presumably for DeepSec. While there, he stopped by the Metalab hackerspace and checked out their RepRap rapid prototyping machine. You can see video of his visit above. He had them construct a custom fitted cover for the flash of his point and shoot camera. That’s what we love about rapid prototyping. Many of the projects we cover here solve a particular problem, but would never be considered commercially viable enough to put into production. With the availability of rapid prototyping increasing, hackers can start moving toward producing even more complex objects specific to their needs with a finish closer to commercial products. Less

[Kottke] posted advice for watching and sharing high quality YouTube videos. While it’s not HD quality, it’s much, much better than the normal, fuzzy quality you get on most videos. This hack has been available for some time, but it hasn’t been documented very well until now. When you’re logged in, you can just set the default to “Always play higher-quality video when it’s available”. When you’re linking to a video, add &fmt=18 to the YouTube URL. This also works when you’re embedding the link in WordPress. If you’re not in WordPress, then tack &ap=%2526fmt%3D18 onto each URL in the embeddable code. It’s pretty simple, and makes wasting your day at work much more enjoyable. Less

Promoting Your Blog Through Diverse Content and Media
Digital Products Review - Podcasts powered by Odiogo
I used to keep my head in the sand as an affiliate marketer. I did ... More
I used to keep my head in the sand as an affiliate marketer. I did one thing. I promoted Clickbank products. Why? The high commission percentage. It’s a rush when a sale can get you anywhere from $20 to $100 in commissions. But I only tried a few things. Didn’t step out of the seo box much. But there is more than SEO. There is simply spreading out your network also with social sites that provide you with profiles that link back to your blog. Who cares if the link is dofollow! Use what you like, pictures you take, updates you make and videos you take to draw other people in who are interested in the same topics. Social networks are traffic in motion. I have had pages on my blogs get a surge in hits months after their submission to the site. Did I submit them myself? No! I submitted other peoples posts and when they requested I promote a story, if I liked it I did. And a miraculous thing happened. Posts from my blog started getting submissions. I gained more followers with the process who would in turn visit my blogs regularly. And all it took was submitting sites I like. Videos get traffic from other avenues. I have a growling Chihuahua video that I think is at around 600 viewings. And you know what. I just took it and uploaded it. I was fascinated with Kombucha tea at one time and uploaded images of the brewing process. I uploaded these to Flickr and got invited to add them to a group there. Videos and pictures are so easy these days. They are easier than writing and can be done on the move. I guess I can throw in podcasts also. It seems to be all that the Blogger and Podcaster magazines that I brought back from Blog World Expo are about. And all of this is pretty new to me right now but there is a lot of potential in not narrowing down your promotional efforts to just SEO or just PPC or just article marketing. But you are on social sites now. The key is not to spam. Be yourself and sell on your blog. Don’t push your content or products. Find great content and sites that you like, take pictures and videos related to what you like, talk about what you like in your updates and if your blog is truly on a topic you enjoy, you will notice a rise in traffic and subscribers. I don’t follow spam and a few years online is all it takes to spot a spammer a mile a way. But I do believe in automation at times. There are many people in many networks that may be interested in what you have to offer as long as what you have to offer is not your own posts or sales pitches. Instead promote the shit out of cool content and feel the reciprocation and you will also find new followers in these networks because you are truly promoting content that you like. And then sell on your blog, which also takes a bit of tact but that is too much to cover in this post. Here are some top social media principles. And everything has it’s place. I use delicious to archive knowledge, StumbleUpon for cool posts and pages. SocialMedian for about the same. I dabble in Mixx and Propeller. Twine for more intellectual topics. I also use Flickr and YouTube. And of course, Twitter. And then I send all of these to Friendfeed and I set up Friendfeed to send any new StumbleUpon links to Twitter as well as the posts to my blogs. I am late to all of these and I approached them slowly, wanting to be a good if somewhat semi-active member. So there is software to multiply your efforts with your various types of content promotion. And like I said, tact. Really cool = comment on the post and submit it everywhere with one click. Kind of cool = pick and choose. Shozu I just found this one. It is a mobile service. But it does a lot and also has desktop app. It has a copy cat function for pictures and videos that will take them and upload them to multiple sites at the same time that is pretty amazing. Ping.fm This will take a text update and blast it to multiple services at the same time. TubeMogul TubeMogul is a free service that provides a single point for deploying uploads to the top video sharing sites, and powerful analytics on who, what, and how videos are being viewed. SocialMarker Send a link or comment about a page to up to 160 sites. Not at once, but one by one. Still it saves time if you want to submit a site to multiple social sites. Friends, let’s join hands So each of us won’t perish on his own: We are living in a global, interconnected world, where everyone depends on everyone, and on “the flap of a butterfly’s wings” in a “small village.” We have to join hands! We have to make the world round, instead of polar. We have to become friends and relatives, instead of enemies and competitors. We have to follow the law of Nature or the Creator – “Love they neighbor as thyself.” We must only decide that there is no other way to live, and desire to live in this new world. Then - from above - we will receive the mind and forces to do this. This is what Kabbalists have done for centuries. If we don’t, then the crises will grow worse, and through them the Creator or Nature will force us to observe His laws of Globality, Harmony, Unity, and Adhesion with Him. Share This Less

About eight years ago a beer advertisement in the United States became a cultural phenomenon when it popularized the expression “Wassup!?” (a play on the greeting: “What’s up?”). It was an advertisement about “living the America dream” (watching a football game, having a beer, and all the rest): Now there’s an updated version of this ad, showing where the “Wussup!?” guys have ended up: I hope that Americans – who are sobering up - will soon realize that there is no way around the law of nature - “Humanity is one family,” and will start following it. Video streams on Yahoo! dramatically increased in September to 265 ... More
Video streams on Yahoo! dramatically increased in September to 265 million, up 56 percent from August's 169 million. The new traffic puts Yahoo! ahead of *Fox Interactive, which had been number two to YouTube. Monthly video streams on YouTube have broken the astounding five billion mark with 5.3 billion streams, up 12 percent, according to unpublished results provided by Nielsen Online to Beet.TV. Earlier this week at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable in New York, Kelsey interviewed Jimmy Pitaro, head of entertainment and sports at Yahoo! about the company's approach to video. He told her that Yahoo has blurred the lines between user-generated and professional content with videos like the Shakira "Hips Don't Like" fan mash-up, which was the number one video on Yahoo for a number of months. He also describes Yahoo's live streaming, on-demand and original content offerings. While the Yahoo! numbers pale in comparison to Google's YouTube, much of Yahoo!'s video has advertising. Google is only selling ads against four percent of YouTube videos, according to a report this summer in The Wall Street Journal. Here is the table of results provided to Beet.TV from Nielsen Online. Here is most recent public release on video site traffic by comScore - it shows that "all Google" sites exceeded 5 billion streams in July, with 98 percent attributed to YouTube. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer *Fox Interactive includes MySpaceTV, Photobucket, Fox Television Studios, FOX Broadcasting, IGN Entertainment Gaming Network, and Rotten Tomatoes Less

At MySpaceTV, some two-thirds of videos are consumed on user profile pages, according to Cristian Cussen speaking yesterday at the Beet.TV online Video Roundtable. Fellow panelist Laura Lee from YouTube said that a social referrel is a big driver along with search on Google and YouTube. For the Truveo, the giant AOL-owned search engine, a big driver of video consumption is the presentation of related videos which drives two thirds of the search results, said Peter Kocks. Finishing up this segment on search and discoverability was Suranga Chandratillakes, CEO of Blinkx. Andy Plesser Less

Where to Get Live Election Night Coverage Online
The 2008 election and online video have had a lot of special moment... More
The 2008 election and online video have had a lot of special moments together: The CNN-YouTube primary debates. Obama Girl. Will.i.am’s “Yes We Can.” Saturday Night Live’s “Fey-lin” skits. And even though those examples might lean to the left, online video isn’t just a liberal thing. Both the Obama and McCain campaigns have active YouTube accounts, and in September, the McCain account had nearly three times as many average views per video as its rival’s. And no fewer than nine outlets offered live online video of the presidential debates. But those were simply viral videos and two-hour events coming straight from the official debate stream. For election night, the fun starts early and could continue all night. There will be red and blue states to call, voter fraud to police, polling lines to record, partisan parties to tune into, and pundits, pundits, pundits. For those who want more detail, perspective or partisanship than TV broadcasts offer — or for the election-obsessive looking to build a multi-platform election night command center — we’ve sniffed out a few of the election night options to choose from. Shared with me by Charlene Chausis. MSAD48 is doing something rather interesting for their high school seniors. Upon entering senior year, every student is given a unique domain name to be used for “work on their resume, portfolio and communicate with their class.” I would assume that when they leave the school at the end of the year, they will be taking it with them to be used throughout their college and professional years. See the video below for more… I most definitely applaud their efforts in this, and wonder why more schools don’t do the same? In fact, taking it a step further, shouldn’t they be getting their own domain name in Freshman year? Or even in middle school? At what point is it too early to be preparing students for a life online? Less

Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST iPhone at WalMart by Andrew McCaskey It looks like the iPhone is going deep for distribution. November 15, the iPhone will be available at US Walmart stores. I can only hope that there is a better outcome than the Acer Vista Laptop special from 2007. I stepped into that line and came away with a very good price on a Vista laptop. It has only recently returned from it’s third trip under warranty and now - with a new motherboard replacement, it seems to be on track. The net cost - in money, time and aggravation addes up to one of the most expensive laptops I have ever owned - and customer satisfaction in the cellar (although I can be sure how much of the blame goes to Acer and how much goes to Vista). Neither is on the personal buy list. Ever again. The move by Apple to push the iPhone through the same retail channel is either going to be a boon or bust. It should be just in time for what has been the biggest shopping day of the year - the Friday following the Thanksgiving holiday. With coverage in Walmarts and over 1200 Best Buy stores, there should be no person in the country that will be more than 20 miles from an iPhone outlet by this holiday season. Even Walmart is going to have trouble moving this one. This year.
