Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Apple’s New Opportunity by Andrew McCaskey Apple’s Second Chance Apple has a chance to make another big contribution to the world of podcasting. And, it’s not for any altruistic reason - it is another revenue point just waiting to be tapped. The iTunes Music store happened at the right time to build the base of podcasting - a podcatcher or receiver that interfaced directly with an extremely popular portable player, within a trusted user interface. Apple immediately benefited from a wealth of user generated content, available for free that would draw people to the iTunes music store. The music discovery process on some podcasts undoubtably drove business to the Apple iTunes Music Store. And, as time passed, the independent podcasts were generally replaced (at least in the Top 100) by corporate produced content. Here’s a chance for Apple to make some more money The rumored podcast download capability on the next iPhone software upgrade could be an opportunity for Apple to cash in on a large part of that user generated media. Very simply, use the App store ecommerce engine (already tied to the phone number and credit card) to process monthly subscription payments for podcasts. Say $2 or $3 a month. Then, the podcaster could present two feeds- one feed including advertising content, the other paid subscription being ad free. A listener could make the choice, the podcaster (just like the iPhone app programmer) could receive payment for those listeners who chose to upgrade, Apple could rake 30% off the top, and the listener could elect to listen to the regular program, including ads, just as before. End of the month, the timer points back to the version with ads - or the podcaster could set up annual subscription plans. How About It ? The Washington Post is reporting that the shutdown of one hosting company has caused the total volume of spam to drop by 2/3rds. The company in question is McColo Corp. Both Hurricane Electric and Global Crossing pulled the plug today after a damning report revealed a number of illegal activities happening on McColo’s servers. McColo already had a reputation with the security community. When contacted about abuse, the company would often shift servers to new IP ranges instead of shutting them down. Although not the main source of spam, the company was host to many botnet control servers and phishing sites. [photo: mattdork] [via Waxy]        Less

That is a pretty good analogy to the online video business - the latest chunk of which is the notice that MGM will be placing full length movie content on YouTube. Apparently there is also an agreement in the works for Lionsgate for television shows and short form materials as well. The success of Hulu and direct materials from MSNBC have resulted in episodes that pulled more viewers online that over the air - and that is for a hit show like 30 Rock. The election introduced millions of people who had not consumed online video to the idea of clips, timeshifted and linked/embedded sent to friends for a quick laugh or to make a point. They are just small bits - but like pebbles that roll down the mountain along with larger rocks, they all clutter the roadbed. Our local CBS Affiliate has just proudly announced the construction of a $40 Million Broadcast television center. That is a lot of money to be placed into the 80th largest media market, when the technology is moving so quickly. If the demographic that watches broadcast television matches the national trends, it may not be the most far-sighted investment- unless you are going for an over 55 audience that has lots of time to watch TV but other than that is not particularly desirable for advertisers. For younger viewers, the competition for attention moves to a variety of online video options- or DVD/Roku/Netflix options or PS. You can only hope that broadcasters get a quick return on their money before the falling rocks turn into a landslide. His new book, MORE INFORMATION THAN YOU REQUIRE was released just a couple of weeks ago. Hodgman himself describes this series as the dramatization of "true tale[s] of romance, adventure, infamy, and low-cost prescription drugs, all culled from the reams of actual, unsolicited emails, received here by us and people like you -- what we call SPAM." Today's installment: V1V4 M3X1CO., in which we explore supply chain management solicitations with the help of luchadores, mariachis, beautiful black-n-white señoritas from the silver screen of our abuelitos, and GIANT NARCO-KITTEHS WITH UZIS. A note from our musical director: The adaptation of Jean-Joseph Mouret's "Rondeau: Fanfare" (1735) which opens today's episode was remixed in flagrante 8-bit by Hamhocks Buttermilk Johnson. Most of the day has been spent trying out CamTwist for the MacMini, and BoinxTV for the MacBook Pro. I feel sure that there will be some additional PC based hardware in the mix before it is all over. Combining unknown software, beta test evaluations and consumer grade video hardware may well be the prescription for disaster. On the other hand, the CES coverage with Flip cameras turned out to generate such interest that this entire field of informal video is a great opportunity. There are all sorts of outlets available for distribution: Vimeo, Blip.tv, stickam, justin.tv, ustream.tv and there must be a host of others. For CMS, we are looking to team with some of the RawVoice members for the coverage, and provide both streaming and recorded content. Let me know if you will be in Denver Dec 4-5. I ran into this site the other day. It’s called Twittin’ Secrets: 100+ Of The World’s Greatest Twitter Tips & Twitter Secrets. Speaking of spam, the way I started this post gave me a de ja vu feeling of the last time I visited an article scraper blog. I need to watch it. I like Twitter. And if you compare my initial reaction to Twitter to the way I use it now, you might say I love Twitter. When I first heard of it, I thought it was useless. What can you say with that much of a limit? What use is it to know what someone else is doing right this second? The limit on Twitter makes it fast. The limit on Twitter makes it easy and quick. The quickness of Twitter may mean you meet a much different person than the “blogger” you are used to. And who needs an article when a few sentences will do. It is also much easier to follow 1000 people on Twitter than keep up with 100 blogs. And those people who use Twitter most likely will announce the biggest news there first. They will announce their newest posts, deals they found and any possible big news related to their interests. A “Tweet” can be scanned. It’s a bite sized piece of info. Usually self-contained, but if there is a link, you can choose to follow it or not. Following people on Twitter saves time. It gives you the overview. So back to spam. You might have already checked out the link. Every person defines spam for themselves. Most black hat techniques are white hat techniques taken to the extreme. How far you take things is up to you. Some of what I see there, I would call spam. But I think car salesman are air spammers. Hype hides a lot of things. But seeing something like Twitter marketing at the extreme end of it’s scale gives you many more options. You can see more of what is possible and then choose what you want to do. You might see some things you missed in your own exploration, new tactics to try. So take a look at what this guy has for you and learn to use Twitter, because you are missing out if you’re not. Starting following people until you get it and one day, Twitter will just be an extension of what you do. Less

Daily TIPs, Spam, Data breaches Neil Savage wrote: Little Headway Gained Against Spam and Malware A report from Commtouch, a maker of antimalware, says the amount of spam on the Internet remains fairly constant, despite the efforts of companies to counter it. Botnets, in which viruses infect computers and allow them to be used to dispatch spam, continue unabated, says Ars Technica, with Turkey, Brazil, and Russia leading the pack of “zombified” machines in the second quarter of 2008. Supreme Court Judge Illustrates How File Sharers Risk Personal Data One source of data breaches that Internet users should be aware of are peer-to-peer software programs such as Limewire. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer found that out the hard way, when a file sharing program exposed his social security number. The Washington Post’s Security Fix blog expands on the newspaper’s story. Everyone’s Talking the Global Warming Talk, Few Walking Despite statements from world leaders that talks on global warming by the G8 industrialized nations were productive, the agreement actually has very few concrete goals to curb carbon emissions, says the New York Times. One climatologist, Michael Schlesinger at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, characterized the results as “talking the talk” rather than “walking the walk.” Offshore Wind Energy Mapped by NASA Companies looking for sites to place offshore wind turbines can thank NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for identifying the best spots. CNET News reports that 10 years of satellite data led to a map showing the sites where wind is steady and strong for most of the year. California Startup Seeks to Reuse Carbon Emissions Carbon Sciences, a startup in Santa Barbara, CA, says it has developed a relatively simple method to take the carbon dioxide emitted during mining operations and turn it into precipitated calcium carbonate, or PCC. The Environmental News Network report s that the company hopes to keep the carbon out of the atmosphere by turning it into useful products, at the same time earning money from what used to be waste. PCC is a component of many everyday products, including paper, wallboard, and fertilizer. Earthquake Prediction May be Coming Imagine if state and city governments could get 10 hours’ notice that an earthquake was expected, giving them time to evacuate their citizens and start an emergency response. Scientists at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC, have discovered subtle geological changes that occur hours before a quake and might lead to such an early warning system, reports MSNBC. It will take more study, and possibly another decade or two, to develop such a system, the researchers say. Volt’s Gas Tank to Be Smaller, Says GM General Motors has been hyping its Chevy Volt, a car that would run 40 miles on a battery before having to burn gasoline to keep going. While the original plan was to have a 12-gallon tank that would allow the Volt to travel 600 miles after the battery ran out, using the gas engine to recharge the battery, the KickingTires blog reports that’s changing. GM won’t say how many gallons the redesigned tank will hold, but the range has been reduced to 360 miles. Comments | Permalink | Share |  E-mail Less

Audacity of Audacity by Andrew McCaskey I get a big charge out of the recurring theme that security is often the weakest in the most obvious places. The publicity surrounding identity theft, corporate espionage and general mischief obscures the more consistent threat of social engineering. The story today concerns the news item from DarkReading.com of a penetration team that relies upon faked documents, timing, projection of authority and capitalizes upon the good nature and willingness to help for successful compromise time after time. One of the consequences of an open society is that the helpfulness of strangers is often an open door invitation to social engineering. Telecommuting from remote areas of the country into metro areas is becoming more and more common. Expect to see those who specialize in the dark arts to start to probe those isolated employees as opportunity for technical and social espionage. Let’s Hope Not by Andrew McCaskey The video today concerns the full attack that was conducted against Estonia - a bit of public awareness on the scope and severity of botnet attack on a small but well defended country. The early hours of the attack concentrated upon newspapers, banks, radio and television sites and other critical infrastructure. Sound like a familiar strategy ? The quick reaction of the Estonians to purposely disconnect their networks from the outside world preserved their systems, and only through the cooperation of sys admins around the world was the attacking botnet neutralized one IP block at a time. The question raised by the video is not will the attack scale - but will it scale quickly enough to be an offensive weapon against a determined defender. Conversely, if the defender is not payng attention the scale might not be nearly as important. It is hard to imagine the effect that a well timed cyber attack, in combination with perhaps 40 cities under attack by two man teams operating along the lines of the DC mobile snipers in the days immediately after 9/11. Hard to realize the damage that could be caused by less than 100 bad guys and say $100Million to hire a botnet for a weekend. That’s even more to be concerned about than $7 a gallon gasoline. Funny, I’ve never heard this in any of the debates. Takes too long to tell the story. Click to view videos submitted or recommended by other SDR podcast listeners. . . Stop Email Forwards and Video Emails

Stop Email Forwards and Video Emails

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed I received the following email the other day from Doug: I’m still surprised at times when I get an e-mail forwarded to me that claims something is true without anyone having checked the validity of the contents. I recently got an e-mail regarding a Dr Dobson petition, and there were almost 3000 names on it already when it came to me. To me it should be common practice to people to do a quick & simple internet search to find out more information before blindly forwarding stuff to everyone on your contacts list. Even if the e-mail already has a link attempting to validate the information, I’m going to want more than one source reporting the same thing. One person forwarding an e-mail with 0-1 sources does not validate the contents. I will usually copy/paste some main part of the text into Google and I’ll typically quickly find several resources that discuss the origin and validity of the information in the e-mail. Then I will reply to all on the e-mail I got and post a few of those links letting them know where to find more information and encouraging them to do likewise in the future when they get e-mails like this and are tempted to forward them to people. I would like to think that the audience that watch your videos are internet savvy enough to already know this but even if they are, perhaps they would encourage their circle of contacts (friends, relatives, community, etc) to squash useless e-mail chains instead of fueling them. What the world needs now is more useful information and less useless information to fill up our in-boxes, bog down the mail servers, and waste our time reading the garbage. So I wanted to see how you felt about doing a video to your audience on this topic. One of the first things you should do when receiving an email claiming “You’ll save this little girl’s life by forwarding this!”, or “Send me to ten friends right now!”… is to check with Snopes. The Snopes website is a huge ‘database’ full of urban legends and truths. I’ll bet 99% of the time that the email chains you receive are useless junk. As Doug stated in his email, you can also paste a small part of the text of the email into Google, and research it. Don’t blindly forward an email like these. Know what it is you’re sending out. Know whether it’s even legitimate or not. Also, stop sending emails to people with videos embedded in them. It’s horrible to do! There are SO many places online you can host the video for free. Then, just send out the link to the video. It’s smaller, and faster to send a simple link to someone. It’s just not cool to send entire videos in an email. Rocket Spanish! *New* Higher Payout!
