Innovating New Winners in Established Markets
Software, innovation, management Brent Frei wrote: I’m attrac... More
Software, innovation, management Brent Frei wrote: I’m attracted to the market opportunity within large, established markets. These markets already have huge spend, they have established dominant players with an inertia resistant to major change, most of the innovative talent and money is off in new market spaces, and innovation within these spaces tends to be evolutionary in nature and follow predictable paths. Identifying a large market that can serve as an appropriate target is often as simple as listening for the drumbeat of consistent comments like: — “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” — “I wish there was a…” — “Why doesn’t somebody invent a…” The revolutionary innovation that occurs in many of these markets is often serendipitous. That means someone isn’t looking to solve the end problem, but something they did is applicable to it. See, for example, Viagra or Post-Its. More often than not, however, the real revolutionary innovation is in line with the evolutionary. Therefore, pick a really big market and do something revolutionary within the natural evolution of the space. So the key question becomes: what is it that successful inventors do to be revolutionarily successful within an evolution? The current modern wonder of revolution within evolution is the Apple iPhone. Apple’s formula for innovation in mature markets is the gold standard. How do they do this? My assessment is that they follow two simple principles: —Design for how people work. —Consolidate and reduce core concepts to a ridiculous minimum; a core concept is anything the customer has to learn or understand in order to successfully use your product. Mobile phones, e-mail on Blackberries and Treos, MP3 music players—all of these existed separately and with ever-expanding feature sets. The race toward consolidation had been going on for some time; but it carried with it the complex, rich feature sets of each independent device. Apple, with its special magic, stuck with the less-is-more approach and let’s make the …Next Page » Comments | Permalink | Share | E-mail Less

iPhone apps might some day be the gold mine for advertising. In the meanwhile, we are seeing the emergence of a new trend: iPhone apps as ads. Hollywood studios are the first ones to react and using free applications to promote its movies. We are totally loving the new app for the latest Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. More than just a micro-site, the Bond application lets you watch the movie trailers and read up about the movie. It also pushes you out to the iTunes music store if you want to you want to purchase Jack White’s throbbing theme song from the film. Of course others have more immersive apps. The Dark Knight, for example has come up with a way to add some Joker-style graffiti to photos of your friends. Use the touch screen to drag and rotate elements and then save and send them as you like. Bolt, Disney’s forthcoming animated canine adventure has released an app which is essentially a free stripped down Super Monkey game for a very subtle hand. All three apps, however, lack the seemingly most obvious feature - the ability to actually purchase tickets for the movie. That much imagination would be too much to ask from Hollywood, but we are happy that they are thinking about ways to promote their movies on screens that matter. Less

Know What Your Tech and Life Sciences Executive Peers Are Paid? Compensation Study Tells All—Plus New Insights on Clean-Tech CEO Pay
Life Sciences, IT, energy Ryan McBride wrote: It’s too early ... More
Life Sciences, IT, energy Ryan McBride wrote: It’s too early to know the full impact of the economic meltdown on executive compensation at private technology and life sciences companies. Alas, 2008—or at least the first three fiscal quarters of it—could be viewed next year as the end of the good old days of executive compensation. Still, for those of you who want to know how much your executive peers’ at said private tech and life sciences companies were compensated this year (or at least the pre-meltdown part of the year), your cup runneth over with the recently completed 2008 Compensation and Entrepreneurship Report in Life Sciences and a similarly titled report in information technology. The annual studies—conducted by the J. Robert Scott executive search agency, law firm WilmerHale, Ernst & Young, and academics at Harvard Business School [disclosure: the first two are Xconomy underwriters]—showed a continued trend that Bob noted last year of steady growth in executive compensation across the board in both life sciences (which in this post means medical devices too) and technology. And an interesting feature of the technology compensation study is the inclusion of clean technology companies for the first time. (Read on to see how their pay compared with executives in other segments of the tech industry. A hint: not great.) Xconomy isn’t big on covering studies, because many lack the depth to draw serious conclusions, but these compensation studies appear to be quite thorough. The reports are based on compensation data from multiple private companies (342 from tech and 189 from life sciences), with a wide swath of executives (1,600 executives with 10 different job titles on the tech side, and 1,000 executives with 13 job classifications in life sciences). And all U.S. regions are accounted for—so our communities of readers in Boston, San Diego, and Seattle can see where they stack up next to each other (again, see our chart of the results on the next page). Also, the figures were gathered from April to June 2008. I don’t want to touch the argument on whether electrical engineering courses are more difficult than microbiology, but the studies show that life sciences CEOs typically earn more than their tech counterparts, with average 2008 base salaries of $300,000 for top life sciences executives, up 6.7 percent from $281,000 in 2007, and $236K for the tech chief executives, a 4.2-percent increase from $227K last year. Though not explicit in these reports, perhaps it should be noted that the smaller size of the life sciences industry compared with IT, and the high degree of scientific/technological variation among life sciences firms, could make this compensation gap between the two camps a matter of supply and demand. I’m just speculating, though. …Next Page » Comments | Permalink | Share | E-mail Less

And, it’s not for any altruistic reason - it is another revenue point just waiting to be tapped. The iTunes Music store happened at the right time to build the base of podcasting - a podcatcher or receiver that interfaced directly with an extremely popular portable player, within a trusted user interface. Apple immediately benefited from a wealth of user generated content, available for free that would draw people to the iTunes music store. The music discovery process on some podcasts undoubtably drove business to the Apple iTunes Music Store. And, as time passed, the independent podcasts were generally replaced (at least in the Top 100) by corporate produced content. Here’s a chance for Apple to make some more money The rumored podcast download capability on the next iPhone software upgrade could be an opportunity for Apple to cash in on a large part of that user generated media. Very simply, use the App store ecommerce engine (already tied to the phone number and credit card) to process monthly subscription payments for podcasts. Say $2 or $3 a month. Then, the podcaster could present two feeds- one feed including advertising content, the other paid subscription being ad free. A listener could make the choice, the podcaster (just like the iPhone app programmer) could receive payment for those listeners who chose to upgrade, Apple could rake 30% off the top, and the listener could elect to listen to the regular program, including ads, just as before. End of the month, the timer points back to the version with ads - or the podcaster could set up annual subscription plans. How About It ? Om Malik compares Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) with cockroaches. Both are equally desirable Yet despite trials and failure in both Virginia and Michigan, IBM has now accepted almost $10M for a study that could result in construction of $70M BPL trials in several states, eventually serving 340,000 homes. If you could call 256kb/s Broadband and if you could get past the destructive effect that it has on amateur radio emergency communications - it still is a technology that Google has tried and ignored. It’s still a technology that even the companies backing the proposal in Manassas VA decided to withdraw, and concentrate on remote device control. The FCC bears some culpability, having been an enthusiastic backer of the technology since the days when Michael Powell was FCC Chairman. I think there are two reasons: The cost of the project is covered by $70M from the Department of Agriculture - and that is not even rounding error in today’s subsidization world. Secondly, IBM is a services business. If you wanted the study the practicality of Tesla Coils driven by computerized Solar Collectors, IBM would help you study it for $9.6M. If you were really smart, you would call it Banking Over PowerLine (BPL) and move the decimal two places. On second thought even $7Billion is a footnote. Need another zero. Is IBM up to the task ?
