A jazzy version of the Inspector Gadget theme song. Apologies in advance if it gets stuck in your head. My entry for this month's 'theme song' music challenge started out as a generic pop tune about two best friends, worked it's way into a rap about Alf and when all was said and done wound up not being an eligible entry at all with this... a jazzy remake of the Inspector Gadget theme song. I'm still not sure how that happened, but I'm glad it did. Actually, one of my old bands used to play something similar to this, so it's nice to finally have put together a recording of it. Hope you enjoy it. Less

The Dangers of Buying an Older House by cortex

A moody composition on behalf of the things in our new house that very much want us to know we were there first. Happy Halloween! I've never really done something quite like this before, and it was a lot of fun putting it together. Viva the music challenges, which I've been failing to live up to for too long now. We haven't actually noticed any ghosts or geists or misc. paranormal citizenry in the house since we moved in, but I did my best to make up for it by getting as much ambient house audio on this as possible. Also: pots-and-wooden-spoons percussion. Less

Instrumental banjo waltz, written this afternoon. I may or may not ever play this song again, so I felt like making a public record of it in the event of the latter. Less

Demented Children's Songs by csimpkins

A nightmarish take on children's music. I always imagine myself stuck in a carnival funhouse being chased around by evil clowns when I listen to this. From 1995 and one of the first songs I ever wrote. Some completely out of control layering towards the end! Pardon the production quality. This was put together with an old school Casio knockoff midi keyboard being controlled by Jazz midi sequencer on my Windows 98 box when I knew almost nothing about what I was doing. Still don't, really... but I smile just thinking about the old setup. :) Less

A quick 'n' dirty instrumental with some mute-picking that sort of sounds like violin plucking. But isn't. This is actually music for a documentary film I'm making (shameless plug!), trailer here. This particular piece is for a short vignette about one of the subjects of the doc. Less

This is an instrumental, and the "biggest" song I've ever tried to record. It has some really nice vocals by Leah Wilmoth (who sang in my last upload), and a CACGBC tuned guitar. Also a banjolele. I haven't heard it on speakers, yet. I would love to hear any thoughts on this piece. This got up to more than a dozen tracks on GarageBand, which is pretty new territory for me. Thus it has some fuzzy parts, and my general lack of rhythm makes for some funkiness, but overall I like it. It's something like 6 minutes long, but hopefully it doesn't get too boring. Since it was at so many tracks already, I decided to not even mess with percussion. Anyone is welcome to try, if they'd like. I'd love to hear it. Or to add anything else, that's cool too. Less

I took an old 45rpm of a Japanese folk song and started dropping the needle. Took those bits, sliced 'em up and moved 'em around a little, then added some synth and electric piano, some udu and guiro. Et voila! Le Japonisme! Less

Trancy and ethereal. Intended to be an interpretation of a dream that a friend had told me about. Recorded in 1999 when my head wasn't in a very good place. I was tempted to delete the piece altogether, but I changed my mind. Art need not come from good circumstances to be good art. Less

In an attempt to branch out a bit, I made this song entirely on the keyboard. Most of my songs are pretty sample-heavy but this one has almost no samples at all, just the drum loop, which is severely cut up and re-arranged. A good song to listen to when cruising in orbit in your spaceship. Less

A currently-instrumental hip hop beat in progress. I've been trying to remix this song for a long time, and this is the best I've managed to come up with so far. Looking for opinions, instruments you think might fit well, or if you're hearing something while listening to it that you think should be there.. any input is appreciated.. It's pretty bare bones at the moment, because I'm unsure about where to go from here, or even if it's a good starting point really.. this will eventually be a Fulz/Karkass joint.. Less

Just another overly long drum machine heavy metal guitar demo from 7 or 8 years ago. The last of the songs I recorded using a Smokey amp pointed at my laptop. The low fi days before I discovered Line6 products. Poor drum sequencing courtesy of Acoustica Beatcraft. This song was little more then a collection of riffs with no direction or point, that for some reason I saw fit to play over and over until nearly 9 minutes of your life have been wasted. I have countless hours of songs like this at varying stages of unfinished, just ideas I throw down on tape so that I can maybe take riffs from them later.. Less

A piano-based melody written for my animated short film "Gone" (hear it in context). I tried to play around with the time signature a bit in this song. I wrote it in 4/4 but then shifted some sections so that I think the end result is a song that kind of fluctuates between 4/4 and 3/4. Although I really don't know what I'm talking about. I just know the beat is semi-weird. The other interesting thing here is the middle section, which features guitar strings being manipulated in an entirely wrong way with an ebow, resulting in random seagull-like sounds amidst ominous organ chords. More on my short film at MetaFilter Projects. Less

A song for a special girl. Solo GarageBand piano, some wrong(?!) notes, lots of suspendy chords. This piece makes me a little embarrassed to admit I was a music major in college. I recorded it in a take or two and didn't edit it much afterward. But I like it anyway. Less

An abstract electronic piece; some of the piano riffs later through the song sound like they're being pushed too fast, which led me to the title. Another attempt at working with Logic Express to produce something that sounds cool. Much of the piano is myself, most everything else is samples. This is definitely background music, but should fill that role well. Less
