Flash sync port hacking

Reader [Adrian] picked up a couple cheap wireless flash triggers on eBay. Unfortunately, his Sigma EF-500 DG Super strobe doesn’t have the necessary sync port to make use of these. He popped the device open to try to figure out a way to trigger the device manually. The first idea was to use the test button to fire the device. Thanks to lag, it didn’t work for anything under 1/20th. The solution was to go straight for the optical trigger. [Adrian] has posted some teardown pictures that will help you determine the appropriate solder points for your own mod. The only bit that’s left is adding a 3.5mm mono headphone jack as a sync port. He also has a post on modifying the flash for greater head movement. Less

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed When I was preparing to do a video on classic gaming, I wondered where I could send all of you to play high quality games. I then remembered a site that has tons of classic games, along with media fun. On Neave, you’ll find things to keep you entertained for days on end. Internet TV startup Joost is ditching its downloadable desktop software, as NewTeeVee previously reported. But now the company is taking things a step further, to give users the option to access the site without even downloading a P2P browser plug-in. All its content and new social features will be available in Flash, with higher definition, live, and some international programming only available with download of a “premium” (but still free) plug-in. The premium version of the site is open to the public today; the standard version will launch in mid-October. Read more at NewTeeVee Less

I interviewed the co-CEO Avishai Abrahami of web content platform Wix in the TechCrunch50 demo pit last week. Wix opened their beta to the public June 25, and users can now ue the platform to make widgets and websites which TechCrunch described as "candy-coated." Wix is a great alternative for small businesses who want flash-based websites without paying thousands of dollars. To read more about the company, check out Techcrunch's early analysis here. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer Less

iPhone screengrab issues
This is unfortunately another story we missed out on while we were ... More
This is unfortunately another story we missed out on while we were trying to keep things from burning down. We told you that [Jonathan Zdziarski] was going to demonstrate iPhone lock code bypassing in a webcast. The real surprise came when he pointed out that the iPhone takes a screenshot every time you use the home button. It does this so it can do the scaling animation. The image files are presumably deleted immediately, but as we’ve seen before it’s nearly impossible to guarantee deletion on a solid state device. There’s currently no way to disable this behavior. So, even privacy conscious people have no way to prevent their iPhone from filling up storage with screenshots of all their text message, email, and browsing activities. Hopefully Apple will address this problem just like they did with the previous secure erase issue. O’Reilly promises to publish the full webcast soon. [via Gizmodo] Less

PALO ALTO -- The cost of Flash servers, Adobe's proprietary software which publishers use to stream video around the globe has dropped by some 90 percent as Adobe moves to maximize its marketshare, says Jim Guerard, who heads up the Flash business at Adobe Systems. He declared that the "Flash Tax" is history. He says that the costs in service make Flash on par with progressive download and is lower than Windows Media streaming. He made these comments at the Beet.TV online video roundtable at Stanford on July 22. Adobe works with some 20 content delivery networks around the world in providing Flash streaming, he says. In this segment, he says that Adobe is moving from a "revenue share maximization" to a "marketshare maximization model. This sounded like good news to fellow panelist Charlie Tillinghast, president of msnbc.com who gripes in this segment about the high cost of Flash streaming. Adobe surely has the deep pockets and market share to consolidate its position. This might be some tough news to the many CDN's who are basing their businesses on providing http/or progressive download. As Dan Rayburn of Streaming Media, there will be a shakeout coming in the CDN marketplace. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer Less

PALO ALTO -- The cost of Flash servers, Adobe's proprietary software which publishers use to stream the majority of video around the globe, has dropped in cost by some 90 percent as Adobe moves to maximize its marketshare, says Jim Guerard, who heads up the Flash business at Adobe Systems. The initiative, announce late last year, is becoming pervasive with Viacom, CBS, the BBC and others taking advantage of lower pricing, Jim says. He declared that the "Flash Tax" is history. He says that the cost of Flash today is on par with progressive download and lower than Windows Media streaming. He made these comments at the Beet.TV online video roundtable at Stanford on July 22. Adobe works with some 20 content delivery networks around the world in providing Flash streaming, he says. In this segment, he says that Adobe is moving from a "revenue share maximization" to a "market share maximization" model. This sounded like good news to fellow panelist Charlie Tillinghast, president of msnbc.com who gripes in this segment about the high cost of Flash streaming. The cost of streaming is a big budget item for publishers. This could be very good news. Adobe surely has the deep pockets and market share to consolidate its position. This might be some tough news to the many content delivery networks, CDN's, who are basing their businesses on providing http/or progressive download.
