Haiti ‘catastrophe’ from 4th Disaster; still no help in sight, WHY ?

Haiti facing storm ‘catastrophe’ WE Continue to ASK, Where Is The International Humanitarian Assistance To Haiti ? - NONE YET After 4 Hurricanes, WHY UN ? Tropical Storm Hanna has caused widespread flooding in Haiti Haiti faces a “catastrophe” after being hit by a series of storms in recent weeks, President Rene Preval has said. Three storms in less than 21 days have killed 170 people and forced thousands to flee their homes in the Caribbean nation, officials say. The latest, Tropical Storm Hanna, could prove even more deadly than one that killed more than 3,000 people in 2004, Mr Preval warned. Hanna is now approaching the Bahamas, where storm warnings have been issued. At 0030 GMT on Thursday, Hanna was about 355 miles (575km) south-east of Nassau and moving north-west, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) says. Separately, storm Ike has strengthened rapidly into an extremely powerful Category Four hurricane in the open Atlantic, the NHC says. See a map of Atlantic storms However, it says it is too early to determine if Ike poses any threat to land. ‘No water, no food’ “It is believed that compared to Jeanne, Hanna could cause even more damage,” Mr Preval said. The Haitian leader was referring to the deadly Tropical Storm Jeanne which hit the country in 2004. Mr Preval said he would hold emergency talks with donor countries to appeal for aid. In pictures: Haiti floods Eyewitness: Haiti’s ordeals Warming boosts strongest storms Haitian officials say that Hanna has left at least 61 people dead when it struck on Tuesday, but there are fears that the death toll will rise further. The northern city of Gonaives bore the brunt of Hanna’s maximum sustained winds of 100km/h (65mph), with people on roof-tops screaming for help as floods reached depths of 2m (6.5ft). “There are a lot of people who have been on top of the roofs of their homes over 24 hours now. They have no water, no food and we can’t even help them,” Haitian Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime told Reuters news agency. UN peacekeepers and aid workers have been trying to reach stranded survivors. “The situation is as bad as it can be,” the UN’s Vadre Louis told the Associated Press news agency. “The wind is ripping up trees. Houses are flooded with water. Cars can’t drive on the street. You can’t rescue anyone, wherever they may be.” The impoverished Caribbean island was first drenched by Tropical Storm Fay, before Hurricane Gustav wreaked havoc last week, with torrential rainfall over heavily deforested and hilly terrain causing floods and mudslides. © admin for BadGalsRadio - RootsRock since 99', 2008. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us Post tags: caribbean, caricom, Catastrophe, epa, faye, gustav, haiti, hannah, humanitarian racism, hurricanes, ike, no international assistance, no response Feed enhanced by Better Feed from Ozh Less

Continuing the tribute to the living genius of The Great Big Mulp. ... More
Continuing the tribute to the living genius of The Great Big Mulp. Here's the original. I had a mental list of people I wanted to cover for the challenge and picking one wasn't easy. I think in the end what helped me choose the Mulp was seeing ORthey's version of Flyball's Lament the other day. Having a string of his songs covered sounded like a cool way to let thegreatbigmulp know that there's people that really appreciate his songs. Then I was basically trying to choose one of two, since Flyball's Lament was taken. One was Qipheyo (fantastic song), but I didn't have the tools to do a good version (and an acoustic version of that song would have to be superb to really honor the original), so I chose this one, which was in the first bunch of songs that really stood out for me in the early days of Metafilter Music. So, hopefully this "cover another Mefite" challenge -and its variations- will continue, even after the June deadline. I really liked ORthey's version of Flyball's and I'd love to see more people doing versions of other songs from here. Less

Aimé Césaire at the end of dawn

I remembered only this morning that the late, great Martiniquan poet and statesman, Aimé Césaire, who passed away on April 17, was once featured on a Caribbean Free Radio podcast. On CFR #7 (released on March 27, 2005!), I played “Acid”, a track by the Martinquan jazz group Matébis featuring Césaire on “vocals”. Or, more accurately, Césaire intoning, in his impeccably enunciated French, against a musical background, the first few verses of his epic “Notebook of a Return to My Native Land”, beginning with the famously ambiguous opening line “au bout du petit matin” (”at the end of dawn”)–a line widely used in the titles of Césaire documentaries (including the one by Sarah Maldoror) and in press tributes this week. For those who wish to listen to the podcast, my intro to the track begins around 4:00. At the end of it I offer a short outro then segue into a moment of nostalgia for my Martinique days and some musings on multilingualism. Others may click on the player below to hear “Acid” by itself: I’ve already highlighted Global Voices’ lovely compilation of tributes to Césaire from bloggers throughout the world, but Antilles has been keeping tabs (one, two, three) on the tributes pouring forth from the world’s presses. France24 posts a report and video to coincide with today’s burial ceremonies in Fort-de-France, Martinique, and Radio France d’Outre Mer (RFO) dusts off an interesting 2001 documentary (in French) showing Césaire in his role as “homme politique” along with interviews with friends, colleagues and ordinary citizens whose lives he touched in various ways. And now would be as good a time as any to take a look at Euzhan Palcy’s three-part documentary on Césaire’s life and work, which is available from California Newsreel. Less

Cumbia. A demo for an old song I've never recorded properly. I know there is a song somewhere in there, but cumbia is just not meant to be recorded by one person alone, recording track by track. These days, while this country is (or so they say) on the brink of war with Colombia, I've found myself listening to a lot of Colombian music. The Caribbean is indeed a never ending source of great music. (Oh yeah, and the drumming comes from an Egyptian music CD. The lyrics talk about Africa and America (America being Latin America for the purposes of this song) and since the black part of Africa would already be in there as part of the cumbia -which is Afro-Colombian music- I thought it would make sense to include the Arabian part of Africa, and musically it seemed to work).
