Historic Obama Win Also Sets Web Traffic Records

Historic Obama Win Also Sets Web Traffic Records

Politics, Media, Internet Wade Roush wrote: At 11:00 pm Eastern time last night—when the polls closed on the U.S. West Coast and most TV news outlets called the election in favor of the new President-elect, Barack Obama—Internet users streamed to news websites in unprecedented numbers, according to Cambridge, MA-based Akamai. The company, which has been measuring Internet traffic to news, retail, and music websites since 2005, said traffic peaked at about 8.6 million visits per minute, besting the previous record of 7.3 million visits per minute—set on the day Ghana eliminated the U.S. in the 2006 World Cup—by 17 percent. The traffic record obviously reflected the enormous global interest in the U.S. presidential election and in Obama’s history-making triumph. But it’s also a sign that more people around the world are consuming news using several media at once—surfing the news sites and political blogs while also watching the electoral maps light up on TV, for example. “This is the first noted news peak that occurred during the evening hours in North America, meaning Internet users would have accessed likely from home,” Jeff Young, Akamai’s director of corporate communications, told me today. “All the other peak events listed on our index occurred during the work-day hours, when you would expect more people to be at their computers. This shows the significance of the Internet to election coverage.” The third, fourth, and fifth biggest traffic records Akamai has measured came at mid-afternoon on the first day of U.S. college basketball’s “March Madness” in 2008, 2006, and 2007 respectively. The next highest politically-oriented traffic day was the day after the 2006 mid-term elections in the United States, which ranks 15th on the list. As TechCrunch noted in a story earlier today, Akamai’s Net Usage Index aggregates such data continuously, based in part on page-view requests at the more than 100 major news portals that use the company’s global network of Web servers to speed delivery of their stories to readers. Last night’s record wasn’t just a brief spike, either. Traffic to news sites built gradually starting around 4:00 p.m. Eastern time, surpassing 6 million visits per minute shortly after 7:00 p.m. and boiling over at 8,572,042 visits per minute shortly after 11:00 p.m. In fact, any single minute sampled between 7:00 p.m. and midnight would have registered among Akamai’s top five traffic peaks. “If you were to compare against the previous peak, the World Cup game, that was much more of a short-term spike—a lot of traffic, but in a relatively short period of time,” says Young. Traffic is also very high today, he points out—averaging about 4.6 million visits per minute. As a result, November 5 will enter Akamai’s record book somewhere around the number 10 slot. CNN.com and CNN International had received 88 million page views by 3 p.m. this afternoon, three to four times more than on an average weekday, Executive Vice President of CNN News Services Susan Grant told Beet.TV. CNN.com Live, which has four simultaneous live streams, had generated 1.6 million views domestically and internationally--seven times higher than an average full day, she says. Since the election results won't be known until late tonight or tomorrow, she said she expects tomorrow's traffic to be even higher. Andy interviewed Grant at the CNN headquarters this afternoon. She told him election day concerns were focused on the site's capacity to handle the traffic, but that it was handling it fine so far. In the segment, she also discusses CNN's mobile offerings, including its live video feed available through AT&T and Sprint. Andy and I are blogging from the CNN Grill party where bloggers are watching CNN's live coverage. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer Less

On Tuesday, the WSJ.com unveiled a long anticipated site redesign. It launched to record traffic, thanks to upheaval in the financial markets. Yesterday, I sat down with Wall Street Journal Deputy Managing Editor Alan Murray to talk about the redesign. One of the most significant new developments is the "social" aspect of the site. Registered users, using their real names, comment on stories and provide valuable information in a "protected network," Murray tells us. With such a giant base of registered users, who pay for the subscription, this could indeed shape up to be a very smart social network-- and one valuable to advertisers. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer Less

I ran into this site the other day. It’s called Twittin’ Secrets: 100+ Of The World’s Greatest Twitter Tips & Twitter Secrets. Speaking of spam, the way I started this post gave me a de ja vu feeling of the last time I visited an article scraper blog. I need to watch it. I like Twitter. And if you compare my initial reaction to Twitter to the way I use it now, you might say I love Twitter. When I first heard of it, I thought it was useless. What can you say with that much of a limit? What use is it to know what someone else is doing right this second? The limit on Twitter makes it fast. The limit on Twitter makes it easy and quick. The quickness of Twitter may mean you meet a much different person than the “blogger” you are used to. And who needs an article when a few sentences will do. It is also much easier to follow 1000 people on Twitter than keep up with 100 blogs. And those people who use Twitter most likely will announce the biggest news there first. They will announce their newest posts, deals they found and any possible big news related to their interests. A “Tweet” can be scanned. It’s a bite sized piece of info. Usually self-contained, but if there is a link, you can choose to follow it or not. Following people on Twitter saves time. It gives you the overview. So back to spam. You might have already checked out the link. Every person defines spam for themselves. Most black hat techniques are white hat techniques taken to the extreme. How far you take things is up to you. Some of what I see there, I would call spam. But I think car salesman are air spammers. Hype hides a lot of things. But seeing something like Twitter marketing at the extreme end of it’s scale gives you many more options. You can see more of what is possible and then choose what you want to do. You might see some things you missed in your own exploration, new tactics to try. So take a look at what this guy has for you and learn to use Twitter, because you are missing out if you’re not. Starting following people until you get it and one day, Twitter will just be an extension of what you do. Less

What are the best options for products that will have a higher valu... More

What are the best options for products that will have a higher value than an e-book for example? There are various methods for producing products that will have a higher value such as audios, videos, courses DVD training courses etc. The problem is that first you have to get established in your chosen market and often markets outside Internet Marketing it can be difficult to find buyers of $297 DVD training for example. But often buyers will pay a premium for audio as it is easy to listen to while doing something else and it is possible to make audio using free equipment quickly. Video is another way of showing people how to do something either using screen capture or a webcam; this can be done with cheap equipment today. The advantages of using audio and video is that often it can bring more traffic and better ranking for your sites than just submitting text. There are many options for sending your audio and video to sites that will distribute it to many sites and so get more exposure for your site or products. To get started all you need is either a free or cheap software and a microphone that can be purchased for a few dollars, the more expensive then normally the better the sound quality. This looks like the start of a great case study of a blog. I am going to stay tuned. And I suggest you do too. The first part is a great rundown on setting up your blog for traffic. Entrecard Blog » Blog Archive » Startup Blog Project: Part 1 I am setting out to prove that using Entrecard, and only Entrecard, a blog can grow from nothing to very large, and generate a ton of search engine traffic, tons of social media traffic and of course tons of subscribers. So, I know what you’re all thinking and No, I am not going to take advantage of any administrative privileges I have with Entrecard. I’ll be dropping as usual, spending only credits I receive from dropping and advertising, and overall using the system like a normal blogger would. Less

A lot of third party tools usually sprout up around popular sites. Look at all the Firefox addons for sites such as Twitter, Friendfeed, and others. Look at all the tools for use with Ebay. For a while now, everyone has had his or her own scheme on how to get the most out of Entrecard: fast dropping sites, chain dropping and even software. It was good linkbait for attracting other Entrecard users. Well, it seems that Entrecard came out with their own tool lately. And since I use Flock for most of my browsing, I downloaded Firefox 3 to test out the toolbar. And you know what I have to say about it. It’s awesome. It just blew all the third party tools out of the water. Sorry, all you guys who worked hard to get some linkbait. You can change accounts with a drop down box. You can open Entrecard sites one at a time or ten at at time, choosing your Inbox or any one of the categories to browse through. You also know exactly how many drops you made or how many credits you have by looking at the toolbar. And if you want, you can buy ads on the fly, as you are browsing, from the bar. So I would say, if you plan on using Entrecard, get this tool or you will be behind. There is nothing else out there like it.
