Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Astronaut and space hero Dr. Buzz Aldrin speaks with Xeni about his belief that America -- and that means you! -- must return to the moon, and soon. His nonprofit, Sharespace.org, seeks to provide "affordable space travel opportunities for all." Buzz believes that commercial space vacations should not be available only to the wealthy elite. Editor's note: the comment trolls really are taking over around here. One of them invades this very BBtv episode. Teresa, why doesn't disemvowelling work in video? We'll have to get our hamster-engineers right on that. (cameo by BBtv Production Assistant Rob Bergsma) Less

Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST BP Invests a Few Minutes by Andrew McCaskey The item on Verenium’s infusion of $90Million in capital from BP Oil makes a fine news story, and there is a very well done web site at the company. However, I have to wonder how serious all this is - or if it is just a little window dressing PR to try and buy down some of the negative publicity from recent earnings statements on the oil industry. I am not sure how BP is doing, but Exxon-Mobil’s earnings were something like $500,000 in profit during the time that it took to fill my gas tank. US News reports that it’s around half a day’s profits for Exxon Mobil - so I don’t imagine that BP takes much longer to ring up enough cash to spread some around. Let’s just hope that it does some good, and that Verenium has something else besides a flashy web site. Heading Back by Andrew McCaskey We are packing out for the trip back to the Midwest after six weeks more or less camped out at relatives in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Even this rural area has some surprises. Most notable of which was the growth in wideband availabilty over the past six months. While there were generally all sorts of adventures required to find wifi connections - particularly late at night after the coffee shops had shut down and businesses were closed, this trip things have changed. First of all, the local cable company (was Adelphia, now Comcast) finally put in real two way broadband, replacing the overpriced RF down, telco line up that had been offered for years. New hardware and few subscribers mean’t lightning speeds for most of the time here. The most amazing part was Sprint EVDO - which just arrived. Still limited to areas in the proximity of the interstate, it’s still killer when it works. Good family times and good connectivity so that work can continue has been a good combination. Not much of a vacation, but a good change of pace. Plus, two great podcamps (even though expensive trips to Ohio and Boston) to keep in the swing of things, plus the New Media Expo coming up in just a few weeks. Can't see the video? Today on Boing Boing tv, Xeni and Pesco dive deeper into the magical chocolate factory founded by a NASA software developer. In this installment of BBtv's 3-part series on TCHO Chocolate, we learn more about the hacked-together, home-tinkered machines and high-tech wizardry that keep the factory running. The philosophy is "scrappy, not crappy," as founder Timothy Childs explains. TCHO's R&D lab contains such diverse components as Space Shuttle tape, a modded RONCO turkey oven, stone grinders used in Indian restaurants, and deconstructed space heater parts from the local hardware store. Next, we zoom in to the molecular-level science behind this most delicious confection. Science buffs, rejoice! This episode is as fun for your eyes and brain as the "obsessively good" chocolate is for your mouth -- Polymorph fun for the whole family. Warning: this episode is NSFC (not safe for chocoholics). Previously on Boing Boing tv:* TCHO, part 1: chocolate origins. Related: read a feature about TCHO by David Pescovitz in the current issue of MAKE Magazine, Timothy and the Chocolate Factory . Part of the unofficial internal mic mefi challenge. A song about a car accident outside my apartment building and the people that come to watch. I wrote and recorded this track this morning. I feel like mornings are the best time for me to play and record because that's when it is quietest outside. You can still hear the wind blowing outside and a truck backing up if you listen closely.
