BIG BOLD LETTERS, Cruiserweight’s long awaited new album arrives October 7th on Doghouse Records and we couldn’t be happier! One of their new tracks, Balboa, was released recently on Cruiserweight Rocks the Moon along with a cover of American Girl, but will also be on the new BBL full length now available for pre-order at iTunes. We managed to catch up to Cruiserweight in their hometown of Austin, TX in March and it was one of the most frenetic shows of the SXSW festival this year, right up there with Firewater and The English Beat. I snapped the attached picture at The Rio, a small window into their energetic world, although for the full experience I’d recommend catching them on their current tour. It will take them all over the county starting in Dallas this evening, Sept 30th and I really hope this eventually includes California as well … will travel. Minipop: Like I Do

If I’m not mistaken I believe San Francisco indie quartet, Minipop, closed out my South by Southwest 45+ band experience earlier this year in Austin. This picture was taken at Bourbon Rocks during the SFxSXSW party on March 15 around 1:30am in the morning as Minipop put the capper on the big show. Like I Do is the first track on Minipop’s last full length album, A New Hope, which was released late last year on independent, Take Root Records. The song is a lush offering of dream-pop and comes to animated life in the beautiful dreamscape created by director Andrew Huang. The video is half live action (less A-Ha, heavier on Smashing Pumpkins), with a tad of Life of Brian-like animation thrown in (e.g. spaceship scooping up bandmates). Its by far one of the best I’ve seen so far this year. You can pick up A New Hope and this track at itunes or e-music. Patty Hurst Shifter: Life is Mostly Waiting

Bringing us a great blend of American rock ala The Replacements, Raleigh North Carolina based, Patty Hurst Shifter released this song, “Life is Mostly Waiting” on their Fugitive Glue EP in 2007. Its supposedly the first in a series of three EPs that lets the band stay productive and keep releasing songs in small bursts, which will give them some nice breathing room creatively. I was hidden amongst the crowd at the PHS gig in Austin this year at South by Southwest, where they played the Dirty Dog Bar, a venue with more of a raw feel to it. This picture was among a few that I snapped that evening before rushing to the next nearest performing group on my wish list. Good times. You can pick up the Fugitive Glue EP directly from the band at their website. [cs] Download | Subscribe | Subscribe in iTunes | Subscribe to All Spread It Around: Hide Sites Less

Songs for Moms: 1906

From Oakland, CA comes a three piece indie rock group aptly titled Songs for Mom, comprised of Molly / Allana (guitar / bass / vox), and Carey (drums). This last year they finished up a nationwide tour, having the chance to perform with Two Gallants and Blitzen Trapper. I don’t know too much about them currently, although am intrigued by the song references to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire. If you’d like to hear more you can check them out at the site above or at Starcleaner Records. Happy Mothers Day. DOWNLOAD | SUBSCRIBE Spread It Around: Hide Sites Less

The OaKs: Masood

Theres no fear of the sophomore slump for Orlando-based band The OaKs. Instead, they sound more cohesive and vital than ever. “Masood” is the first single from their brand new album “Songs For Waiting.” The OaKs were formed by a pair of bandmates (Ryan Costello and Matthew Antolick) from an earlier project, after Ryan returned from a two-year humanitarian stint in Afghanistan, brimming with ideas for songs. The two put together their debut album, “Our Fathers and the Things They Left Behind” with the help of some friends, then evolved into a full 6-piece ensemble for playing live shows. Deeply concerned with making a difference and continuing to help the refugees in Afghanistan, they donated 50% of all proceeds from that album to Global Hope Network, the organization Ryan had worked with there. With their rich, melodic, unique sound and social consciousness, The OaKs have been garnering national attention and recently were part of the SXSW Music Festival in Austin. Check out our exclusive live video from their headlining showcase at Wave in Austin, TX on the front page of Insomnia Radio for the next several days! Mr. Anonymous - Pantonal (feat. Boubacar Diebate)

This is the first offering after the original drummer for “The Samples” traveled to Jamaica with acoustic guitar and drum machine to record experimental dancehall/hiphop/party music with Jamaica’s premiere musicians including Bounty Killer, Sly & Robbie, Michael Rose (from Black Uhuru), Dave Wakeling (from The English Beat) and many more.. That exceptional album came out about two years ago. Jeep MacNichol (aka Mr. Anonymous) has now paired up with Senegal born griot, Boubacar Diebate on his newest electronic, afro-beat, and pyschedelic meets dancehall flavored track, remixed for a Japanese release. His second album should be dropping very soon, most likely with a wealth of collaborations that have yet to be named, aside from the psychedelic/dub venture with Mega Banton and bandellero styled track with dancehall legend Pinchers. Boubacar, also based in Boulder, recently played a packed house at the Copa in Austin during South by Southwest. I speed walked several blocks over to the show after a rock event at Spiro’s and was treated to something unlike any of the other performances I’d been to during the previous three days of the festival. Bouba plays the Kora, a 21 stringed lute, drums, and sang in his traditional West African style, while musicians jammed alongside. Rumor has it that earlier in the fesival, Bouba had heard a guitarist speaking his native language in town, introduced himself and shortly found himself playing side by side at the showcase, with quite the electric charge in the air and smiles all around. I recently spoke with Jeep and he was extremely excited to get this track out to you all. Like the rest of us here at Insomnia Radio, he was also very saddened by the recent loss of reggae pioneer Mikey Dread, definitely a legend he viewed as one of the all time greats.
