Hold onto your tinfoil hats because the government is seeking to chip away at your online privacy through the use of deep packet inspection. Despite what I’m about to tell you, there are good uses of this technology when it comes to managing and monitoring a network. So don’t shoot the technology, but feel free to take potshots at those trying to use it to suggest that ISPs monitor your surfing habits for illegal images, even those including child pornography. MSNBC has gotten a hold of a proposal made by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to AOL that highlights the use of DPI tools from an Australian company called Brilliant Digital Entertainment. The company is pitching its CopyRouter product (PDF) to help ISPs monitor web traffic, compare it against a list of known child pornography files, and if it makes a match on existing traffic, send the offending subscriber a message warning them that they were about to download child pornography. According to MSNBC, the presentation also says Brilliant Digital could then pass the offender’s IP address over to law enforcement agencies. Wow, that right there would violate the 4th Amendment preventing unreasonable search and seizure, and would put ISPs in the role of web traffic cop — a role none of them relish. Remember in August when the FCC yelled at Comcast for using deep packet inspection to find and block P2P files? During the hearing related to that enforcement order, FCC chairman Kevin Martin compared Comcast’s tactics to opening up a person’s mail and then deciding which letters to send on. Later, Gigi Sohn, head of the Free Press used that same analogy in describing what ISPs were doing when they used deep packet inspection from NebuAD and Phorm to view a user’s web surfing habits. As much as I viscerally loathe the exploitation of children, I have to say that just because some of the country’s online “mail” may contain child pornography, it doesn’t justify the use of such software by private companies to enforce federal laws. Because while today it may be child pornography, and tomorrow, information on explosives, followed by those communicating with terrorists…and pretty soon wrapping your PC in foil starts to look appealing. Logiciel : Apple Aperçu (4+) Niveau : Débutant Pré-requis : Rogner une image avec Aperçu - Annoter, commenter, surligner et souligner un PDF avec Aperçu Durée : 5 min Le PDF (définition complète) est un format intégré au coeur de Mac OS X, et très répandu sur notre plate-forme, mais aussi à travers le Web, pour les avantages qu’il procure, et notamment le fait qu’il ai la même apparence quelque soit le logiciel ou l’OS avec lequel on l’ouvre. C’est Adobe qui a inventé le PDF, et son logiciel Acrobat est la référence en la matière. Si Acrobat Reader est gratuit, il ne permet que de lire les PDF, et, à ce jeu-là, pourquoi s’encombrer, alors qu’Aperçu lit très bien ce format ? Quant à Acrobat Pro, qui permet d’éditer et de créer des PDF il coûte affreusement cher. Heureusement, Aperçu possède quelques fonctions d’édition, qui, si elles ne remplacent pas Acrobat Pro, permettent de dépanner. Un de ces fonctions est la capacité d’Aperçu à gérer des documents PDF de plusieurs pages. Avec Aperçu, rien ne vous empêche d’enlever des pages dans un document PDF, de déplacer des pages, ou même de fusionner plusieurs documents PDF en un seul, ou de copier la page d’un document PDF vers un autre. Il sert d’abord à visionner des images, mais il peut aussi vous aider à faire une planche-contact, détourer une image à fond uni, ou plus complexe, et même à rogner une image. Vous avez sans doute déjà utilisé des documents au format PDF. Le Portable Document Format, abrégé PDF, est un format qui a été créé par Adobe (oui, les mêmes qui ont créé Photoshop), qui a le grand avantage de préserver l’intégrité de son contenu (polices, mise en page, images, et maitenant vidéos) quelque soit la plateforme sur laquelle il est utilisé. En clair, si vous créez un document PDF, il aura la même tête sous Mac OS, sous Windows et sous Linux, que vous utilisiez Acrobat, Aperçu ou tout autre logiciel. L’avantage de Mac OS X est que le PDF est reconnu de manière native par le système, et Aperçu gère très bien ce format, et possède même quelques fonctions avancées que l’on ne retrouve que dans le cher Acrobat Pro. Nous allons voir aujourd’hui comment Aperçu peut vous permettre de travailler sur un PDF en y ajoutant des notes écrites, des notes visuelles (bulles, rectangles), mais aussi en surlignant, soulignant ou barrant du texte, et surtout comment vous pouvez ajouter un lien vers une page Internet, ou vers une autre page du document dans un PDF grâce à Aperçu. Explications, en vidéo, comme à l’habitude (et avec une astuce bonus à la fin ). Vous pouvez donc maintenant ajouter une note à un document avant de le renvoyer à son auteur, par exemple pour correction, ou ajouter des bulles et des rectangles pour faire remarquer des points importants à votre interlocuteur. Et si votre université vous fournit des cours au format PDF, vous pouvez surligner, barrer, ou souligner du texte dans un PDF, comme vous le feriez sur du vrai texte. It will be the document format to beat, basically. I happen to have stumbled across an invitation-only Beta earlier for a new Firefox plugin… to make PDFs. If Firefox were my default browser on Windows, I’d definitely be using this. PDF Download will add an icon to Firefox in Windows. By clicking that icon while on any web page, it will save the page out as a PDF for you. It’s that easy. PDF Download by Nitro PDF Software lets you regain control over PDF files in Firefox. When you click on a PDF file, PDF Download lets you know, can tell you how big it is, and can then give you the choice to open, download, or convert it to HTML. The add-on for Firefox lets you decide what to do with the PDF files you click on and customize and automate how they should be handled. The beauty of the PDF is that if someone creates it, it will retain the same layout no matter what computer or operating system it is opened on. Most manuals you can download from the Internet are in PDF format for just this reason. If you create something in Microsoft Word and try to open it on your Mac… yeah. You know what I’m talking about. The PDF format is just much easier to manage and use. If you know of any other Firefox extensions or PDF tools that you’d like to pass along, let me know!
