It was with great sadness that we learned of [Mark Hoekstra]’s death this morning. Earlier this week, the 34 year old hacker suffered a heart attack while riding his bicycle and was admitted to the hospital in a coma. [Markie] has been a Hack a Day commenter for much of our existence and a project contributor for nearly as long. It started simply with things like his bright green Hack a Day iPod sock and a hand crank iPod charger. He did an excellent job documenting his projects; many people had built IR cameras, but none were nearly as thorough as him. He also enjoyed sharing his love for obsolete hardware with the community. He built a wireless eMate, turned two Mac SE/30’s into audio viualizers, and wired shutter glasses to an old SGI. It was always a treat to hear about [Mark]’s latest project and he’ll be missed greatly. [photo: Bram Belloni]        Less

First we look at Secret Invasion X-Men #1. The guys love the artwork, but think that there were some missed opportunities in the story. Next is Supergirl #32. Justin likes the completion of this recent story arc. Alex thinks this is the best Supergirl has been in her current incarnation. Then we look at Fantastic Four #559. Don't miss the guys riff on a classic Foreigner song "Feels like the First Time". During the Speed Round we check out Army @ Love: The Art of War #1, Nightwing #147, Fathom #1, Patsy Walker: Hellcat #2, and Hawkman Special #1. Then, Justin writes in, "What would you do if The Stack Moved to Another Network?" The guys let us know that we can go to Youtube.com/comicbookclub for some great episodes in the meantime. Justin reminds all The Stack fans to check it out. Be sure to watch The Stack three times a week, and look for our bonus episodes Thursdays! FAP756: Perfect credit scoring storm approaching Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Inside Higher Ed: a day after a top aide to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) expressed skepticism about whether students were being hurt by the credit crunch, the senator set the stage during debate over the 2009 budget resolution on the Senate floor for a proposal that would increase the amount of federal loan funds that a student can borrow — one of several changes that the lenders, for-profit colleges and others most worried about the credit crunch have sought. + More action may be needed, Kennedy said, especially because far too many students are having to turn to more expensive private (or alternative) student loans to cover the difference between what they receive in federal grants and loans and what they must pay to attend college. (Kennedy attributed to the Education Department a figure — far higher than previous estimates from the College Board and other sources — suggesting that 40 to 60 percent of students who take out private loans have not taken “full advantage of the grant aid and low-interest loans they are eligible for under federal programs.” + The financial aid process begins with scholarships + File the FAFSA + Get the maximum amount of federal student loans + Only then take out private student loans + Inside Higher Ed: The Boston Zoning Commission on Wednesday set a limit of four on the number of students who can live together off-campus. The Boston Globe reported that the policy was met with strong support from college officials and neighborhood groups, but with intense opposition from student groups. Supporters said that the measure was needed to minimize the student culture of late-night parties in otherwise quiet residential areas. But many students said that the rules will take away an affordable housing option that they need. Scholarship Update + Spring VON conference + A quick note from personal friend Jeff Pulver that any currently enrolled full time undergraduate or graduate student can attend VON for free, normally a $2,500 ticket + Mail or fax proof of enrollment + Details at our free college scholarships search site News You Can Use + The perfect storm of consumer credit issues + By co-worker Mark Marquis at Student Platinum + Be sure to read tips on how to clean up your credit report Did you enjoy today’s show? FAP750: Private student loan quandary, credit crunch Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Mark Kantrowitz published a large list of lenders who have exited the student loan business, and it’s pretty sobering. + I’ll do my best to keep you posted about changes in the lending industry, but in a sign of how severe this is getting, the Secretary of the Department of Education is asking schools to report any instances of federal student loans being denied to students because the bank has run out of money. + Inside Higher Ed: Starting this fall, any student can get a free MacBook. All he or she has to do is apply, get accepted and decide to attend Oklahoma Christian University. + The cost is mostly built into the tuition price, of course. The university has provided PC-based laptops to its students since 2001, encouraging professors to integrate technology into the classroom and let students learn through online or hybrid course material on their computers. The laptop program has other advantages, too: the university offers software and hardware support on site, complete with loaners for those with computers in the shop. Now, Oklahoma Christian is following a “natural progression,” said John Hermes, the chief technology officer, by switching entirely to Macs.
