Innovating New Winners in Established Markets

Innovating New Winners in Established Markets

Software, innovation, management Brent Frei wrote: I’m attracted to the market opportunity within large, established markets. These markets already have huge spend, they have established dominant players with an inertia resistant to major change, most of the innovative talent and money is off in new market spaces, and innovation within these spaces tends to be evolutionary in nature and follow predictable paths. Identifying a large market that can serve as an appropriate target is often as simple as listening for the drumbeat of consistent comments like: — “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” — “I wish there was a…” — “Why doesn’t somebody invent a…” The revolutionary innovation that occurs in many of these markets is often serendipitous. That means someone isn’t looking to solve the end problem, but something they did is applicable to it. See, for example, Viagra or Post-Its. More often than not, however, the real revolutionary innovation is in line with the evolutionary. Therefore, pick a really big market and do something revolutionary within the natural evolution of the space. So the key question becomes: what is it that successful inventors do to be revolutionarily successful within an evolution? The current modern wonder of revolution within evolution is the Apple iPhone. Apple’s formula for innovation in mature markets is the gold standard. How do they do this? My assessment is that they follow two simple principles: —Design for how people work. —Consolidate and reduce core concepts to a ridiculous minimum; a core concept is anything the customer has to learn or understand in order to successfully use your product. Mobile phones, e-mail on Blackberries and Treos, MP3 music players—all of these existed separately and with ever-expanding feature sets. The race toward consolidation had been going on for some time; but it carried with it the complex, rich feature sets of each independent device. Apple, with its special magic, stuck with the less-is-more approach and let’s make the …Next Page » Comments | Permalink | Share |  E-mail Less

This ECAR research bulletin analyzes how several IT offices, largely at Maryland colleges and universities, are responding to the challenges issued in the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) initiative. Since it is early in developing a response to ACUPCC commitments, the bulletin also examines what these institutions intend to do in the near future. ACUPCC was organized to galvanize the U.S. higher education community to understand and act on issues surrounding climate change and sustainability. In support of this study, the authors interviewed chief information officers at 18 Maryland higher education institutions whose presidents had signed the ACUPCC at the time of the study (twelve public four-year institutions and non-degree granting research centers in the USM, four private four-year institutions, and two community colleges), as well as a representative from the University of Pennsylvania. Citation for this work: Balakrishnan, Suresh, and Donald Z. Spicer. “IT and Campus Climate Change” (Research Bulletin, Issue 20). With Microsoft in Sight, Cisco Buys Jabber

Cisco said this morning it would buy instant messaging service Jabber for an undisclosed amount. The deal is another move by the networking company into the collaboration space — this time highlighting the importance of presence awareness and interoperability in collaboration. It follows nicely with Cisco’s buy of PostPath earlier this month, as well as its WebEx acquisition. Cisco CEO John Chambers has been pretty vocal in its desire to go after three hot markets: collaboration, virtualization and video. From Cisco’s press release: “Enterprise organizations want an extensible presence and messaging platform that can integrate with business process applications and easily adapt to their changing needs,” said Doug Dennerline, Cisco senior vice president, Collaboration Software Group. “With the acquisition of Jabber, we will be able to extend the reach of our current instant messaging service and expand the capabilities of our collaboration platform. Our intention is to be the interoperability benchmark in the collaboration space.” Jabber is based on Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), the same protocol being used by several open-source IM implementations. Services like Twitter use XMPP. Jabber also operates with Google Talk, and with the AIM Gateway from Jabber, it can be used to communicate with AOL users. Jabber also communicates with users of Microsoft Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. Yesterday at GigaOM’s Mobilize event, Cisco CTO Padmasree Warrior told the audience that the company believes collaboration to be a $34 billion business, and emphasized the move away from selling only networking gear. Services are a crucial part of the that strategy and a robust presence platform is one of the essential services in offering real-time collaboration that Warrior highlighted in her keynote. And for those keeping score in Microsoft/Cisco showdown, Jabber (which Om has called the platform of choice for voice-over-IM) is way more compelling that what I’ve seen demonstrated in Microsoft’s unified communcations efforts through SharePoint. Cisco Betting Big on Buzzwords for Growth

Cisco Betting Big on Buzzwords for Growth

Had I not been mired in preparing for our Mobilize 08 conference, w... More

Had I not been mired in preparing for our Mobilize 08 conference, which kicks off tomorrow, I would surely have attended Cisco’s analyst day, if only to find out how the company with some $40 billion in annual sales plans to keep growing in the face of a tighter global economy. What would have become immediately clear to me is that the company is betting on three buzzwords — video, collaboration and virtualization — to spur annual growth of between 12 and 17 percent over the next few years. We have written extensively about Cisco’s various moves into collaboration, in particular its pesky fight with Google and Microsoft, as well as its commitment to data centers. While it’s still too early to tell how it will all shake out, our industry sources say that the Cisco sales machines has started to march in this direction. Not that the company has a choice. Cisco’s core markets of switching and routing (54 percent) are maturing and may grow just 8-9 percent over time, so the company needs to find new growth opportunities — fast. Success, however, is far from guaranteed, especially in the light of competition from certain players that have traditionally been seen as friends. Numerous analysts that were at Cisco’s analyst day emailed me their research notes. Here are some highlights from RBC Capital Markets, UBS and Lazard Capital Markets: Video, collaboration and virtualization were key areas of focus and may collectively represent $62 billion in additional addressable markets. Cisco’s core markets of switching and routing (54 percent of their revenue) are hitting middle age and may grow just 8-9 percent over time. Cisco expects 8 percent year-over-year growth. U.S. financial sector only accounts for 3-4 percent of Cisco’s total sales, so its woes won’t have much of an impact, the company says. UBS analysts agree with my prognosis that, along with slugging it out with Microsoft, Cisco is going to butt heads with server makers like HP and IBM. Lazard Capital Markets said what we reported back in March, that sooner or later, Cisco is going to make blade servers. As analyst Ryan Hutchinson wrote: “Are blade servers the next move? Our industry contacts suggest Cisco will enter the blade server market over the next several months. While we have yet to collect all the details, we believe this is an aggressive move toward increasing its control over the next-generation data center.” What do analysts think about Cisco? Mark Sue, RBC Capital Markets: “[D]espite the muted environment, Cisco may be executing better than its peers…we view Cisco as a strong relative defensive name.” Ryan Hutchinson, Lazard Capital Markets: “Chambers’ tone continues to be bullish despite the continued macro situation, expressing confidence in Cisco’s ability to grow and take share during market transitions.” UBS analysts: “We believe given the slowdown in organic growth & an increasing chance of acquisitions, Cisco’s multiple will likely remain in the mid to low end of its 15-20x historical PE range.” Photo courtesy of Cisco Systems. 900 million PCs or 300 billion mobile handsets. Which is the bigger opportunity? Mobilize 08: GigaOM’s Next-Generation Mobile Conference Less

Wiggio Offers Free Groupware for Harried College Students

startups, Web, Software Wade Roush wrote: When I was in college in ... More

startups, Web, Software Wade Roush wrote: When I was in college in the late 1980s, the apex of communications technology was the answering machine. Nobody had a mobile phone. Nobody even had an e-mail account, aside from a few computer-science majors. (And since there was no data connectivity in the dorms, even the geeks had to go to the computer room in the campus science center to read their e-mail.) If you wanted to contact a fellow student to set up a lunch date or a study group meeting or a band rehearsal, you had to call their dorm room and leave a message. And if you wanted a friend to edit your term paper, you had to hand it to them on a floppy disk. So when Dana Lampert and Lance Polivy, two 22-year-old Cornell graduates, came by Xconomy’s office last week to talk about their Cambridge, MA-based startup, a student-oriented groupware provider called Wiggio, I listened with growing bemusement. It seems that kids these days are on the go so much of the time, and have so many clubs and groups and friends to keep up with, that they want help from the same kind of scheduling and collaboration software used inside many Fortune-1000 companies today. “Dana and I both had summer internships on Wall Street, working for big banks, and we realized that there are all these great collaboration tools, but we didn’t have any of them back at school,” says Polivy. Nor could students afford these tools, even if they were available on campus. Microsoft’s Groove, a desktop program that teams can use to create online workspaces, costs $229 per copy—and even no-frills, Web-based alternatives like Basecamp, a popular collaboration suite from Chicago’s 37signals, can come with steep monthly fees ($24 to $149 per month, in Basecamp’s case). So Lampert and Polivy and their software-engineering colleagues, brothers Rob and Derek Doyle, built a system that lets students share files and calendars, set up group conference calls, and exchange mass text messages, voice messages, and e-mails—all from a free, advertising-supported Web interface. Students at Cornell and other campuses have been testing Wiggio since last spring, and the startup will open the site to the general public on Monday. Lampert and Polivy say they plan to start marketing the system this fall on 40 select campuses around the country, including Boston schools like BU, Harvard, Northeastern, and Tufts. The pair of young entrepreneurs say that Wiggio—the name is a takeoff on an acronym for “Working In Groups”—was born from their own frustrations at Cornell, keeping their busy student lives in order. “We were in many different business organizations, bands, sports teams, fraternity councils, and living in apartments with different housemates, and we found that each group was using different tools,” says Lampert. “Some were using Google Calendar, others were using Yahoo’s calendars. Some just sent e-mails out, others used listservs. For polls, they’d go to Survey Monkey, and for conference calls they’d use free apps like FreeConference.com. When Lance and I put our heads together, we thought we could put all these things in one place.” Almost every function on Wiggio duplicates something that’s also available from some other service or platform. But the key to building Wiggio, Lampert says, was making things simple. Setting up a group is quick, easy, and free, and groups can use as many or as few of the communications options as they need. Each task, from creating an event on the Wiggio calendar to sending out a mass text message, is boiled down to …Next Page » Comments | Permalink | Share |  E-mail Less

While we're building great new tools to build communities, we've done very little to ensure that people around the world have access to them. And even when we've made it possible for people in developing nations to speak, we've done little to ensure that anyone listens. How do we ensure that the "Second Superpower" Jim Moore proposes includes the poor as well as the rich? When a new democratic structure emerges from highly-wired westerners, how do we ensure it's fair and just for those currently unwired? Less

Cortex has given me a taste of MuFi collaboration, and I like it. This is a simply acoustic country gospel ballad about sin and possible redemption. Anyone is welcome to download it and contribute. In my ears, it needs some organ and some close harmony, but whatever anybody wants to do to it, if they want to do anything, is welcome. Here are the lyrics: There's a glorious mansion on the hill, on the hill There's a glorious mansion on the hill There's a promise that I made once I keep it still, I keep it still There's a glorious mansion on the hill There's some sinning that I done once I sinned my fill, I sinned my fill There's a glorious mansion on the hill There's a good I must find in me I will fulfill I will fulfill There's a glorious mansion on the hill I swore to give up roving And so I will, and so I will There's a glorious mansion on the hill I'll turn from rowdy ways Right up until, right up until I reach that glorious mansion on the hill Less
