Aspire One 3G hack

[tnkgrl] is back with part three of her Acer Aspire One hacking. This time she’s adding in 3G. You may look at the picture the above and think, “Cake. She just plugged the card in”. No, the Acer doesn’t ship with the mini-PCIe slot or the SIM card holder. First you have to solder a right angle mini-PCIe connector to the board pads and bridge two others to provide power. The SIM holder was another problem. She wasn’t able to find a pin compatible one. The one she installed is mounted to a riser so she could change the wiring order (let her know if you can find the correct part). This mod definitely requires some good soldering skills and she warns that even she managed to destroy a SIM in the process. The Dell Mini 9 is another netbook that doesn’t have the appropriate connectors soldered on board, but JKK has a work-around. You need a 3G modem that has the SIM card on board. You plug it into the WiFi slot after taping over a few pins and then use a USB WiFi card instead. Less

Are all iPhone Problems Apple’s Fault - or AT&T’s?
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed My wife l... More
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed My wife loves to remind me of the day that the iPhone was released. I had come up with a list of reasons why I would not get an iPhone. Thankfully, I have one now. I admit it… I’m an addict. It has its shortcomings, yes. But I still absolutely love it. I wanted to share this top five list with all of you that was sent in my Lamb0. It’s different from any iPhone top five I’ve done before. He feels that Apple isn’t the only one to blame for the shortcomings of the iPhone… he places much blame on AT&T, as well. MMS - Almost every Verizon customer can send short video and picture messages. MMS would be an easy thing to implement as an App. Tethering - Blackberry’s can do it. But, AT&T wants you to pick up a $60 addition to your bill. They want a portion of the tether, too. NetShare was an App out for a few days. It was taken down because AT&T doesn’t want it on the phone. Banned Apps - Podcaster was banned recently. It downloaded a Podcast to the iPhone without having to be tied to WiFi. Podcasts are data-intensive, and AT&T doesn’t want that much going through their network. Video - Why can’t I just record videos and save them on the phone? Emailing them would increase data use, again. More Data - With every news article I read, it’s based on Apps that deal with data. The trend I notice is that with each App, it uses high amounts of data. People may feel they have an unlimited data package from AT&T. However, it’s not the same. More data could be pushed through if more data-intensive Apps were allowed. He feels that Apple has treated him very well, and makes him happy. He’s not happy with AT&T at all. He feels that they do nothing but attempt to hold their customers back, and not give them the freedom to choose and use what they want. Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum? T-Mobile’s 3G Network Comes Alive in San Francisco
Three full weeks before T-Mobile’s Google-powered G1 handset ... More
Three full weeks before T-Mobile’s Google-powered G1 handset is due to arrive, the wireless carrier has lit up its high-speed wireless spectrum in San Francisco. The UMTS/HSDPA service is usable on handsets that currently support the 1.7 GHz frequency like the upcoming G1 and the currently available Sony Ericsson TM506, allowing their owners to take advantage of a network not yet oversaturated by data-hungry devices. San Francisco was on a short list of cities slated to receive the faster network by mid-October. Over the next few weeks, it’s due to be followed by Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, Seattle and California’s state capital of Sacramento. Since the recently launched Google Android handset heavily leverages a high-speed data connection and Google has such a looming presence in the area, it’s fitting that T-Mobile light up the network there sooner rather than later. T-Mobile will need to sell quite a few devices capable of using the network to see a solid return on their investment. Or rather, they’ll need customer commitments to long-term data plans that build a revenue stream, as the 3G investment in San Francisco alone cost over $322 million to implement. The G1 handset can actually help sell the network, but much will depend on whether or not developers embrace the platform and deliver a wide array of applications for the network-centric device. Less

Thumbnail Views: Via Thumblicio.us SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Early Notes on New Media Expo by Andrew McCaskey First a practical comment: McCarren does it right as far as WiFi is concerned. As I Tweeted earlier today, there was more than ample bandwidth to watch some Seesmic and get some of the show prep done before leaving Las Vegas. The critical resource became primary power - as it always is. Even though the MacBook normally has plenty of battery capacity, it’s always worthwhile ‘topping off before boarding the plane. Live would probably be simpler if I carried an extra charged battery - but it seems that the extra weight does not quite outweigh (so to speak) the benefits. ======= Here are some initial thoughts on the New Media Expo. Keynotes: A Sessions: C minus, with a few A and B level sessions. Hotel and convenience: B Connections and Hallway Interactions: B One gripe - the fact that the unit of exchange in Las Vegas is now the $20 bill.Cab to anywhere busts a twenty - maybe with a few bucks left over for change and regular tips. And that is a change since January. Meals, even in the modest restaurants busts another twenty. With a little better planning, I could have done some of the social activity using the Monorail. I would characterize this as the stretch year, reflecting the personal growth and business maturity that almost everyone in the podcast space is making. The bulk of the sessions ( with the exception of the excellent class on advanced audio editing) were pretty mediocre. In fact, after giving the presenter ten or fifteen minutes to show some value and get things moving, I walked out and spent time far more productively on the show floor and in hallway conversations. Year 1- 2005 was the year of the technology enthusiast. Most of us caught up in the thrill of the initial explosion in late 2004 traveled to Ontario full of enthusiasm, curiosity and voracious desire to learn from each other. Audible.com set the tone with hacker black T-shirts proudly proclaiming “I’m Recording This” and many were doing exactly that. Year 2 - 2006 was all about how to monetize - and the emergence of various business models and the tension between those who were pursuing podcasting as a hobby and those with business intent. Year 3 - 2007 - was the year of video and business model consolidation. A number of companies had come and gone, as well as business models and strategies. More of a corporate IF there was ever an industry on internet time, it has to be podcasting. In less than three years it has moved from a tech enthusiast niche of audio content through various trial and error business models to the aspirational term and point of view captured in the term “New Media”. This year’s New Media Expo (which I still want to call PME for Podcast Media Expo - even though that was never the real name) was the stretch year. I found the sessions to be irregular - a mix of the first three years content wise, but not connecting and only a poor subset of previous Expos. What did I like ? I thought each of the keynotes were interesting ,challenging and innovative. I enjoyed the technical depth of the advanced audio editing and video format sessions. I was challenged in the Infomercial session, and inspired by the Screencast story. We rattled around a whole lot in Las Vegas Convention Center. But, on the whole it was a worthwhile trip. I just hope that I can stretch in the right directions in new media. In a bid to break out of the regional facilities in Ontario, CA, the show is in the Las Vegas Convention Center. We had an outstanding keynote speaker to open - Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. @garyvee . and that went a long, long way towards reversing the initial bad vibes of a relatively small convention rattling around in a few rooms in the North Hall of the LVCC. Of course, the standard of comparison is the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), two of the largest shows that Las Vegas hosts each year. The exhibitor quality is high, and the personal hallway meetups have been very , very encouraging. More on the conference next week.
