Oy Mendele! invites you to leave us a message; we'll be incorporating these voicemail messages into future programs. The phone number is 1-510-962-5265. This is a regular US call. We're currently requesting comment on the following: The Gaza Withdrawal: Is this truly a momentous event, or merely a tactical footnote in the tortured history of the region? Is the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza likely to bring the peoples of Israel and Palestine any closer to reconciliation? NPR's Mideast Coverage: The new chair of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Cheryl Halpern, is a Jewish Republican fundraiser who's declared that NPR's coverage is slanted against Israel. Do you think NPR's coverage is biased against Israel? Why/Why not? If you'd rather not pontificate on either of those subjects, we'd love to have commentary on the show, let us know your thought about past programming and what we can do to make Oy Mendele! better in the future.

Finally. This episode features: The funky (really!) Jewish hip-hop beats of Socalled: interview + music with Socalled and a tour through the work of some of his favorite Jewish musicians, including Aaron Lebedeff, Irving Fields, and Mickey Katz . Zac Jaffee reviews Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, the new record by Cracow Klezmer Band that pays tribute to Bruno Schulz. Benjamin Paloff on the transcendent art, tragic life, and unsettled legacy of Bruno Schulz. Enjoy! This episode is fortified with 20 extra minutes of content. I guess we can call it our 'feature length' show.

For our early Av episode we bring to you: Hitler's Jewish Psychic: Erik Jan Hanussen was a Jewish carny-slash-psychic-slash-tabloid-publisher. He was also instrumental in getting Hitler into the Reichstag. Dr. Mel Gordon, who wrote the book on Hanussen, tells us all about it. Andy Statman's new record, Avodas Halevi , reviewed by Zac Jaffee. Dawn 2005 : Rabbi Sydney Mintz of Congregation Emanuel in San Francisco explains why she celebrated Shavuot in a club at 6th and Mission in SF. Invisible Cities : Tim Barsky of The Bright River has a new show and some new collaborators, preview it here. Music, Music, Music: from Daniel Zamir, The Jewish Art Quartet, Moyshe Oysher, Gary Lucas, Pharaoh's Daughter (doing a melody of Eicha, for Tisha B'Av), and, of course, Andy Statman. So much stuff on this show, it's practically a Judeo-ADD celebration. Several minutes guaranteed listenable! Big thanks to Michelle Davis, Zac Jaffee, Rekebah Kouy-Ghadosh, and all our guests!

Galeet not only told us about the band and Mizrachi-Sephardic music that Divahn performs and her musical family (her Grandfather was a major performer of Persian classical music in Iran, and her father was a teen idol there, with his own TV show), but she also sang Mizmor L'David (Psalm 23) and Ayni Tz'ofiah. You can also hear 4 selections from Divahn's CD; Yah Ribon Alam, Shabekhi Yerushalayim, Shekharkhoret, and Yigdal. This our first podcast-only release! Yay! <itunes:summary>Here's an interview with Galeet Dardashti the founder and lead vocalist of Divahn. I caught up with Galeet in Berkeley, where she's busy rehearsing for her show (with Amy Tobin) tomorrow night (see previous post for details). Yay! Let us know what you think...</itunes:summary>

This episode features labor activist, musician and historian Henry Foner singing labor songs and discussing the history and present of the labor movement. In the wake of the Conservative movement's inability to decide whether or not to ordain gay rabbis, UC Berkeley professor Dr. Daniel Boyarin helps us understand the idea of homosexuality in the context of Jewish thought. Shabot6000 creator Ben Baruch discusses how and why he draws a comic strip about an Orthodox man who builds a robot to do work for him on shabbat, only to have his techno-shabbat-goy aspirations frustrated by said robot's conversion to Judaism. Dalal has released 9 albums, and has played around the world, notably at the Nobel Peace Prize gala in 1994, and at the 2004 WOMAD festival. Dalal's music encompasses all of the musics of the Middle East and highlights the interconnectedness of Arab and Jewish music and culture. This segment contains 3 songs by Dalal, one by Iraqi/Israeli singer Filfel Georgy, and discussion of the music, culture and politics of Israel and the Middle East, with an emphasis on the history of mizrachi Jews in Israel.

Their album 'Homesick Blues' is all about being nostalgic for places you've never been, and it's some of the funnest, loudest, sometimes sloppiest newish Klezmer I've heard in a while. I spoke with Annette Ezekiel, Golem's co-lead-singer/accordionist. You can also download Abby Levine, Amy Tobin, and Golem as individual segments.</itunes:subtitle>
