The Vikings knock glasses enjoying the delicious Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, put out by the illustrious George Stranahan made with the left over mash from the Flying Dog breweries. Jason's on the wagon and he's finally been sober long enough to realize he's probably autistic. Benjamin Franklin would have loved these crazy good grilled cheese that Alex made with bacon, avocado and three kinds of cheese. But if a Sarlacc Pit ate one of these grilled cheeses where then would it shit? PETA is about to win the water head award for excellence in douchebaggery. Serious, all you mealy-mouthed wankatarians lighten the fuck up.

Tonight we start the show raising a glass to a fallen friend, a listener and a forum member. Knowon_yuno took his life not long ago and we remember him, dedicating the show to him and wishing his friends and family the best as they work to restore their lives after this terrible tragedy. An important question: If god was a pie, which kind would you prefer to have thrown in your face when you got to heaven? We take this very seriously. Also we discuss Illinois' cocksucker Governor, his shady dealings, and the statewide political nervous breakdown being handled on the national stage. Hot damn. Viking Jason has an nutballs conspiracy theory concerning the timing of Blago's indictments and president-elect Obama. Lastly, we chat about the darker corners of the chicago Readers personal ads namely one Pussy Bottom Boy. Oh yeah, Chertoff is a dickhead.

Back From Iraq

Come with the Vikings this week as we spend the evening talking to our buddy Adam who is a medic for the armed services having just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. About 6 years ago our Adam disappeared into an intelligence black hole first being taught Arabic, but then moving into medical training. None of his friends had any contact with him and there was no idea for anyone to know if he was alive or dead. Fortunately, in this situation there is a happy ending; Adam has recently returned from Afghanistan and is healthy, happy, and thrilled to be back amongst his friends. We hope you enjoy this unique opportunity to get a first hand and honest view from a solid Viking compadre who had the odd opportunity to witness and live the ill-formed strain of the present and waning administration's attempts at foreign diplomacy. This is the first part of a two part show.

It's part deux of our fawning in the halls of democracy. We get some useful bathroom etiquette from Winston Churchill before going over the new marijuana legislation passed in Massachusettes and the implications for the future of drug laws. We also talk about Obama's potential cabinet and our hopes and fears for the new Obama Administration. I promise after this show we won't talk about politics for a while. May the wings of freedom never lose a feather!

Did you hear that Obama won the election? No shit! This week we reflect on the many wonderful things about having a president elect who actually reads books and what a literate, erudite, charismatic and principled man in our country's highest office might mean for a world on the edge of disaster. We look back on our experience at Grant Park hearing Obama's acceptance speech live in the greatest city in the greatest country in the world. Heyo! We also get lost in some prognostications about democracy 2.0 and economic policy.

Glenn, Viking Alex's gay, younger sibling joins us for National Coming Out Week and to celebrate this fabulous occasion we set up an experiment to discover what is truly the finest Hot Dog of them all. Basically the experiment followed as such: we took 5 dogs - Vienna Beef, Nathan's, Hebrew National, Best, and one other kind I can't remember - prepared them in boiling water and then ate them with yellow mustard, without knowing the brand. We then rated them, rather poorly, best to worst, 1-5. Some of the results may surprise you, most probably won't. We may repeat this experiment again in the future with different cooking techniques and also with different types of sausages as well. But take heed, fat listeners, after this show, you will have unarguable evidence as to the superiority of certain dogs over others. You go Glenn!

Hey, all 4 Vikings are back together for the first time this summer! And boy is it disappointing. We attempt a discussion on Bill "Fucking" Dance and fishing that falls flatter than my fourth grade girl friend as it devolves into deep analysis of Jason's issues with VD, poverty, and fisting. Want to get under Alex's skin? Ease him into a gentle discussion of the TRUTH behind the Lunar Hoax. Lastly, we blow the lid off of the coming Cold War!

Take a moment to breathe deep, rub your prostate, and give yourself the gift of listening to the Vikings enjoying the fine Canadian Whiskey, TangleRidge, on the rocks. This fantastic gift was sent to us from a faithful Canadian listener. And hey, let's be honest, this kid had a great idea! Why don't YOU send US some awesome shit we could enjoy on air? We'll even talk about it and maybe we'll even send you something in return. Maybe. But seriously folks, send us shit, we appreciate your gifts so much you'll feel better because of it! We also talk about some Korean dump that Thom and Mat went to (b-o-r-i-n-g) while struggling unsuccessfully to make a derogatory joke about Soju. To properly thank our wonderful Canadian friend, Alex breaks down the real issue with Canadians; the uncanny valley. Mat discusses the Stevie Nicks vacuum his mind slipped into last week.
Sit back, pour yourself a glass of milk and help the Vikings celebrate the recording of show #478. After 16 years in the business, it seems like the Vikings might finally be getting it right. We fawn over John Carpenter's ouevre and lament Mr. Rowdy Roddy Piper's short but powerful tenure in Hollywood. Also we celebrate perhaps American Cinema's greatest contribution "Repo Man" and we get down to the horn's tip on that grand phenomenon of the 1960's, The Monkee's. Also: * Indie rockers have no balls * Home enema disasters! * Sea creatures are delicious and very large * LSD + Detroit = ILL PLAN/EVIL MIDGETS

This week we have our friend Charles on the show to talk about the CERN Large Hadron Collider project that he is involved in. The LHC has brought together the best minds working in particle physics today to perform a multitude of tests that have been 30+ years in the making that will help humanity reshape it's very understanding of some of the most mysterious and rudimentary aspects of the universe. Compared to the Apollo space missions in scale of importance, the LHC may usher in an entirely new means of comprehending the universe we exist within... or it may be the last large scale experiment of it's kind. Come on in and get well over your heads along with the Vikings. Fortunately, we've got a competent guide as we make this journey to the center of pretty much everything (maybe).

David Best and the Detroit Dream

Over the past few years key members of Detroit's Burning Man community have worked in conjunction with BRAF, Detroit Blight Busters, and artist David Best to create the Detroit Dream Project. Not without it's obstacles, the Detroit Dream Project finally came to fruit in a ten day period between June 10th to 20th, 2008. The Vikings ventured out to Detroit to help a bit with the Temple build and to interview temple artist David Best. We discussed the Detroit Dream Project, his Burning Man Temple's, David's work prior to Burning Man, work he's planning for the future and much, much more. David is one of the most enjoyable people I've had the opportunity to spend time with, somehow managing to fit a 600lb heart in a 5'6" frame. He is that unique kind of person who inspires not so much by his work - which is astounding - but by his enthusiasm for his work, for life and the confusion of life, and for the people who work with him coalescing nothing short of the very material of Dreams.

This week we have the unique pleasure of talking to science fiction author, blogger extraordinaire, and digital freedom fighter Cory Doctorow about his new "young adult" novel, "Little Brother". "Little Brother" follows a group of young San Francisco hackers who organize and fight back against the rogue forces of the DHS to rescue the Bill of Rights. "Little Brother" is more than a gripping story of young kids learning to be free, it's a primer on security technologies, a lesson on counter culture history, and a road map to inform tomorrow's best minds on how to stand firm and fight for cognitive and civil liberties. Cory will be discussing "Little Brother" tomorrow night at Barnes and Noble on Webster and Clybourn tomorrow night at 7:30, please come out and support him.

I first got turned on to Cob houses by the great site, I Love Cob a year or so ago. I then told Matty about it and he ran with it, falling in love with the art and science of natural building. So you could imagine our surprise when we discovered a good friend of ours, Anna Wolfson, is a talented natural builder right here in Chicago. Anna was brave enough to put up with an hour or two of our bullshit in order to drop some serious science about the many virtues of natural building. Learn about how and why Anna got involved in natural building and how she is using her skills to transform her life and the live's of others around her. And most importantly learn some great ways of how you can begin to build your home "not for who you are, but for who you want to be."

Last week the Vikings had the unique pleasure of seeing the one and only Hockey Puck, Don Rickles, live at the Potawotami Bingo Casino in Milwaukee. Cozy up to your squawk box while we fawn over the Merchant of Venom. And, not only did the old Sultan of Insults bowl us over, but his opening act, Gene Ferrari, grew us some fresh dendrites and delivered them with class. We also discuss some sex ed follies and learn some surprising information about Matty's 8th Grade basketball coach. Lastly, we blow the lid off the the FBI sting on the Viking Youth.

This week's show comes to you with only 2 men standing, Viking Alex and Viking Mat. Viking Brian was on assignment in the Himalayas, while Viking Jason and Thomas Shade were in the Dells celebrating their 3 year anniversary. In remembrance of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Alex and Mat discuss the ways they came to know the good doctor and how they celebrate the man every year. They also discuss the speech Bobby Kennedy gave on the day of MLK's assassination. Lastly, Matty finally drops the facade and confesses to how he is actually a Bush man trapped in a woman's body. It's a mediocre show this week made especially with you in mind. Proceed....

Dipping back into our Playa archives we found another few segments with author, culture critic, and volunteer hi-li champion Erik Davis. In this episode Erik talks extensively about his research into Scientology for his wonderful book "The Visionary State" discussing techniques, history, it's relevance through the 60's, as well as the weird Scientology video you may see as a potential recruit. Never satisfied to talk about only one wacky cult we ease our whiskey-stained selves into chatting about the corporatization of Burning Man and the occult aspects of corporations. In a perfect world Erik Davis would rule the world by joystick from a wood-paneled bunker in the suburbs of southern California.

In this episode we take a lithmus test of one travelers journey along the spirit parade. For this experiment we tapped the only person we could reasonably consider for something like this, the Vikings maddest listener, Jade! We follow him from wide-eyed book hungry kid, through his LSD use, to his stay at the Blue Cloud Alley, to being a facilitator at an Ibogaine facility in southern Florida, and to, most recently, investigating the teachings of Wayne Liquorman. Jade is a rare natural resource and this show is as fun to listen to as it was to record. Enjoy it!

We wish the Smurf's a happy birthday and Jason tosses a bit of Neitsche on our nonesense to make it sound like we know a thing or two.

To celebrate this 3rd birthday of the Viking Youth Power Hour we talk about those coo-coo ca-ca neigh-neigh minded woo-woos who call themselves Scientologists and all their whu-whu? branded foo-foo nonsense. We cover all the hits, Tom Cruise's baffling video, "Wacky Jack" Parsons, Soul-Cracking, the bearding conspiracies, the new books, "ANONYMOUS"... as well as discussing our previously failed attempts to do a show on Scientology and the suspicious Moon Child rites of it's highest ranking members. Plus, we leave a bit of time to make fun of Aleister Crowley. And what about Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan? I ain't 'fraid of no ghost!

At some point I think we actually talk about politics and the Iowa Caucus' but I'm sick of listening to this crap so you'll just have to write your own show notes for that part.

here we are. get off our back. write a letter to NPR if you have a problem. but HEY thanks for sticking around and waiting for our drunk asses. what can we say, it's hard to live in this world, it's harder to do a thing, to live a life, and then in that life do shit all the time when people expect it. but we back! we BACK! WE BACK! learn about diplomacy, what makes a president worth his weight in toast, and the meaning of a sunrise. learn what makes the world of spam go round, and find out just how long Burning Man can keep it's glittery pants giving in the face of scarcity. Most importantly: find the finest way to cook yourself a hippie.

Shane and Amy Bugbee, the Johnny Appleseeds of Podcasting, joined us for an evening to talk about their fascinating upcoming project... A Year At the Wheel. Stopping in 20 cities for 10 days a piece, Shane and Amy will be taking a barometer check on what real Americans think about the state of our strange nation. In addition to this they'll be distributing old computer gear and teaching interested folks how to make their own podcasts. So why is podcasting's favorite transgender maven of information Adam Curry reneging on his support in the 11th hour? Maybe it's because of the Ely episode? Or Shane's tasteful venture into the Satanic Porn industry? Most likely though, it's Amy's strange obsession with the works of Dark Arts Master Jean Shephard. If you live in Chicago please come out to support Shane and Amy's project when they kick it off at the Empty Bottle on November 4th!!

The Vikings discuss the present clusterfuck in Iraq with the war criminals being paid and protected by the people of the U.S., Black Water. We then get into the internet phenomenon of the days of yore, John Titor, the time travellor who returned from the future to find an old IBM computer and warn us about our upcoming civil war and nucleur holocaust. And odd spam from a time traveller most likely just trying to find Paul Laffoley. Finally, the Vikings discuss where, if they had a time machine, they would go and what happens when the sexual revolution goes to Wisconsin.

Here's the first show we recorded on the playa this year. It's the morning after the man burnt and we've got Charles Shaw (at the time he was the editor-in-chief of Conscious Choice, now low these 2 weeks later he is the editor-in-chief of Reality Sandwich) who worked with the media team during the very serious press conference about the assassination of the Man. We discuss this very serious matter without laughing. We discuss our favorite art pieces from this year and the phenomenon of "bike cocking" before belly-flopping into a fairly disjointed conversation on economics. Lastly, Striz relates a story about the harrowing second venture of the Ragnarok.

In our first show recorded live at this year's Burning Man festival esteemed journalist of the tasteful Erik Davis returns to offer his annual report from the trenches. We find out what Erik has been up to low these many days since our last adventures: writing for Reality Sandwhich, helping to co-ordinate the "Hair" of the burning world the "Burning Roadshow", and slogging around Burma with "lady boys", the transvestite-shaman who act as emissaries for the Nat Pwe in an annual whiskey fueled south-eastern voodoo-like festival. We also discuss the "Burnt Man", this years most cathartic and novel aspect of the Burn, when a failed method-actor shimmied up our craven god and created the most effective artificial crisis anyone has seen in years. We hear the rumors, we discuss the implications, we ignore the blow hard who actually did it (it was Batman, sssh...). And lastly, we discuss the devil's play things themselves, the dark lord's proto-cock-rock heathen's themselves...Led Zeppelin!...

The Vikings Interview Paul Laffoley at EsoZone

After our set at the EsoZone conference we spent some time chatting with visionary artist, Paul Laffoley. After chatting for a while we were taken by the notion to do an impromptu interview with Paul for the attendees of the conference. What you will hear is the audio recording of most of that interview as captured by the good folks at Phase II. It's short and not the greatest quality but it documents one of the high points in our lives to be sure. Paul talks about what makes his paintings more than fine art, where his iconography and imagery originate from, and his natal chart among other things. Enjoy! The Vikings have left for Burning Man. I'm going to make a hollow promise that I will upload shows while we are on the playa, but take that promise with the grain of playa dust it is offered with. If you're coming to Black Rock City please stop by Radio Free Valhalla and say 'Hi!'

Made most famous by the work of Susan Blackmoore, the meme is an effective model for understanding how information is designed and how it travels and propogates itself amongst it's hosts. The Vikings also spend some time discussing the work of prog rock God, Steve Hillage and the need to sometimes head back to your roots and roll around in the past for just a little bit.

This week the Vikings investigate the strange "aerial drones" that have been reported appearing over the state of california. These strange little bastards not only look believable and have a solid, convincing tale spun to support their existence and some of the clearest photos ever taken of an alleged U.F.O., but have stirred the collective internet pot with tomes of speculation as to it's existence and, should it be a hoax, how they might be made. regardless of it's presumed truthiness this is a truly fascinating story to be told. combining sigilization, Paul Laffoley-styled post-physics, and a hell of a collection of documents to support the fascinating claims, if this is a hoax it's the best hoax ever created, if it's not isn't it odd that our initial response to this and any aspect of the numinous these days is to presume it must be part of some cynical marketing campaign. what does that say about our species?

This week the Vikings record their show while enjoying a wonderful meal at Cafe Gulistan. Cafe Gulistan is a mediterranean restaurant in Michigan owned by Ibrahim Parlak. Ibrahim is as kind, intelligent, humble and funny as a person could be. He's a succesful restauranteur, a husband and father, the kind of guy you want in your life, as your neighbor, and your friend. Ibrahim is a model immigrant and, more than that, a model human being who loves his Freedom and loves what the United States is meant to be. Ibrahim is also the subject of continued harrasment, imprisonment, and the blatantly illegal and slanderous attacks of the Department of Homeland Security and INS. But where other immigrants struggles with a rogue government go silenced and unheard, Ibrahim was fortunate, he had a community; a town full of people who know him, love him, and will stop at nothing to assure his Freedom, which he has fought so hard to attain, remains intact. And while his friends, family, and Congress...

And while his friends, family, and Congressmen work tirelessly to help him our government has put equal amounts of energy into disrupting this gentle man's life, going so far as to kidnap his brother in a last ditch effort to express their flaccid control. We are proud to know Ibrahim Parlak and honored that we are able to participate in his pusuit of life, according to his own design, in a country designed to insure that right.</itunes:subtitle>

Long time friend of the show Michael Moore has sent a screener of his new film, "Sicko", for review and asked us to let him know what we think. And friends we're here to say that this film really could blow the doors open on the clusterfuck that is America's Health Care system. This is Michael Moore at his best. Infuriating, heartbreaking, funny, and disturbing. If this film doesn't elevate the dialogue to the volume of demand nothing will. This is yet another brick in the window of the unraveling myth of the New Nazi America... let's bring that whole fucking house down, eh? We also discuss the most recent Yes Men event and the plight of Ed Brown and the first use of the internet to protect it's citizens from a rogue agency under command of a roge government.
