Free Text to Speech on iPhone - Dragon Dictate

Hey everybody this is Josh. Today's cool iPhone app pick is Dragon Dictate. It's free in the App Store and it has text to speech dictation. I'm writing this post by talking to my iPhone. You can talk to the phone and it will send the words to be transcribed to a service and send it back to your phone so it requires a net connection. It works very very quickly and very very well. Check it out to the app store and it's definitely worth downloading and playing with.
Hey everybody this is Josh. Today's cool iPhone app pick is Dragon Dictation. It's free in the App Store and it has text to speech dictation. I wrote this post almost entirely by talking to my iPhone. Very little editing was required - mostly punctuation, because I was lazy and didn't speak it. You talk to the phone and it will send the words to be transcribed to a server and send it back to your phone, so it requires a net connection. It works very very quickly and very very well. Check it out to the app store. It's definitely worth downloading and playing with, at the very least. Permalink | Leave a comment »

Take Better iPhone 3GS Photos with TrueHDR

(This sounds like an ad, but it's not. I have no affiliation with the makers of the TrueHDR iPhone app, other than as a satisfied and impressed user. :-) If you're a photography nerd, you know that HDR stands for High Dynamic Range - where you take multiple photos, some with the bright areas exposed correctly (which makes the darker areas underexposed, really dark and unviewable), and some with the dark areas exposed correctly (which makes the bright areas overexposed and "blown out" - usually pure white), then combine the multiple shots in software to get wider "dynamic" exposure range than you could otherwise. It's a cool effect, and so far, I haven't found a good way to do it on the iPhone. There are lots of "HDR" apps in the App Store, but all the ones I've looked at, like "HDR for Free", don't actually do multiple exposure HDR - they just tinker with the exposure and saturation levels to produce an effect like HDR. They fake it, in other words. Then, over the weekend, I stumble...

They fake it, in other words. Then, over the weekend, I stumbled across an app recommended by TUAW called TrueHDR, that actually does HDR processing - you take multiple shots, one correctly exposed for the brightest area, one for the darkest, then it combines them. It was $1.99, so I sprung for it, and I've been quite impressed with the results. See and download the full gallery on posterous Check out the shots above - I noticed the sky was really colorful this morning on my way to work, so I took the first two shots (light and dark), then merged them into a nice HDR image with TrueHDR. Pretty nifty, eh? I never would have been able to capture all that color in just one shot on the 3GS camera. I also used it to take the photo of the Monoprice $15 iPhone battery in my last post. Even though it was only on my desk, the photo came out looking better than a single shot would have, in my opinion. Be aware that, because it requires the ability to take multiple shots of the same thing with different exposures, it will only work with the camera on the iPhone 3GS (where you can change the focus and exposure by touching a specific area), though it says it will work with photos from your photo library, if you wanted to load them from another source on an iPhone, 3G, or iPod touch. Also note that it does align the pictures if they're not exactly the same (which is going to happen if you're not using a tripod, and who uses a tripod with their iPhone?), which is a nice touch. So, TrueHDR has earned a spot on the page of photography and imaging apps that I keep on my iPhone 3GS. Do you have any great photo apps, tips, or tricks to share? How do *you* do HDR on the iPhone. Let me know in the comments, on Twitter, etc. I'm always on the lookout for nifty new apps! :-) Permalink | Leave a comment »</itunes:subtitle>

Monoprice.com (source of dirt cheap cables - seriously, don't pay full price for cables. I have no affiliation with them, other than a happy customer) has had a $15 external 2200mAh iPhone/iPod battery for a while now. I've seen it, and kind of steered clear of it, because I was uncertain of the quality. But then I saw a couple of reviews (at TUAW and Minimal Mac) that were happy with it, so I took the plunge. I also picked up two iPod cables, two USB AC adapters, and 2 12V car USB adapters in the same order. The total price was about $23. :-) The stuff arrived last week, just before the long Thanksgiving weekend, and I had a chance to use the battery pretty extensively, as I spent many an hour at my mother in law's house playing games and doing other battery draining things on my iPhone 3GS. So what's the verdict? This thing is the best $15 you can spend if you own an iPhone. Period. So what's the verdict? This thing is the best $15 you can spend if you own an iPhone. Period. The battery capacity is 2200mAh, which is about twice the iPhone's internal capacity, so you can charge it up (about) twice. You can also attach the battery and charge and use at the same time. The connection is the standard iPod/iPhone connector, so it will work with any device or charger that has one. It's made of glossy, smooth plastic, sort of like the back of the iPhone 3G/3GS (though it's thicker). There are tons of other external battery options out there - the Mophie Juice Pack Air is a popular one, at 1200 mAh and $79. But this little cheapie from Monoprice has almost twice the battery capacity at less than a quarter of the price. Most of the time, I find myself in easy reach of a charging source for my iPhone (my desk, the car, etc.), but for the times when I'm not, this little guy is definitely coming with me in my bag or in a pocket. It'll be a lifesaver for conferences, travel, and other all day events. If you have an iPhone/iPod, and have ever wished your battery would last just a little bit longer, or are sick of carrying around a charging plug and cable all the time, just to keep your phone running, you should DEFINITELY get one of these. Highly recommended. Permalink | Leave a comment »</itunes:subtitle>

My 10 year old nephew Jayden solved the Rubik's 360

I brought my Rubik's 360 puzzle with me to the Thanksgiving Festivities, for people to noodle on. I haven't solved it yet, nor have I resorted to Googling ways to do it. But this morning, my ten year old nephew Jayden solved it - got all six colored balls out of the concentric spheres and into the corresponding domes. Nice job, Jayden! :-) (And yes, he's wearing a Gnomedex t-shirt I gave him. :-) I told him I'd give him something cool if he did it, and now I have to decide what. A harder puzzle, perhaps? I'm thinking something like a Perplexus... :-) Permalink | Leave a comment »

Netflix Instant Streaming for PS3 Has Arrived

Just got the disc tonight, haven't actually tried it out yet. It's kind if lame that you have to insert the disc every time you want to stream something - as I understand it, it's because they're doing the streaming as a BD Live feature, which requires a Blu-Ray disc. A native Playstation 3 software app is supposed to be coming soon. Looking forward to that. I'll try it out, and let you know how it works. I can't wait to teach my kids how to use this. We've been Netflix subscribers for years, but I only recently discovered the Watch Instantly streaming library. There are a *LOT* more movies and TV shows that I'd want to watch than I thought I'd find. Not a bad deal at all. Now, if they'd just launch a Watch Instantly iPhone app... ;-) Permalink | Leave a comment »

Hat tip to @verso on Twitter last night for pointing me to this idea (<strike>I'll find the link and post it - want to give proper credit</strike> Here's the original post I saw on iPhone Saviour). It works great. Sits at a perfect angle. You'd have to cut out a little half circle to access the home button, and Matt and I were trying to figure out how to rig a dock cable, but that makes it a lot more complex. If you have some DV tapes laying around, give it a try! :-) Permalink | Leave a comment »

TinyPodcast: Makers, by Cory Doctorow

Download now or listen on posterous TinyPodcast 2009-10-28.m4a (1249 KB) I'm going to try these on a regular basis, as a way to share awesome stuff that I've found and want to recommend. Today's TinyPodcast recommendation is Cory Doctorow's new book, Makers. Cory is my favorite scifi author, and the release of a new book from him feels like Christmas. The remarkable thing about Cory is how and why he releases his books electronically for free under Creative Commons, and what that does for his sales and popularity. He always includes a great essay on the topic at the beginning of each ebook, so don't skip that part when you download Makers from http://craphound.com/makers . Let me know what you think of these little podcasts - I'd really like to keep doing them, and I think I've got a great flow down for putting them out. Thanks for listening! :-) Permalink | Leave a comment »

A Whole Shelf of iPhone Books at Powell's

I remember seeing the first iPhone book on the shelf a couple of year ago. Now there are tons of them. The weird thing is, I'm no more than mildly interested in any of them. The lead times and lack of ability to be updated make dead tree books a weird choice (for me) for information about a platform as dynamic and connected as the iPhone. (this photo and post were created wholly on my iPhone - a few phots stiched together with Autostitch, then tweaked a little with Photoshop Mobile, and posted via email using Posterous, all while lounging in a chair at the Powell's bookstore in question. ;-) Permalink | Leave a comment »

I've been waiting for this one for a long time, ever since I read about it on other platforms (like Android), and saw it demoed at Gnomedex 9 (thanks Beth Goza! :-) The coolest thing I've seen in Layar in my first few minutes of playing with it is the number of data layers you can overlay on your reality - Wikipedia, Panoramio, Flickr, and a whole lot more.
Got my invite tonight, and had my first real Google Wave, um... Wave? Conversation? Mind meld? What *will* we call these? Anyway, Frederic Lardinois and I were messing around with it on the desktop, then switched to trying out the mobile version on iPhones. There's a warning that your browser isn't supported, but you can "try it at your own peril". The mobile version renders fine. I could see Frederic typing in real time, exactly the same as the desktop browser (I held them side by side). And I could only see the Google Map after he was done with it (not in real time). It has some quirks. Typing doesn't appear instantly to other participants (and I had some trouble getting it to le me type at all at first). The popup menu to reply, edit, etc. appears way at the top of the page, so you have to scroll all the way up to it, then back down to where you were. This isn't meant to be any kind of formal review, just some impressions after my first 20 minutes playing with Wave. There's *SO* much here I need to learn - robots, gadgets, plugins, keyboard shortcuts, etc. Bit I'm stoked to have such a rich, exciting new technology to to wrap my head around. :-) Oh, and I don't have the magical ability to grant you an invite to get in. Sorry! From what I understand, invites shoul be going out soon, so hang in there.
I was at work late last night, and the moon and clouds were just gorgeous when I came out into the empty parking lot. Jupiter (I think) was really bright, too, next to the moon.
Most of you know that my signature footwear for the last few years has been a pair (several, actually) of orange Crocs. Yes, they're ugly. I wasn't making a fashion statement, because I have no fashion. They were comfy, yes, but not everyone knew the real reason I wore them (along with white socks): they were my "RSS Evangelism Shoes". People would hear that and say "what's RSS?" and I'd say "I'm glad you asked!" :-) I've always like quirky, distinctive shoes. The white-and-orange of the universal RSS feed icon is just the latest riff on the theme. But all good things must come to an end. There have been fervent opponents to my footwear. Cami Kaos even staged a shoe intervention last time I was on Strange Love Live. Cami, and everyone else who hated my Crocs will be thrilled to know that I have new shoes: Converse All-Stars, in white and orange. Natch. You see, it was always more about the white-and-orange than it was about wearing plastic foam clogs. The RSS...

http://www.tinyscreenfuls.com/2008/04/video-amazon-kindle-unboxing-and-first-impressions/ I finally broke down and ordered an Amazon Kindle, now that they're back in stock. It's an ebook reader device, and since I read so much (borderline obsession), and there are growning piles of dead tree versions of books all over my house, I figured a Kindle was a good idea. In this video, we go over the packaging, basic functions of the device, discuss its wireless features, have a look at the fabulous (dare I say revolutionary?) electronic ink screen, and generally check out the new gadget. Camera help and cameo appearances by my wife Rachel and our son Gabe. I'll be posting more thoughts as I use the Kindle more (I've had it less than 24 hours), but the verdict so far is: I LOVE this thing! I only wish I hadn't had to wait so long for Amazon to get them back in stock. You can find out more about the Kindle, browse the books, newspapers, and magazines available for it, and generally get more ...

Exclusive: 23 minutes of hands-on with the Lenovo and Aigo Mobile Internet Devices

OK, so I’m a couple days late, and I know I’ve been teasing you with photos and video “appetizers“, but I hope the quality/content of these videos makes up for it. While I was in Shanghai, China last week for the Spring 2008 Intel Developer Forum, I stayed a few extra days to work with the Intel Software Network China team, with the hope that I might be able to score some hands-on time with some of the Mobile Internet Devices that were shown for the first time at IDF. There are only about 20 MIDs in the world today, all prototypes, and they were pretty much all at IDF. As you can imagine, access to them is jealously guarded, and they were pretty busy being shown off, participating in photo shoots, etc. My access to them got postponed, rescheduled, and moved around a lot, until one afternoon, we got the call. “You can come play with the MIDs if you can be here by 5:30pm.” It was 5:00pm, and Welles and I jumped in a taxi right away, headed for the I...

As you can imagine, access to them is jealously guarded, and they were pretty busy being shown off, participating in photo shoots, etc. My access to them got postponed, rescheduled, and moved around a lot, until one afternoon, we got the call. “You can come play with the MIDs if you can be here by 5:30pm.” It was 5:00pm, and Welles and I jumped in a taxi right away, headed for the Intel Software group’s Mobility Enabling Lab. I didn’t have time to go back and get my “big boy” professional video gear, so these videos were shot on my pocket Aiptek Go-HD camera, secured by a GorillaPod. I think they turned out pretty well. Big disclaimer: the Linux-based software for both the Lenovo and Aigo devices I used is NOT final - there are some features that aren’t implemented, and performance optimizations that haven’t occurred. This is NOT how they’re going to be when they’re released commercially. There are crashes, slowness, and missing features in these videos. Think of this as a preview of the foundations of the software - what it’s capable of in general. Then squint your eyes a little and imagine the final version, a little more polished, sitting happily in your pocket. First up, here’s a 13 minute video of the Lenovo Ideapad U8 Mobile Internet Device (MID). It’s one of the more unique hardware designs, with it’s flared end, special limited edition Beijing 2008 Olympic color scheme, and hardware number pad, for T9 text entry. In the video, I take a detailed look at the hardware (Intel Atom processor, two cameras - the rear one is 2.0 megapixels, SD slot, GPS, USB ports, etc.), and spend some time poking around with the software/user interface: You can download the high quality (640×360) MP4 version here - the file is about 153 MB. You can also embed/share the video on your own blog or site by grabbing the Show Player code from the video’s page on blip.tv or by clicking “Embed” in the show player above. Next up is 10 minutes of video with the MID from Aigo. I cover pretty much the same aspects of this device in the video as I did with the Lenovo Ideapad - hardware (sliding QWERTY keyboard, two cameras - the rear one is 3.0 megapixels, MicroSD slot, USB ports, “Smart Key”, etc.) and software and user interface. The Aigo device looks very similar to the Gigabyte MID, which has been floating around, making appearances. So much so that I suspect they’re manufactured by the same OEM, but I didn’t get any concrete information on this, so I’m just speculating. Here’s the video: You can download the high quality (640×360) MP4 version of this video (117 MB) here, and get the embed code to share the video on your own site/blog on the video’s page on blip.tv, or by clicking “Embed” in the show player above. Now that you’ve seen the videos, I hope some of your questions have been answered. And, no doubt, you have new questions. I’ll do my very best to get answers for you, so post your thoughts and questions in the comments below. Thanks for being patient while I got these videos ready. I have a TON more video content that I shot at IDF, and that will be coming out as it gets processed/edited. But this is the juicy stuff, so enjoy!</itunes:subtitle>

But this is the juicy stuff, so enjoy!</itunes:summary>
