Happy Halloween from the regional army of zombie programmers at Insomnia Radio. When a chilly breeze starts wrestling the leaves to the ground, and carefully carved pumpkins take on an eerie glow, you can be sure the Marshmallow Ghosts will materialize to offer up another sweet audio treat for their favorite season. The Marshmallow Ghosts are as ethereal as their name- neither here nor there, neither real nor imaginary, with no permanent members. They make their presence known only once a year, and they’re certainly the first house you’ll want to stop at on your trick-or-treat route (if you can find it.) Effectively acting as the Graveface Records house band, the shape-shifting cast of boo-gooders on this inaugural release includes members of BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW, THE APPLESEED CAST, DREAMEND and CASKET GIRLS. The players change but their distinct séance sound of skin-prickling E.V.P. manifestations and eerie, haunting tones remain the same. This special Halloween 7” hypnotic sw...

PLANK (formerly Plank63) was formed in the Fall of 2000 in Boston, and today we felt like zipping back to 2004 to showcase a quality track called ‘Patchwork’ by this Massachusetts based group. With the release of their 2004 CD, Symmetry, ‘Patchwork’ remained in the Top 3 of the Hard Rock category of Garageband.com for a record-breaking length of time. They have received countless national and international inquiries about them and their music. Scores of companies releasing compilation CDs have sought out to include Patchwork in their marketing materials. It’s even been adopted by some local sports organizations as a their unofficial theme song. The band prides itself on being more than just a solid writing and recording machine, but a powerful dominating live act to be reckoned with too. Much of their reputation has been spread due to their intense and exhausting live show, where they adopted the saying: “Bring it and leave everything you’ve...

From Oakland, CA, Saviours deliver a sharp burst of shredding, riffing metal for today’s Daily Dose with ‘We Roam’, from their newest album Accelerated Living. “Saviours have made the necessary adjustments to deliver the goods with revitalized rage and the smell of burnt blood in the air around them. The sludge of previous efforts is all but vanished, replaced with forged steel riffage, Austin Barber’s ragged vocals, and precise, metallic authority. New lead guitarist Sonny Reinhardt (ex-Watch Them Die) pushes the band into furious, locked in riffing, making that Motorhead-meets-Exodus-meets-Born Again-era Sabbath crossover record, the one you always dreamt of, a threatening reality.

From the album House To House on Spark And Shine Records It is hardly surprising that the Tripwires have leapt to the very forefront of Seattle’s burgeoning power pop ‘n’ roll scene, for this is indeed a quartet of considerable pedigree and startling showmanship. Leader John Ramberg wears red pants and sings in a voice reminiscent of his mentors, Sam Cooke and Pete Ham. In a Rambergian world story and melody are as inseparable as chicken and waffles. I have believed for years that John is the world’s most under-rated songwriter, and this latest Tripwires effort is yet another horn o’ plenty bursting with compositional genius, adding to the considerable catalog of published gems from previous bands the Model Rockets and Stumpy Joe. You may also recognize John’s B-Bender pyrotechnics from his long-standing role as lead guitarist in the Minus 5, a group that certainly needs no introduction, nor deserves one.
This Will Destroy You are an instrumental quartet from the great state of Texas who play a cascading brand of cinematic rock music. The band is made up of guitarists Chris King and Jeremy Galindo, bass player Donovan Jones and drummer Andrew Miller with Jones also playing the keyboard for live performances. They are currently signed to Magic Bullet Records. While they recently released a new split EP, titled Field Studies, in January 2009 with the band Lymbyc Systym, we wanted to reach back to 2006, when TWDY released “Young Bear”, a six-song EP originally intended to be a demo tape – yet received very well by critics. This Toronto based trio mix defiant, brooding and eager lyrics and vox with driving, sometimes funky drums and bass. Add a few absorbing synth lines for flavour. Influences dodge and dart from The Talking Heads to the The Cure to the Chili Peppers. Most of all they are an original with enough personality to back it up. A recent EP has grown in to a full length LP titled Cell Phone Camera [to be] released in September of 2009. [MySpace Bio] See the links below for Purchase Details.
As indicated by a recent trip to Chicago’s Electrical Audio Studio (owned by Nirvana/The Pixies mastermind Steve Albini), Chicago band SLEEPING AT LAST have once again upped the artistic ante in this ambitious, self-produced affair, while concurrently maintaining relatability on all planes. Their third national release, Storyboards, is an intricate web that builds off the surging soundscapes of 2003’s Ghosts and the lush atmospherics of 2006’s Keep No Score, coupled with previously uncharted instrumental expeditions and glorious orchestration. “Every time we go into the studio, we want to stretch ourselves musically as much as possible and we’ve noticed that each record seems to have a couple tracks that hint at the direction we’ll explore on the next,” suggests O’Neal, citing the addition of varied string arrangement styles, the folksy ukulele and a plethora of earthy but exotic adjunct instruments throughout Storyboards. “This time out, the results are really intimate where we’re ...

Add in engineers Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian Circles, Guided By Voices) along with mixer John Goodmanson (Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater Kinney, Nada Surf), and the group’s third venture is truly a charm. Throughout the eleven interwoven tracks on the aptly titled Storyboards, themes of reflection, introspection, renewal and optimism are prevalent, in addition to an underlying affinity for nature.

A single from their upcoming album Heave yer Skeleton to be released November 2009 Cleveland duo mr. Gnome launched a lengthy U.S. tour 1st October that will keep them on the road until late December. The trek is in support of the November release of the band’s sophomore album, Heave Yer Skeleton and the vinyl release of its previous disc, Deliver This Creature. Their psychedelically syncopated sounds draw on a visceral mix of contrasting textures. Masculine and feminine, soft whispers and shrill yelps, pounding drums and soothing lullabies combine to form a discursive indie-rock collage.
From their debut self-titled album, this is ‘Devil’ from Montreal-based band Beast, who are playing various venues this week in NYC for the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival. “It’s hard to tell you what we do. …when we first started doing it we had no idea either. Count it in, see what happens. Slightly amused, massively inspired and very curious, we kept searching and then locked and loaded this CD. What’s the backstory? Well, we live in Montreal. Betty Bonifassi sang on the Oscar nominated soundtrack, Triplettes of Bellville…. sang at the Oscars actually. Betty also sang on the hit DJ Champion album “Chill ‘em all” which she toured to sell outs everywhere. Jean-Phi Goncalves has written, produced and played drums for Araine Moffat, Pierre Lapointe, Jean Pierre Ferland, Lauryn Hill and many others. He is a founding member of Montreal’s Plaster.
The Lights Out: Five Seventeen

From Boston, MA, The Lights Out are: Rishava Green (lead vocals, guitar) Jesse James (drums, vocals) Adam Ritchie (lead guitar, vocals) Matt King (bass, vocals) The quartet cranks out the perfect soundtrack to a bank heist: breakneck, anthemic pop-rock, with a barrel of catchy choruses and melodies stickier than the High Life coating their sneakers by the end of every practice. Behind a stacked wall of intricate four-part vocal harmonies, The Lights Outwrites songs about bounty hunters, guys getting killed by volcanoes – and love.
We’ve got some Saturday morning Americana for you today folks, from Iowa collective She Swings, She Sways. Taken from their 2008 album Wasted Love Songs, this is ‘What I Wouldn’t Do’. “The members of She Swings, She Sways were all born in Iowa and raised within 30 miles of each other. Nobody could have known that beginning in 2005, the only thing separating them would be the number of trips they’ve each taken around the sun. She Swings, She Sways coalesced in the only apartment building in downtown Ottumwa, Southeast Iowa’s post-industrial wasteland, when an acoustic duo (John Gordon and Cory Canny) met long-time drums and bullfiddle rhythm section (Jason Bolinger & Troy Morgan). Drawing on over 30 years of combined experience, the band began writing, recording, and performing in 2005. The band added two new players later – Jimmie Dalton (electric guitar) and Diana Garles (keys, vocals, trumpet). Since then, She Swings, She Sways has spent almost every minute together – sharing a house and completing five tours of the Midwest, playing over 200 shows. Their travels have resulted in many new friends and fans; a few broken hearts; and the rescue of Sassafras, a horse stuck in a frozen Kansas pond. And even though the road can be hard, they’re always able to find a girl’s bed to sleep in (though she may not be in it), and her mom usually makes them muffins in the morning. She Swings, She Sways released a self-titled EP in the winter of 2005, which was quickly snatched up by audiences across the Midwest. July 2008 marks the release of their first full-length record, Wasted Love Songs, which was recorded only a block from the band’s home and will be put out by Authentic Records of Des Moines. “Wasted Love Songs,” is truly a full-band effort; with each member contributing their own story of wasted love, or getting wasted due to unrequited love, depending on whom you ask.” [Cyber PR] Download | Subscribe | Subscribe in iTunes | Subscribe to All Links myspace.com/sheswingsshesways sheswingsshesways.com [Includes links to purchase Wasted Love Songs]</itunes:subtitle>

From their album Lay It On Me Transformation. Rebirth. Renewal. The Vancouver vagabonds formerly known as The Smokes have charted something of a non-traditional course over their half-decade of existence. The beginning? A rustic ode to Appalachia and steel guitar strings. Now? A seething all-pistons rock band fresh off recorded an album with living legend Steve Albini. But the crooked path they’ve taken has made the five-piece all the more compelling. With Lay It On Me the transformation is monstrous. The band’s sound is still smokey, still filled with backwoods stomp, but Albini’s fingerprints are all over this thing – the guitars snarl, feedback ferociously; the drums are as cavernous and imposing as can be; and the vocals drip with the sort of hot mic intensity the Chicago native has made a career out of coaxing from bands big and small. Recorded at Bryn Derwen within the wilds of the Snowdonian mountains, and during all night sessions in the relative tranquility of their local village hall, Shape Of The Shape is an album of contrasting styles, themes and approaches that coheres beautifully into a seamless entity. We get guided through verses and choruses of swamp rock, gothic bluesy chanson and smoky acoustic ballads, as well as a jazz-folk tinged instrumental — after all, the band take their name from the classic 1965 Stan Tracey cut — but the apogee of this collection is the driving drone-choral opus, Les Furies – sung in French, this is a very Gal...

From their debut full length album Labor & Lust From San Pedro, California, The Littlest Viking are: Christopher Patrick Gregory- Drum solos/What? Ruben Jesse Cortez- Guitar/delusions of grandeur We don’t play many instrumentals on Insomnia Radio, but when The Littlest Viking sent us their album, which is mostly of that type, we thought we had to make a welcome exception. Dr. Patch Adams is we think representative of the ten tracks on the album, in a style the band describe as “instrumental prog/punk. I don’t know if that’s technically a genre but if it is we might be boldly categorized as such”. The album is not yet available to download, but the link from their Blog will get you the CD for $7 postpaid. Or $5 at shows and Pedro Taquerias.
Today’s Daily Dose comes to you from an unlikely source: the depths of the music section of Reddit.com. Jack James, of Glasgow, Scotland posted a link to his self-recorded album Lights Off, Headphones On and it caught my eye as an offer of free indie music always does! As he says, “The songs you hear here were home recorded in a home. The majority of this album was done in the first 5 months of 2009 because of unemployment due to moneygeddon.” It’s an album of simple, heartfelt folkey goodness from a man and his guitar, his vocals have an irresistible Glaswegian tinge, and it’s free! Head over to his Bandcamp page to download it in its entirety. Download | Subscribe | Subscribe in iTunes | Subscribe to All Links myspace.com/jackjamesmusic Jack James @ Bandcamp

Jack James, of Glasgow, Scotland posted a link to his self-recorded album Lights Off, Headphones On and it caught my eye as an offer of free indie music always does! As he says, “The songs you hear here were home recorded in a home.

The title song from their recent album The Paper Cranes are a husband and wife indie-pop band from Victoria, British Columbia whose specialty is crafting infectiously melodic pop songs with heart-wrenching lyrics that make you want to dance until you pass out and cry into your pillow at the very same time. The music draws from a variety of influences from 60’s Motown to 80’s post-punk and has been compared to The Smiths, Elvis Costello, The Jam and The Cure. Though these influences can be heard in The Cranes’ music the songs still remain refreshingly unique. The band is fronted by multi-instrumentalist, Ryan McCullagh with his wife, Miranda Roach on the keyboards.

LA based favorites, Letting Up Despite Great Faults are set to release their debut, self-titled LP this month. It’s been a full three years since the release of Movement, an intimate collection of intricate and melancholic songs that received acclaim from the likes of NPR, CNET, and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. In that time, Letting Up’s sound has matured with more of the familiar bittersweet melodies and intelligent electronics, but is now also brilliantly layered with catchy guitars and dancier beats. To push Letting Up’s sound and studio dexterity to another level, they enlisted the sonic help of recording engineer Andrew Lynch to record drums at The Ship (Earlimart) and the finishing touch by mastering engineer Jeff Lipton (Andrew Bird, Spoon, Camera Obscura). [bio] The album will be available at iTunes, Amazon, Insound, and all major online retailers this month.

Slaraffenland is Danish for “the land of milk and honey”. Based in Copenhagen, Slaraffenland found its final formation in 2002: Christian Taagehøj, Mike Taagehøj, Bjørn Heebøll, Niklas Antonson and Jeppe Skjold. They expertly expanded on the guitar-bass-drums standard with brass and woodwind instruments, various racket-makers, and transfixing gang vocals. Many of them childhood friends (and Mike and Christian identical twins), they’ve spent years developing a sound that conjures everything from avant-garde to melodious addictive rock to haunting unison vocals. “We’re On Your Side” is the third full-length album from the group.
Today’s Daily Dose gives you some soulful blues to end the working week. From Samuel James, with the track ‘Cryin’ Blind’ from his album For Rosa, Maeve and Noreen. “James’ musical lineage stretches back to immediate post-slavery. His grandfather (b. 1890) played guitar in contemporary blues styles of the era. James’ father was a professional pianist, and trombone player. Samuel learned to tap dance at five, learned piano at eight and toured the Northeastern circuit professionally by 12. Samuel lost his mother the same year and spent his teens in foster homes. At 17 he reunited and rekindled a relationship with his father. Samuel James fully discovered his musicianship after a young woman broke his heart. He booked a flight to Ireland figuring the gray and rainy climate would match his mindset. Short of funds to make it home, he learned harmonica from local street musicians. Collecting enough change to make it back to Maine, he gave up a nascent painting career and dove head first into the guitar… Live, Samuel James includes some older material in his set, and when playing a song created by a previous blues master he truly makes it his own. His stamp of originality is evident in every song he picks. Clearly the historical torch is being passed to him from today’s elder masters and yesterday’s originators. Does that make him authentic? Let the listener decide if that is even the question.
Anton Barbeau: Plastic Guitar

From the ever prolific Anton Barbeau, we bring you the title track from his 13th album Plastic Guitar. “With but a few years remaining until 2012, Anton Barbeau has been busier than ever, spreading his “pre-apocalyptic psychedelic pop” far and wide. California-born, but currently residing in Cambridge, England, Barbeau has toured the UK from tip to tail, and has confused and amused audiences from Istanbul to Berlin with his mind-bending stage-show and auto-neurotic humour. He’s supported a crazy range of other artists, from Martin Carthy to Mono, Robyn Hitchcock to Robin Williamson, and is as awkwardly comfy in a smoke-and-feedback drenched village farmhouse as he is in a Paris piano bar. As a songwriter/recording artist, Barbeau is remarkably prolific. His latest release, Plastic Guitar, is his 6th since 2006, and features a variety of styles, from 60’s-vibed classic pop to laptop bleep-bop and electro-kraut grooves.” [IODA Promonet] Download | S...

From his 6th album Year In The Kingdom, this is J. Tillman with ‘Earthly Bodies’. “Year In The Kingdom unravels some kind of galactic wilderness. Tillman’s 6th album lyrically borders on mystic; proffering a transcendent union, an effortlessness. Strange and honest, this song cycle inhabits it’s own idea-scape; one seemingly obsessed with wrestling death. These are afterlife dialogues of a mysterious future. Celestial badlands.Unknown to just about everyone, Tillman started recording in April, tracking most of the instruments during the two week session himself. Hammered dulcimer, banjo, recorder, cymbals of varying size and wheezing air organs all feature heavily and lend YITK it’s bizarre scale, conjuring tidal shifts with tiny movements. The string arrangements, performed by Jenna Conrad, as well as transposed from Tillman’s sung direction, were intended to rest on chords almost counter-intuitively, bringing to bloom complex, decontextual...

Most noticeable upon first listen, however, is the production itself. While most of Tillman’s records evidence some shambolic home recording, YITK is undisturbed throughout. Out up front of the mix, and dry as a bone, Tillman’s voice is featured in a way unlike any of his previous records. YITK sounds liberated; it is far and away Tillman’s most joyful work.
With their third full length release in 18 months, These United States surrender themselves to unbridled rock and roll exuberance: ringing guitars, thundering drums, desperate yearning bordering on hope. Everything Touches Everything came together the week of January 20th, 2009, as 4 million new friends descended on the city of Washington, DC (one of two places, with Lexington, KY, the band calls home). Laughter, belief, chaos, history, frigid cold wild mercury winter morning sunshine – it was a good place to be making music. By turns larger-than-life and disarmingly intimate, this is 42 minutes of folk in the truest sense – a record of the moment, of the cultural and emotional forces that animate everyday existence somewhere down below the headlines. (But never apart from them. Bandleader Jesse Elliott had two different albums in mind; he let the November election decide which one the group would record.)
From their EP Sticky Blood Emerging out of the garage-punk constellation around our nation’s capitol, The Dustys signal their arrival with a cacophonously brilliant debut EP, Sticky Blood, released earlier this month on Merrifield Records. Born to write chopper music for long-hauls across scorched earth, these noiseniks meld the power-pop of Big Star with the woozy psych-pomp of T-rex, while fusing the sneering energy of the Groundhogs or the Sonics with stoned-out passages that’d sound at home on any labyrinthine Red Sparrowes opus. After holing themselves up in the studio with producer Eamonn Aiken (who’d also man the rumble of the bass on the short-player), the band would win the attention of electro-rock stalwarts The Bravery, who practically begged the band to join them on a meaty 30-date jaunt across the states — a proposition the Dustys couldn’t refuse. Growing up in the south harbor of Copenhagen, Naja was singing and writing songs from an early age and went on to sing background vocals in her parents’ group for almost a decade. As a part of the The Savage Rose she also landed two of her own compositions on their 2008 Danish Music Award-nominated release, Universal Daughter and wrapped a European tour with the band last fall. The record was mixed by renowned producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Nada Surf, Apples In Stereo) at his Trout Studio in Brooklyn, NY. The sound may be reminiscent of beatnik rock and blues from the 50’s through the 70’s, but there’s a lot more going on here. Similar to the moodiness of a Tarantino soundtrack, Naja’s vocals are deep, soulful and pure. Full of life and often with a wink of humor, her strong, melodic songs can take you from a rocking Saturday night to a bluesy Sunday afternoon.” [Musebox bio] Upcoming shows: New York, NY, September 15 – Just months from the release of her debut album, Naja Rosa will be performing at New York City’s Pianos on Tuesday, September 29th.
There is something to be said about dedication and hard work and The Sleepover Disaster are the embodiment of such a feat. The Fresno, California-based three piece have hit their stride with their first nationally distributed release “Hover” after self releasing a number of critically acclaimed efforts and self booked tours criss-crossing the United States. The band’s focus and effort have paid off with “Hover”. Blending a rich mix of swirling, lush guitars that build a wall of sound that carries their intelligent lyrics over the top of a solid back beat, The Sleepover Disaster have taken it to the next level.
Bringing some delicious chaos to your Thursday morning, today’s Daily Dose is from Nashville, TN band Darla Farmer. “Darla Farmer arose from the kind of disenchantment one can only experience when living in the musical mold known as Nashville. This septet is a rousing douse of musical Discordia, who makes it their goal to sonically please, displease, and please again. Inspired by Tom Waits, The Blood Brothers, Man Man and other musical outfits alike, their arrangements include guitar, bass, drums and vocals, topped with a blasting horn section, piano and violin. Using this instrumentation to their advantage, Darla Farmer is simultaneously tumultuous and triumphant; chaotic and organized. Darla Farmer’s first full-length album, “Rewiring the Electric Forest,” (2008 Paper Garden Records) creates a musical mattress made of rock and roll springs, pop comfort, and seedy industrial firmness accentuated by a pillow of psychedelic cerebral focus. Their music leads the listener to a bedding of insightful melody, but not without the necessary turmoil to keep you up at night. Whether the topic is apocalyptic or the distortion of history, the desperation of being stuck within the cogs of mechanical routine, or the plaguing sensations of dreams, Darla Farmer manages to marry word to sound in a beautifully grotesque matrimony that is both curiously endearing and frighteningly absurd.” [Bio from Paper Garden Records] With a new EP in the works and set for release later this year,Darla Farmer are one band definitely worth keeping an eye on!
