No surprise here that they too think every small business should be producing content on a blog. One of my favorite ideas in this vein is the notion that we as marketers must start looking at our jobs as half publishing, half marketing. The website or blog is the hub of an inbound marketing strategy while social media activity creates the outposts and plays a role in the creation of inbound links. The book certainly supports everything the two have been building over at Hubspot, and that’s no surprise, but I was pleasantly surprised with some ideas in the book’s final chapter. Particularly one that addresses hiring Digital Citizens as employees. The grading scale for this is pretty fascinating. Van Vleck consults with men on their wardrobes, hair and overall style. She found that while her clients loved working with her, they hated being dragged into stores to try on clothes – keep in mind these are all men. On one occasion a client suggested using a web cam instead. He would buy the stuff on his own and consult with her about what worked with what didn’t via video conference. At first Van Vleck found the idea a bit odd, but somewhere along the way she discovered a brilliant innovation. Today the Truck Club, a business she founded to take advantage of the video consulting technology, helps men around the globe not have to do something they hate – go shopping. (By the way, that’s the surest way to create a meaningful innovation) The Trunk Club concept is pretty simple – When you need something to wear you get in touch with your Trunk Club Expert, they pick out clothes based on style, need and budget and send them to your home or office. You try them on and get advice via video conference and pay for and keep only what you want. By the way, during our interview she shared that her little idea is poised to do around $3mil in its first year. Van Vleck is a wonderful example of what a successful entrepreneur looks and acts like – enjoy her advice and her energy. The point is that the web has certainly made it much easier to find great design from around the world and on the flip side created an unlimited market for those wishing to sell their design services. Some smart folks have built businesses around corralling and managing the introduction and design process and made buying and selling graphic design a snap. As with most innovations, these services have their detractors. The most vocal being some in the design community that feel this drives the price of quality design down and cheapens the value of great design. Whether this is true or not, the web has impacted most industries in a similar fashion. The ultimate answer usually comes from the market’s assessment of the greatest value. The process in croutsourced design is that you describe a project (in the greatest, brand oriented way you can) and designers in your chosen platform’s community compete for your project. In some cases the designers bid on your work, in others they submit designs in an effort to win a set award. Usually, you, the client, get multiple designs and alterations to work with on the way to a finished project. The true strength, and possibly longevity, of these organizations lies in the professionalism of their design community. The one that keeps the designers the happiest wins. The latest innovation in the industry is that your design competition can be open to public view if you choose. Some high profile brands have started to look to this model to get a design done in public view as a PR opportunity. Here’s an example of a public logo contest at 99 Designs and here’s a competition at crowdSPRING for a Tony Robbins web site design. Here’s a run down of some of the croutsourcing design players that I’ve worked with: LogoWorks – Actually LogoWorks, an HP company, wouldn’t really qualify as crowd driven in the same manner as these other three as they do offer your design project out for a bit of competition, but it’s a closed process with a fixed price. 99Designs – This was one of the first compete for an award players and has done a nice job putting designers and clients together at very affordable prices. Elance – The first and biggest of the crowd sourcing community. Elance’s model is a bid for project model and certainly not just focused on design. crowdSPRING – This is one of the newest players, but they seem to be capturing a lot of buzz and some pretty high profile projects.
SEO Is Not Really That Complicated This content from: Duct Tape Marketing So, I know this post will draw the ire of some SEO folks, but that’s alright, some need their ire drawn. SEO can be a complex science and there are those, Aaron Wall and Lee Odden come to mind immediately, that have much to add to the field of SEO when it comes to highly sophisticated implementations. In my experience however, the typical small business need only focus on three things to greatly improve their chances for showing up in search results for key phases. (There are many, many things that can be done, but get your head around these three first.) 1) Consistently create education based content that is optimized for important keyword phrases - another way of saying this might be write lots of useful information in blog posts and work the phrases that people might use searching for your business or the problems you solve in the title of the posts. 2) Practice good HTML - I won’t go into a tut...

(There are many, many things that can be done, but get your head around these three first.) 1) Consistently create education based content that is optimized for important keyword phrases - another way of saying this might be write lots of useful information in blog posts and work the phrases that people might use searching for your business or the problems you solve in the title of the posts. 2) Practice good HTML - I won’t go into a tutorial on the technical aspects of HTML coding, (if you want to learn here’s a great HTML site) but simple things like smart use of page title, meta description, alt image descriptions, heading and subheading (h1, h2) attributes, and anchor text in links is important - make sure you or your designer use them effectively. 3) Relevant links back to your site - search engines place a very high level of importance on this factor because they figure you like your site and will tell them how great it is no matter what, but if another site, particularly one they’ve already determined to be useful, likes your site enough to link to it and gives clues about how and why it’s good, then that’s another story. In fact, don’t waste your time, and please don’t waste any money, submitting your site to the search engines, they no longer care. Get another site to link to your site and the search engines will take note. The subject of backlinks has a long and sorted history in the world of SEO because it’s the place so many what are called “black hat” SEO folks go to get rankings in ways that the search engines eventually ban. The search engines don’t really want you to buy links-that’s not very authentic, they get nervous when you get hundreds of links in a day - that’s not really natural unless you have a long history of it, what they do want is for you to acquire links from sites that also produce lots of useful content and are related to what your site is about. There are many ways to accomplish the building of backlinks and there are very legitimate companies out there that can do it for you as well. Today, I would also like to greatly recommend a service called LotusJump for those who would like to increase their backlinks naturally and systematically for a fairly low cost. Disclosure: LotusJump is a Duct Tape Marketing Coach Network strategic partner and we do have an affiliate arrangement with them, but as I hope you’ve gathered, the only folks on that list are companies and services that I use and believe in fully. The way LotusJump works is that you sign-up your URL and choose a number of keyword phrases you would like to optimize backlinks for (3 or 10 depending on the $24 or $49 mo plan). Then LotusJump delivers a steady stream of link building tasks to help build buzz, get competive backlinks, submit content, social media links and directories that all make sense for your industry or chosen keywords. The list of tasks is not perfect, there are some that don’t always make sense and some that you’ve already done, but because the list is exhaustive and updates frequently you’ve always got lots to do. As I said, this approach isn’t perfect, but what I love is the exact step-by-step task list that just about anyone in your organization can work on. You can put in a few minutes a day and know you are making some long-term headway. (New features still in beta will also help give tasks for on page elements addressed in step 2 above.) I had a chance to interview LotusJump’s Tom McConnon for the this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Have listen as we discuss general SEO topics and specific LotusJump features. The idea for this show originated from some time that Scott and I spent attending a meeting at a very creative workspace in New York City called Meet at the Apartment. Meet at the Apartment is a study in the impact seating, lighting, color and placement can have on one’s ability to think creatively vs. work efficiently. Scott shares some research that suggests the need for businesses to consider creating different environments for different kind of work. There was a day when companies created cubes for admin workers and the creatives got the fuseball table. Turns out that cubes are not such a bad environment when you need to slam something out, but a space with high ceilings and lively images on the walls is important when big strategic thinking is required. I know that I am much more productive when my office and desk are uncluttered and neat. I’m more creative with Motzart but crank paperwork with James McMurtry on the stereo. I often take a field trip to a public library branch when I get stuck. The world of office design is dominated by interior designers more schooled in the visual aspects of office space, but my feeling is there is an opportunity for the growth of more off site spaces like Meet at the Apartment as well as space design that’s all about the different kinds of work we need to do.

I caught up with Michael Schultz, head of marketing for Office Live at a recent conference and he shared his views on the changing model Just recently they added Office Live Workspace the Office Live product and now you can: * Access your documents from almost anywhere * Save over 1,000 Microsoft Office documents in one online place * Open and save directly from Word, Excel, and Powerpoint * Control who sees and edits files; password-protected sharing And now they are inching towards the launch of something they are calling Office Web applications. This will live inside of Office Live and give users the ability to create online documents, presentations, and spreadsheets, much like Google docs, but with the seamless ability to use those same files offline inside the Office desktop applications.

Marketing podcast with Wendy Vinson (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download - subscribe now via iTunes As some of you may know I spent some time working with Michael Gerber and the E-myth and Michael wrote the foreword to my book. I had the opportunity to work with the folks at E-Myth Worldwide last month as I conducted a two-day marketing intensive in Sonoma County. It was a great event and a great opportunity to reconnect with some old friends. One of those old (and by that I mean long-time) friends is Wendy Vinson, who currently serves as the President / Chief Operating Officer at E-Myth Worldwide. Wendy joined me for this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to discuss the E-Myth point of view and E-Myth Worldwide programs. This episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is brought to you by iLinc - Web and Video Conferencing that's easy to use, affordable and powerful enough to make your online meetings really come alive.

Marketing podcast with Matt Flannery (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download - subscribe now via iTunes Mark Flannery co-founded Kiva.org with his wife a few years ago and their success has forever altered the way entrepreneurs in the developing world get access to the small amounts of capital that can make a huge impact on their businesses and lives. In doing so they have also opened up an entirely new channel of micro lending to businesses and individuals who would like a way to help the smallest of businesses get going. I think it sort of brings all this talk of economic downturn into better perspective for me. Reality Check is a compilation of some of Guy's greatest hits, posts and articles, but it is not simply a rehashing. This format brings his down to earth style into much greater overall context. When you read one of Guy's blog posts you get his thoughts at that moment, but a collection of his posts framed in a category, makes for a much more strategic read. This episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast is brought to you by att.com/onwardsmallbiz. Resources for the small business owner.
