This work is licenced under a Creative Commons Licence (yes Banksy you can kiss my arse) I mentioned on Twitter that I was planning a follow-up to these shows, and without even mentioning that the idea was around the theme of first, dorkland aka Walton (Viera?) in Second Life suggested I do a show on the first mashups that got people hooked on them. I did so on Twitter, Get Your Bootleg On forum and this blog and had an amazing response…so amazing that the show has had to be edited down and some of the responses dropped – but I still have 27 amazing tracks which are all classics and part of bootleg/mashup history (and a few were surprises even for me). Still ended up over 2 hours though! Very much worth it, because it is a 2 hour 20 long mix of some of the most influential and classic bootlegs of all time.
Here’s the audio(and video if you scroll down) of my International Mash Bash set (btw several inclusions of Lady Sov’s Love Me Or Hate Me means it is a bit sweary in places). The idea of the set was to combine audio and video - a new one for me - and in part represent Bastard and a theme runs through it commemorating 20 years since the Second Summer of Love (1989) - it seems piano house sound is coming back, so I wanted to mix old and new. Saarbroken DJ set by Instamatic Tracklist: DJ Contaminations - Stand Up Against Bonkers Justice Funkytown Kiss (Art of Noise ft Tom Jones vs Lipps Inc) Ian Fondue - Edit! Instamatic - Burn Yr Radio (PE Edit - Leftfield vs Queen & Public Enemy) Skynet UK - Back to ‘89 (Calvertron remix) Black Box - Ride on Time (Dreamland remix) AC Slater - Jack Got Jacked (Jack Beats Remix) Sonz of Loop Da Loop Era - Far Out Juan Maclean - One Day (Surkin Remix) El Barto & Liam B - Charly the Cat (Prodigy vs Depeche Mode) Prodigy - Everyb...

Ooh, still recovering from Germany, was a blast and great to see some great sets. Me? I was forced to play this as my set-ender under death threats from the inimitable DJNoNo; he can be very persuasive you know, that’s when you understand what he’s saying. Anyway this is Sound of Music getting the rave treatment - for the hills are alive with the sound of mashups! Here is one of my favourite things, in 16 bit going on 17, to cheer up a lonely DJ catherder or two. Do Re Mi Bombscare (2 Bad Mice vs Julie Andrews) Video to follow as soon as it rendered - yes I did an hour’s worth of video for my set, which as soon as I re-record my set (not actually getting round to recording it on the night) I’ll post also!

Sorting out some minidiscs I found some of the mixes I recorded years ago at the Parkade…now the Parkade is gone it’s high time to release them as a reminder what was so great about it Here’s the first Parkade Flashback - a nearly 2 hour dark dubby laid back ambient mix. This mix was for Traffic Jambient when me and Amanda Shinji rotated Sunday sets - I’m guessing it’s 2007, could be 2008 but I’m guessing probably didn’t release it then cos of the similarity with bits of RC 136 ‘All A World’s A Siege’ which was in the middle of my Psychic TV and dubstep mania…so that would make it around October-November 2007. Here’s one I may not play in Saarbruecken - it doesn’t currently fit in my set, but if the response is good I might play it It’s a A vs B of the Ting Ting’s Great DJ (7th Heaven Mix) which sounded a bit empty to me so I make it more squelchy, harder, more uptempo and nu-breaksy by adding Shut Up And Dance’s ‘Make the Needle Jump’ from their last excellent album ‘The Great British Public’. I hope you enjoy, and maybe will see some of you in Saarbruecken? Certainly I have several new tracks, an audio-visual extravaganza and a cracking set. And keep your eye on Radio Clash & Instamatic/DJNoNo blogs over the next week or two as I have new mashups, video, pictures and such stuffs to release. Oh and to those few who might have heard this before, this is the Mastered version, LOL. Shut Up And Ting (Ting Tings vs Shut Up And Dance). EDIT: Thanks to AudioPornCentral for posting my track as part of Illegal Sunday - thanks Simon!</itunes:summary>

RavEvil (2009 Prodigify Me Remix) - an original tune!

Rave music was my first love…and it will be my last. Music for the future….music made to last I started making music in 1990 so this challenge is a return to my roots - literally. Inspired and for the GYBO Prodigify Me Remix Challenge, Here’s a very Prodigy ‘inspired’ (ie. you might recognise the siren LOL) original tune I did in 1991, remixed for 2009. I even had to run an Amiga emulator to fetch it out, Workbench and all - yes Amiga MED (pre OctaMED!) 1991, Renoise 2009 shizzle 8 bit samples in effect! WOOH! Err… It’s very silly, and you can play spot the vocal sample - and yes I was doing darkcore in 1991, purely by accident LOL. Blame a certain kids film. Most of the tunes I did in 90/91/92 embarass me, but I was writing them with Kirk and James so we had a lot of fun…but this is a rare time to hear one. And it was released on an not-so-great Amiga demo so many years ago. RavEvil (2009 Prodigify Me Remix) is here. Enjoy!

I’ll pop back from time to time, doing the odd special set, time/work allowing. For those of you that missed it, I recorded the last set so here is more than 2 hours of continous mix as an example of what the Cruise Control sets and those 2 years pretty much every week was like. And a big thank you goes out to Mistress Bereford who stayed until the happy end, and Amanda Shinji and Andy Asylum who have run the Parkade so well over the last 2+ years. Long may it stay! And no you don’t get to see a naked Cybill Shepherd…(123Mb, 2:25) The Rock Steady Crew - Hey You (Justin Faust Remix) Celebrity Murder Party - We Want Titties and a Robot Cucumber (P-Funk vs The Trucks vs Vampire Sound Inc vs Kraftwerk) S’Express -...

<itunes:summary>*Well not totally, it's the last Cruise Control actually, but that doesn't sound as good) As I said in my previous post, I’ve stopped doing the Cruise Control sets in the Parkade in Second Life, which I’d been doing for over 2 years!
Another Santastic 4 video

When I heard Voicedude’s track from Santastic 4 I saw my favourite Christmas TV of all time - The Box of Delights in my head, and I really wanted to do a video for it - I asked but another person had beaten me to it. I saw the original video which is excellent but yet it was more of a traditional mashup affair with loads of Christmas movies and the Blink 182 and Trans-Siberian Orchestra sources, so decided to do mine as more of a simple edit of Box of Delights. I think it works well as an alternative to that video - I wanted to get more of a feeling of magic and delight and awe as a child of Christmas - and do a tribute to one of my favourite Christmas stories and TV series. Interestingly ‘The Box of Delights’ is Alan Garner’s favourite children’s story, you can see the influence can’t you? Download the 320×240 MP4 here

Ground Shelter (Hope & Fear) - two topical mashups

Russia, Iran and Iraq, Military Industrial Complex and various things…but history in the fact of Obama being elected president overtook me, so the paranoid worried bootleg seemed a bit at odds with the times.
The running joke has been that people on Twitter just talk about doing their washing up. So I thought today on the tube back why don’t I do a podcast doing the washing up to celebrate the fact I’m on Twitter? So Prosaic Industries bring you: WashingUpCast #1!!!! I hope you can hear me over the pots and pans. Actually I don’t cos my rambling is terrible, but at least kept short by the hatred of washing up. Videoblog recorded on Friday night at V&A with people throwing cutlery around in the background (hence the noise, sorry about that) and this is the type of conversation I have with my partner John on a Friday night, we talk about design and new media, t-shirts, visual vs textual content, pigeons vs doves of peace, and the Cold War Modern exhibition which we were there to visit. And you can download the MP4 here. The exhibition was quite good, especially the space age exhibits, and the 40’s/50’s radical furniture such as the womb chair, and talking about the cold war really did make me sad because as well as the ‘Where is my jetpack?
Peel Badge by Skreen from the Cuban Boys Today was the 4 year anniversary of John Peel’s last show - and on the 25th of this month the anniversary of his death. And fittingly I was reminded of this by the excellent Cuban Boys by the ever-present and psychic DJ Charles III (my iPod). Down down deeper and down! So, given that BBC has seemingly given up the ghost on a John Peel Day this year, I think a fitting tribute is to play this loud on the 25th (or today if you get it in time). It’s not totally the same without Peel, although Rob da Bank seems to be doing pretty well in his own way, there probably won’t be anyone with the same breadth of music and definitely not anyone with that history. The industry is far too marketing niche and career orientated for that to happen now. Cuban Boys - The Nation Needs You (7″) Cuban Boys - The Nation Needs You (12″)

OK for once under the vague and wafer thin pretense of being the mashup blog I'm supposed to be, I'm going to start (well for at least one post to post tunes I'm digging atm with links! woo! First up is Dunproofin - my favourite bootlegger of 2008 (and pretty close to that in 2007 AND 2006!) and friend of the show (he provided the lovely Radio Clash remix that now serves at the theme tune) and I have to say he deserves to be as big as Soulwax or GHP and has the skills to back that up. Don't believe me? - check this out: Dunproofin's Incredible (and he is an' all - Oasis 'Live Forever' vs M-Beat ft General Levy 'Incredible' vs 808 State's 'Pacific State') which I first heard played by the lovely DJ Lumpy at Eclectic Kettle isn't the first Oasis jungle mix floating around- there is a Wonderwall one which sounds like it was mastered on cardboard - but it's certainly the best, and with 808 too? Bonus! Also check out Police Klaxons (Klaxons 'Golden Skans' vs Police's 'Can't Stand Losing...

Bonus! Also check out Police Klaxons (Klaxons 'Golden Skans' vs Police's 'Can't Stand Losing You') which makes Stings (can I say one thing? STING!) vocals less than excrable which is some going. He also put out a 'best of' album, which you can download on torrent here - really really recommended, highly so. Especially the original FU2, and check out the new version on his site. Another contender for masher of the year is australian bootlegger Wax Audio - you might know him from his political mashes, but his recent and not-so-recent Maiden and Metallica mashes will make any metal mickey happy...but here he goes more for an 80's vibe mixing Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill with Prince's Sign o' the Times, and makes something that works for these times. I like the brooding quality here, makes Kate's track less than the slightly-god bothering track it is and more darker, doubtful. Mashups of Running up that Hill are rare apart from DJ Magnet's Pet Shop Boys opus, unlike Sign o' The Times which is fairly well remixed, and having tried to mash it recently I now know why - tis a nightmare to work with, so kudos to Mr Wax Audio for creating something that works so well. Mashing Up That Hill (Kate Bush vs Prince)</itunes:subtitle>

Also take a trip around my home town, it's the greatest town around, it's a city (well village) of pain, it's one big factory! (apols. to Mark Mothersbaugh) Podcast version (MP4 - 58Mb) * sentence may include traces of sarcasm. Please see a doctor immediately if allergic. Incidental, coincidental, and purely mental music used: Super Furry Animals - Hometown Unicorn Felix - It Will Make Me Crazy (big mix) Mark Mothersbaugh - My Home Town Richard Hawley - Long Way Home hometown unicorns - by Kirk and Tim -beam me out of here! it's a dump!

OK you techno-g33kz out there can help me - I have been creating video podcasts but having nothing but problems, because although if you follow Apple's specs for video that will play on an iPod, it still won't work depending on what software you use (does this sound familiar? And people wonder why I have a dislike for Apple - it's like QT Pro encoding, it runs really fast if you upgrade to Pro, and use their presets - yet runs slow even then encoding from other programs..hmm). Sadly the best encoder I don't have a copy of *ahem* and is really really slow - the first video podcast I did was created using the rough n'ready export function of After Effects - really slow, needs literally 10's of Gbs of space otherwise it balks out, but weirdly the most compliant. How odd). Anyway as I don't have a video iPod or Zune I'd be really grateful if some of youse fling these files at them and see what happens (and yes surprisingly Zune does mp4 and m4v, at spookily the same specs LOL). And can ...

And can you let me know what iTunes (if you use that) says if you (right) click and say 'Convert for iPod' whether it says 'No conversion needed' or tries to do so, and if the original file works regardless. Video podcast - encoded by QT Pro, Mp4 Video podcast encoded for iPhone, m4v Video podcast encoded by Videora - 5G iPod, 320x240 I won't include the iTunes created version. It seems to think everyone wants a m4v file at 640x480 HQ at 110Mbs. Nice. Thank you Apple for your bloat-friendly AppleTV-stealth-supporting specs. I'll let you know when I win the lottery and can afford the bandwidth/file storage, mmmkay? Thanks in advance - I'm this close actually dropping support for downloads/devices and going YouTube only, ironically that's far easier, unless I can find a solution. And they wonder why video podcasts didn't take off like YouTube? I think their answer is right here in this post.... EDIT: I think I partly worked it out - strangely old MPEG-4s seem to not need being recoded - looks like only certain sizes or certain types (?) of H264 files are supported, but I'm still interested whether the iPhone ones work with iPods too. The first one should be the most compatible - or is it? And yes those of you who've had problems playing it on your iPod try that one - it's a new (not H264) version.</itunes:subtitle>
