There are so many beautiful and inspiring photographs of when the Berlin wall came down, everyone who remembers it talks about what a great moment in history it was. After hearing such testimony I feel a great sense of shame and disappointment that 20 years later, we still have walls dividing cities, nations, and people. And while you’d think these walls would be on the verge of being torn down like the Berlin wall was not long ago, instead they get longer and they build more of them. Which begs the question, have we learned anything since the fall of the wall? Related Posts: Protest or Film? We Will Not Be Silent Redux Seen my Niece Lately? While in other cities, like nearby Breda, city governments have no intention of going back to the days of street dealing in back alleys and dark corners. Selçuk Akinci is a blogging-tweeting digital native, not to mention the chairperson of the Green Party Delegation for the city council of Breda. He has also spoken out and written over the last few years on the topic of coffeeshops and the attempts to shut them down or instate pass-card systems where only card carrying members could make purchases. When in 2008, neighboring municipalities to Breda decided to close down their coffeeshops in effort to chase away drug tourism and other alleged undesireable elements, Selçuk was a vocal part of the effort to serve the influx of customers by setting up more coffeeshops in strategic locations.
People around the world admire, hate, or giggle at what they think they know about drug policies in the Netherlands. But how much do they really know? To get beyond the tall tales and the half-baked explanation you’ll get from enthusiasts on both sides of the drug issue, it is important to not only look at the facts, but to hear real experience and analysis. Not to mention to learn the details of just what the political and social climate aims to do with the future of Dutch drug policy. As part of a running series of podcasts on the Reality of Drug Policy in the Netherlands, I begin with this program featuring a conversation with Freek Polak of the Netherlands Drug Policy Foundation. During the program Freek mentions this video of his face-off with the Executive Director of the UN Office of Drugs and Crime. Related Posts: Will War on Drugs Finally End? For just over 2 years now she has worked at a successful charter school and has a lot to say about what sets her school apart from traditional public school. In this program she talks about her experience while also explaining what exactly is a charter school and what do they mean for the future of education in the US.

The Union of Concerned Scientists put out a report recently which runs down the last decade of genetically modified crops. As you know thats a topic that greatly concerns this website; what genetically modified crops have done to and for the world. Although GMO crops have only been in use for about a decade, the report looks at this decade in terms of yield/production as well as the impact these crops have had on the environment. The results, as you can read and hear about, are poor for a technology that is supposed to save the world from hunger. In fact, it turns out there are a few other methods that have proven far more productive than genetically modified crops. In this video entry I go over the biggest conclusions of the report. <itunes:subtitle>The Union of Concerned Scientists put out a report recently which runs down the last decade of genetically modified crops. As you know thats a topic that greatly concerns this website; what genetically modified crops have done to and for the world. Although GMO crops have only been in use for about a decade, the report looks at this decade in terms of yield/production as well as the impact these crops have had on the environment.
Hugh Timmerman has been gathering facts based on his own memory of living under occupation in world war II Holland. The events that took place before his eyes and in his family home would forever be burned into his memory and remain something he wanted to better understand. More than 65 years later his research and his travels have helped him piece together the story of the allied plane that crashed on his property, as well as the stories of all the soldiers that died on his family farm. This month Hugh returned to the Netherlands from his home in Canada, to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary. Together we sat down to do this podcast, part 1 of 2, on what he remembers from his childhood during the war, his experience as an immigrant in Canada, and how he went about putting together this book. His Book: Bombers in the Night Sky The music of Utah Phillips used throughout this program.
Can a government be effective in deterring terrorism while still being completely transparent? Glenn Strachan has been asking this very question on twitter, and several weeks ago, I noticed. As someone who has worked in development for many years and travelled to almost every corner of the globe, Glenn is both interested in transparency as well as reducing the amount of terrorism in the world… yet he wonders if the two are mutually exclusive? Glenn on Twitter Music: Metric - Gimme Sympathy Constantines - Time Can Be Overcome Related Posts: Smoke Signal from Bangkok Technical Note On Route to Re:publica09 bm207 Tracking Corruption in Latin America Download Standard Podcast

The program inspired me to start my own, using simple equipment and limited technical knowledge, it was the beginning of this podcast. In honor of episode 300, Im glad to have Scott Lockman as my guest to talk about those days and why he started and how podcasting and his life evolved and changed since then (note its a special 50min long program, and there is lots of looking back at how things used to be and where we are today in terms of personal publishing and social media) Music: Talib Kweli - Rush Clash - English Civil War Related Posts: Vacation in 5..4..3..
Aluminum Factory in Pikaljovo 250 kilometers east of St. Petersburg lies the city of Pikaljovo, population just over 25,000. Until very recently, Pikaljovo was an industrial city, where people had steady jobs for good wages, and lived a quality of life accordingly. Yet in a relatively short amount of time the main sources of work in Pikaljovo suddenly closed down, leaving behind a city with little hope, lots of car payments, and shops that no one can afford to frequent. My friend Olaf Koens, an occasional correspondant on citizenreporter.org, joins me to explain what he learned while in Pikaljovo. We also get into the situation overall in Russia and even a little on how Moscow has changed with the financial crisis.

Bananas The history of the banana industry is one filled with corruption, crimes against humanity, and secret agreements. One such crime took place in this decade in Colombia, where one of the largest banana companies in the world - Chiquita, paid off one of the most brutal paramilitaries, in order to continue to do business and/or as their CEO puts it - in order to protect their workers. But note, they were not alone. Both Dole and Del Monte are mentioned as companies that also paid paramilitaries, the only difference is that they were never caught or came forward. The bulk of this program comes courtesy of 60 Minutes, who last may aired this segment on Banana companies and paramilitaries in Colombia. You can also watch this clip on the banana blog, an excellent source for info on bananas. The bulk of this program comes courtesy of 60 Minutes, who last may aired this segment on Banana companies and paramilitaries in Colombia. You can also watch this clip on the banana blog, an excellent source for info on bananas. The election of Arbenz threw United Fruit into a panic. With their extensive contacts within the US government, including in the CIA, they began drafting plans and allocating money to stage a coup and install a government that would hault any land and economic reforms that threatened United Fruit. Part of their plan, with the help of the godfather of public relations, Edward Bernays, was to portray the Arbenz government as communist and a threat to the United States. Their campaign was so successful that they had the full support of the Eisenhower administration, and plenty of weapons and military advisers to carry out their coup.
In 1999 the news came out that there were significant natural gas supplies off the coast of Gaza. Negotiation soon took place between the Palestinian Authority, Israel, British Gas, and a Athens based company. The deal they produced would have given the PA 10% of the profits, though it was to be put in a special trust fund that only the Fatah political party could touch. However that deal was never signed, and in 2006 Hamas was the big winner in legislative elections, and they immediately declared the deal unfair and demanded it be renegotiated. The other parties would not renegotiate. Meanwhile at the same time, Israel’s gas reserves off their coast are set to run out in only a few years. And a recent import deal they made with an Egyptian gas company, was declared illegal by an Egyptian court and that important source had been shut down. Now we are over 20 days into an Israeli military operation which has been explained as an effort to hunt down Hamas who are a danger to the security of Israel. Hardly anywhere in the mainstream media is there mention of the very big issue of gas resources and the supply situation Israel finds itself in. By law, as of this month, the new president of the PA was supposed to be elected. But because elections can’t be held, the presidency is supposed to pass down to the deputy speaker of the parliament (the actual speaker is in an Israeli jail). The deputy speaker is from the Hamas party, which would mean once again, that the gas deal powerful interests tried to hammer through earlier this decade with the collaboration of Fatah leaders, would most definitely have to be renegotiated in order to increase the benefit for the Palestinian Authority… which would mean a loss in profits for British Gas, Israel, and Fatah associates. During this podcast I speak with David Schermerhorn, a film producer, world travel, and concerned world citizen. He has been on three boat trips that challenged the maritime blockade by Israel, cutting off the Gaza strip from the outside world and keeping Gaza fisherman from fishing. He’s also put together a detailed timeline explaining the relationship between control of the Gaza waters, gas reserves, and military activity in Gaza. <itunes:summary>In 1999 the news came out that there were significant natural gas supplies off the coast of Gaza.
In 1984 a group of people started a hacker magazine in New york City. They would soon find people throughout the world who were interested in the same topics and sharing the same curiousity for how things work in this world. Eventually there came a radio program, Off the Hook, that still exists to this day, broadcast on 99.5 WBAI in New York City and heard throughout the world. I’ve had to good fortune over the last few years to have met and gotten to spend time with one person who’s been closely involved with all these developments, Emmanuel Goldstein. As just like last year, he and I have been running around the 25C3 and Berlin for the past week, and one topic I wanted to tackle in this podcast is what these 25 years have been all about, how it all started, and how he sees the present/future for not only 2600 but the spirit of hackers and critical thinkers worldwide.
Another day of wandering about the NYC tri state area. I’ll be heading to WBAI on Wednesday night (in a few hours) to visit with the friends at Off the Hook (99.5 in NYC). So you can perhaps hear me on the live stream at 7pm EST. (or download it later).
Out in the Northwest of the United States, one very important crop is sugarbeet, source of 50% of the nation’s sugar. Over the last few years, genetically modified sugarbeet has been planted by some beet farmers. This has left many other farmers concerned and upset at the side effects both short term and long term as a result of this GMO crop. Kari Lyderson is a journalist who has been following this issue. She went out to see just what is going on with sugarbeet in the Northwest and joins me for this podcast to explain the topic, the players, why this is happening and the many layers within this issue that effects our sugar.

40 years of war in Mindanao rarely makes it to the front pages of the international press. Yet according to Edwin Espejo, more attention in the international would do alot towards ending this long and destructive conflict. As my guest in this edition of citizenreporter, Edwin explains a bit about the orgin of the conflict, the goals of the groups involved, and how things have evolved even prior to 9/11 and the connection between Mindanao and other conflicts in other parts of Asia. I highly recommend his blog, which focuses on Mindanao and issues effecting the island, especially this conflict. Music: Chad VanGaalen - Rabid Bits of Time Billy Bragg & Wilco - Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key Download Standard Podcast

Germany plans to phase out nuclear energy by 2021. But there’s some question if the government will really do it. Now the news has gotten out that radioactive waste has been leaking in the storage area that was supposed to be secure for many years to come. Will this speed up the nuclear phase out? What can be done about the dangerous waste and who is to blame? Michael Scott Moore writes for Der Spiegel and has covered this issue. He also blogs at radiofreemike.com and he is the author of Too Much of Nothing. He joins me to explain what is happening and how the German media are addressing this issue.
