Episode 63 honors Rock Art Brewery winning their fight with Hansen Beverage Company in the recent battle over the name “Vermonster.” So in this episode Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski open up a couple bottles from this Vermont brewery. The demand was high so they weren’t able to find a bottle of the Vermonster but they did score a couple other unique ones. First up they sample the Jasmine Pale Ale which comes in at 5.0% ABV and only has an IBU of 8. Looking for some more hops Ken and Brad reach for the Rock Art IPA (II) which has a 8.0% ABV.
In episode 62 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski road trips it up to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota for Surly Darkness Day 09. Friday night Brad packed up the car and drove over night from Chicago with friends of the show Mitchell and Don Radlund, as well as Maeve Price and Andy Farley. The five of them arrived at the Surly Brewery around 5:00 am and staked out a spot in the line. While waiting in line for seven hours to purchase six bottles of the 2009 Darkness, Brad was able to chat with fellow beer podcasters Shawn Horton and Mike VanDelinder from Beer Genome Project. The three of them were also able to snag a quick interview with Omar Ansari, the owner of Surly Brewing. I’m sure you’ve all been wondering how the beer tastes. Well, the episode ends with Brad and Ken sharing a bottle of this fine Russian Imperial Stout and loving every delicious sip. Download the Podcast (196.3 MB).
In this episode of the Hop Cast, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski put down their beer to talk with the boozehound Kyle McHugh. Kyle McHugh helped to start up the boutique liquor store Drinks Over Dearborn. The shop is warm, intimate and very inviting especially for a couple beer lovers like Ken and Brad.

For episode 60 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder enjoy a couple Hawaiian beers that were sent to the main land from the Two Beer Queers. The beers they try on the show feature flavors you wouldn’t usually see from a beer in the midwest. The first beer they dive into is the CoCoNut Porter from Maui Brewing and it comes in at 5.7% ABV. This time of year in the midwest you are more likely to see pumpkin porter but a coconut porter is a great way to bring the fall season in too. The CoCoNut Porter came in a canned six pack sampler, something neither Brad or Ken had seen before. The next Hawaiian beer the two of them try is the Wailua Wheat from Kona Brewing. What makes this beer extra unique is that it was brewed with passion fruit. A big thanks to the Two Beer Queers for providing us with the beers featured. Download the Podcast (230.4 MB).
In Episode 59 Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are ready for halloween and are enjoying a couple pumpkin beers. They start off the episode enjoying Ken’s pumpkin porter homebrew that he had stashed away. They follow that up with the New Holland Ichadob Ale. This beer is usually pretty easy to find at your local beer store in the midwest. It comes in at 5.5% ABV which makes it a good session ale. Ken and Brad follow the Ichadob Ale up with Pumpkin Ale from Schlafly. This 8.0% ABV pumpkin gift came from Hop Cast fan Steve Wyatt. The Schlafly Pumpkin Ale packs some great flavors and is highly recommended, if you can find it. Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski would like to wish everyone who watches the Hop Cast a Happy Halloween! Download the Podcast (226.1 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

Episode 58 of the Hop Cast is a little different than normal. Instead of looking at different beers, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski take a look at six different beer commercials. There are not many craft beer commercials out there so the ones seen in this episode are from a few of the larger macro breweries. Don’t worry, Ken and Brad stay true and talk about these commercials while enjoying a few different craft beer lagers. This event was part of the AD Autopsy series from the Marketing Communications Department at Columbia College Chicago. We’ve included a small part of the discussion that took place with experts in the field of advertising. Big thanks to Michelle Passarelli for inviting the Hop Cast to the event and allowing it to be recorded. Grab a beer and join Ken and Brad as they watch a few commercials and give their opinions. Download the Podcast (291.8 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

Brad Stark joins Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder for episode 56 of the Hop Cast. The first beer the three of them review and sample is one straight out of Ken’s keg. It is the Stone Soup from New Glarus Brewing. New Glarus is a classic midwest brewery that is rather difficult to find out of the state of Wisconsin. The Stone Soup is a Belgian Pale Ale and has an ABV of 5.3%. After that delicious midwest beer the three of them move onto the Two Jokers Double-Wit from Boulevard Brewing. The Double Joker was a trade to Ken from Dale Miskimins and was well worth the trade. Brad and Ken really haven’t experienced too many double Witbier’s but this beer made them want to try some more. The Two Jokers has an ABV of 8.0% and overall just plain rocked! Brad and Ken previously had a couple Boulevard Brewing beers on another episode and those also didn’t disappoint. If you can find any of Boulevard’s beers in your area, we highly recommend giving them a try. Download the Podcast (260.6 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.</itunes:summary>

Shawn Horton joins Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder for a Hop Cast special. As you may already know Brad is a huge Hair Of The Dog fan and loves to share the glorious brew with anyone who hasn’t experienced Hair Of The Dog before. Shawn had never sampled anything from them before so Brad quickly jumped on his bicycle and grabbed a few bottles from his cellar. The evening this special was shot the three of them opened three Hair Of The Dog beers including the Ruth, the Rose Cassis and a Fred. Since Brad and Ken have already featured the Fred in a previous special they decided to showcase the 2005 Rose Cassis. The Rose Cassis is something a little different since it is brewed with black currant. This beer comes in a 8.0% ABV and is currently retired so if you see this beer snatch up a bottle.
In Episode 51 Nick Campbell joins Hop Cast hosts Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder for a couple exotic beers. Both beers they sample and review in episode 51 have some unusual ingredients you don’t usually see in beer. The first beer the three of them try is the ginger pale ale from Trade Route Brewing. Trade Route Brewing used be called Laughing Buddha, so if you have a bottle, it may say Trade Route or Laughing Buddha, don’t worry it’s the same beer. As you can guess from the name the ginger pale ale is brewed with ginger and it comes in with an ABV of 5.0%. They follow that up with the Sah’tea which is the latest bottle release from Dogfish Head. Both Brad and Ken were extremely excited to try this one and were happy it lived up to the hype. The Sah’tea is brewed with juniper berries foraged directly from the Finnish country-side and comes in at 9.0% ABV. Download the Podcast (700.2 MB).

The Hop Cast gets sour and silly for episode 50. In this episode Charlie Drews joins Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski for a couple american wild ales. The first beer they sample and review Ken enjoyed previously when the Hop Cast was at the Publican. It is the Brabant from Avery Brewing. This murky dark brown wild ale comes in at 8.65 % ABV. They follow the Brabant up with the Beatification from Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa, California. Wild ales are known to be sour and the Beatification is like a sour punch in the face. Special thanks goes to the guys from Suds Or Duds for the Beatification, it was a treat to finally try it. But be warned sour beers can take some time to get into, but just like hops when you start enjoying the taste, you wont be able to get enough. Download the Podcast (304.1 MB).
Hop Cast – Yelp Summerfest (Mobile Special)

This past Friday was the 2009 Yelp Summerfest at the Irish American Heritage Center in Irving Park. Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder made it out to the event to represent the Hop Cast and to enjoy some of the free food and beer. Some of the breweries at the event were Metropolitan, Goose Island, Half Acre, Two Brothers, Harpoon and Magic Hat. Since there were going to be a few local breweries at the event Brad and Ken figured this was a chance to do a few interviews with some more people. When Brad and Ken first got there the first beer they went for was the Metropolitan Flywheel, it seemed like a perfect refreshing way to start of the evening. The plan was to interview a few brewers and see what was happening in the craft beer world. <itunes:subtitle>This past Friday was the 2009 Yelp Summerfest at the Irish American Heritage Center in Irving Park. But unfortunately everyone who was pouring the beer was extremely busy all night and didn’t have a chance to talk with the Hop Cast. With 900 + people at the event there were just too many thirsty people. But Brad and Ken did run into Courtney Baldy who is the pastry chef at Three Floyds. Courtney gave a little insight into her love of desert and beer and the kind of things she is doing at Three Floyds. Over all the Yelp event was great. The beers were excellent, especially the Metropolitan Flywheel and the Half Acre Daisy Cutter. There could of been more food since they did almost ran out of pizza at one point. If you have a chance to make it to one of the yelp events do it! Download the Podcast (67.3 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.</itunes:subtitle>

Steve Siwinski joins Hop Cast hosts Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder for episode 49. In this episode they aren’t just drinking beer, they are drinking Pivo. That’s right its the Polish beer episode of the Hop Cast! The three of them drink and review three different polish beers. They look at the Tyskie, the Okocim Mocne and the Perla. Who knew Poland had more to offer then just the Okocim? Grab a perogie and a beer and join Brad, Ken and Steve for a Polish taste adventure! Download the Podcast (461.7 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

This is the final interview from the 2009 Alefest. Unfortunately the camera Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder were using died in the middle of this interview so the second half is missing. Brad and Ken did have a chance to talk with Doug Hurst from Metropolitan Brewing a little and he explained the two beers they were serving up at the fest. Hopefully in the near future the Hopcast will be able to meet with Doug again, for an episode featuring Metropolitan brews. Metropolitan is brewing some great lagers so if you’re in the Chicago area, keep an eye out. Download the Podcast (83.6 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

For episode 48 of the Hop Cast, Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined by Nick Campbell. It’s great to finally have Nick on the show, he has been a fan for sometime and Brad and Ken are both fans of his work. In this episode the three of them sample and review a hefeweizen and an IPA. The first they open is the Hefeweizen from Blue Frog out in California. They follow that up with the DogZilla Black IPA from Laughing Dog Brewing in Idaho. This might of been the first time Brad and Ken have featured a beer from Idaho, it’s always great to see what other states have to offer. So grab a beer, press play and enjoy. Thanks for watching the Hop Cast! Download the Podcast (488.2 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

For episode 47 of the Hop Cast Brad Chmielewski and Ken Hunnemeder are joined once again by Steve Siwinski. Steve told Brad and Ken that he had never had a barelywine; so Brad decided to pull out a couple big guys from the cellar for them to enjoy. In this episode they sample and review the Old Aberration, a bottle from Goose Island’s 20th Anniversary Cellar Collection. The second beer they wet their pallets with is the Alaskan Barley Wine from the Alaskan Brewing Company. Both these beers come in at over 10 % ABV, which isn’t something to be taken lightly. Download the Podcast (348.5 MB). Click here to view the embedded video.

For episode 46 of the Hop Cast, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Dale and Chuck. Dale came all the way from South Dakota with a few cold ones for Ken and Brad to sample and review on the Hop Cast. The first beer the four of them sample is the canned classic Dale’s Pale Ale from Oskar Blues. Dale’s Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale coming in at 6.5% ABV. This is Dale’s favorite beer and since he knew Ken and Brad couldn’t get it here in Chicago he thought he would share it with them. The second beer them sample is the amarillo hopped Odell IPA from the Odell Brewing Company. A big thanks to Dale and Chuck for being on the show and for sharing some beer that are difficult to find in the Chicago area. The second beer them sample is the amarillo hopped Odell IPA from the Odell Brewing Company. A big thanks to Dale and Chuck for being on the show and for sharing some beer that are difficult to find in the Chicago area. Ken and Brad didn’t forget to pour a little out for their homies. With 40 episodes down Ken and Brad are ready for 40 more, thanks for watching them and stay tuned for more.
