Graham Rogerson: Life Onboard a Nuclear Submarine

Graham Rogerson is a man with many faces—from Freemason to bellringer, from electrical engineer to world traveller. But it was his life in the Royal Navy that was the subject of our talk last night on Voices from the North.

His first ten years in the navy were spent onboard surface ships and included involvement with the Bay of Pigs. He was in the right place at the right time to see an island being formed off the coast of Iceland. This was later reported in National Geographic Magazine.

With the onset of the Cold War, Britain began to build up subsurface mobilization. Graham was drafted to serve on nuclear submarines. His talk on the initial training and life on board a submarine makes fascinating listening.

We all dream but my recent special guest on Voices from the North has made it a point to look deeply into the world of dreams and to share her findings. Margaret Bowater is the New Zealand representative for the International Association for the Study of Dreams and she has written a book titles Dreams and Visions: Language of the Spirit.

It is clear from ongoing scientific investigations and from the longstanding experience of traditional societies that dreams have the potential to greatly assist us in our waking states and in our lives. Dreams matter. They are a psycho-spiritual process. Use them. Work with them. They are an evolutionary gift. All mammals dream.

Elan Sun Star The Water Interview

Elan Sun Star is arguably the most published photographer in the world. Yes, I said that correctly. You can see his beautiful photographs on the covers of countless magazines. He visited New Zealand from Hawaii and many of his photos involve huge waves bashing the coast of various Hawaiian isles. I wonder if being around all that water has caused him to read the1200 books on water (over a 35 year period) he researched to write a book on the same subject. This interview is all about water. Need I say more?

Dr. Michael Klaper Vegan Physician

Dr. Michael Klaper has been a physician for 37 years and a vegan since he was 34 years of age. He was my recent guest on Voices from the North in another interview I recorded at Shangri La, an amazing place here in New Zealand’s Far North.

Dr. Klaper has had great success treating various maladies using a nutritional approach.

In our hour long interview we cover a broad spectrum of issues including Dr. Klaper’s take on some possible benefits that can arise out of the ashes of our current global financial woes. This eloquent man has worked tirelessly for decades in support of the creation of a gentler, more compassionate world. He compares the resistance people have to adopting a plant-based diet today to the resistance our forefathers had to slavery one-and-half centuries ago.

This Voices from the North interview is with ocean sailor and writer Lindsay Wright of New Plymouth. Originally trained as a journalist, Lindsay’s love of yachting has carried him all over the world and almost to his grave. His fascinating stories give listeners a glimpse into the psyche of a person prepared to do what he loves, despite the obstacles life has thrown his way. He describes with fondness a recent but bygone era when adventurous sailors plied their skills without the advances of GPS and improved sail handling gear.

Butterflies and the Vegan Lifestyle

When Butterflies became a vegan, there were very few resources available and little support to make such a paradigm shift in living. Today, there are vegan replacement products available for just about anything you are used to eating that is made up of animal or dairy products.

Listen to this inspiring interview as Butterflies speaks of the wonderful health improvements that came for her and her family and friends when they shifted their eating away from animal products to fruits, grains and vegetables. She even elaborates on the potential benefits of a vegan diet for your dog. How about that?

Dr. Cornelius Van Dorp and Antarctica

This is a five minute excerpt from a January, 2009 Voices from the North Interview.

Dr. Cornelius Van Dorp worked seven years for Green Peace as a ship’s doctor and was fortunate to be involved with the establishment of an Antarctic Base that was closed in 1992 when the nations of the world voted to turn the Antarctic into a world park.

A twelve month period in the Antarctic, especially during the five months of darkness, helped Corn to gain perspective on his life. The isolation gave him time to look at his life to that time and he realized he needed to make the best of his available time, to put focus on his family, to stop ‘hurrying and scurrying’, to look after the earth. This little part of our talk is well worth listening to.

In this 9 minute excerpt of a 2008 Voices from the North interview, Dr. Jennifer Cornell describes her astounding experience while still in medical school in the 1980s of researching TB in the Navajo Reservation in Arizona; this is the place that contains Monument Valley, familiar scenery from Western movies. The Navajo vocabulary has no words for human body parts and no words for pain. For them, health is harmony. Jennifer’s time with these people shaped her future direction in medicine and life. This talk touches areas most of us will never personally encounter. The insights are profound and fascinating. I’ve chosen to excerpt this simply because the Navajo perspective can help us to look deeply at how we view health and pain.

You could say that this special guest on Voices from the North is a classic case of Kiwi boy done good – he’s lived overseas and now returned to enrich us with his experiences obtained abroad. But I believe Michael Venner is more than that. The new proprietor of Coopers Café has had his considerable culinary skills forged in the heat of European kitchens and at Oxford he’s honed his knowledge and appreciation of the world of hospitality. In recent years we’ve seen the emergence of a growing body of World Music. Michael Venner presents a refreshing, philosophical and often poetic voice of World Cuisine.

On January 14th, 2009 Amanda joined John Haines for an hour on Voices from the North. She shared her beautiful music and stories from her life.

Undoubtedly most famous for her touching worldwide standard, The Rose, Amanda’s music and voice continue to reverberate around the world. Her new CD, Chanson, which she claims is her best yet, is due to be released in March.

Franki Wood is 88 years young and visited Doubtless Bay from her home in Lower Hutt. I was delighted to have the opportunity to interview her recently on Voices from the North. She’s lived through the Depression and the 1931 Napier Earthquake. She’s exhibited sculpture, spent a lifetime writing and performing plays, written a couple of books and she’s been featured on Closeup on TV1.

Her one book is called Franki: The Life and Entertainment Passion of One Woman. There is no stopping this lady. She’s even built her own caravan (trailer). These few words of Franki’s from the interview clearly describe her attitude to life, “I make the best of what I’m doing. Where you live, it’s you that has to make it.” “I never think about the weather. I never think about it. I’m too busy anyway.” There’s no complaining for this lady.

I’m too busy anyway.” There’s no complaining for this lady.</itunes:summary>

My guest on Voices from the North on December 31st, 2008 was Geoff Waterhouse. Geoff and his wife Naomi run all their vehicles at Paihia Taxis on waste vegetable oil gathered from Fish and Chip shops and filtered at what is known locally as the Opua Oil Refinery in their garage. Geoff suggests people could do the same thing anywhere. His little refinery is made almost entirely of used parts (including a coffee urn) gathered locally. He claims the finished filtered product is cleaner than diesel fuel. It is certainly less polluting. Geoff says his oil reserves from local shops are going up, as opposed to OPEC’s. We all know which way they are going. Paihia Taxis is the only New Zealand Taxi and Tour operator running on waste vegetable oil, quite economically, by the way. That is opposed to bio-diesel that Geoff claims is uneconomic. Geoff is the sole distributor in New Zealand for David Blume’s book, Alcohol Can Be a Gas.

Roselyn DeGaris is a modern master of the ancient divinatory tool called Tarot. In this interview she chronicles her fascinating journey with the cards, including a three week retreat in New Zealand with Imre Vallyon back in the 80s and further deepening of understanding through two years of chanelling sessions with Ramas. She describes how Tarot has helped her and how she has developed her own intuitive method of working with the cards. A profound musical offering is found in the middle of the interview and at the end, a channelled Call to Awaken by Tobias.

She feels compelled to interview elderly people and capture in print their family stories. These stories deserve to be shared. In our relatively affluent world of today it easy to take for granted the huge efforts made by those who have come before.

Ray Woolf and his Music

Ray Woolf has been in the music business for between 46 and 50 years, depending on when you begin counting. He speaks of his early days in England where he lived until he was 17. Early inspirations for him included sciffle music, Frank Sinatra and Elvis. For those of you that don’t know (and I must admit that I didn’t) sciffle music was the first mainstream music said to come from England and was a mixture of country and blues.

Ray Woolf sang pop rock music in the 60s and 70s. Ray was awarded the Entertainer of the Year Award in 1975, best T.V. light entertainer awards in 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1980 and the variety artists’ BENNY Award in October, 2008. Ray also received recognition of his services to entertainment by way of a Queen’s service medal in the New Year of 2008.

The music we spotlight during our Voices from the North interview represents a return for Ray to the Frank Sinatra-type American standards that he grew up with. Frankly, I think he sounds a lot like Sammy Davis Junior. Most of the songs are backed up by the very talented Rodger Fox Big Band, a group of young performers, mostly from Auckland.

Terri Stout and Acupuncture

John’s special guest on Voices from the North on November 5, 2008 was Terri Stout. Terri describes the shift she made ten years ago from psychiatric nursing to the completion of four years of training to become a registered acupuncturist. She has a saying, ‘Listen to the whispers or get hit by a brick,’ because her life is guided by meaningful coincidences. She describes the Chinese medical model which is based on prevention and puts the onus on the individual to take responsibility for their own health. She indicates that it is never too late to begin Tai Chi or Chi Gong. Practitioners may be ill in their 60s when they began and going strong in their 90s.

Acupuncture has been around for between 3,000 and 5,000 years and data is being collected today to show its possible assistance in cases of infertility, of all things. This is interesting, because the Alexander Technique has also been found to assist with fertility.

Acupuncture has been around for between 3,000 and 5,000 years and data is being collected today to show its possible assistance in cases of infertility, of all things. This is interesting, because the Alexander Technique has also been found to assist with fertility.

Terri is much more than an acupuncturist. She is an intuitive and a guide. She gives the example of a man who, through a couple of sessions, decided to completely revamp his life and work. Terri has found that people want to be given permission from someone else like herself to make changes in their lives. And she tends to be the visit of last resort, ‘the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.’

An inspiring example Terri gives is of a lady in her 80s with a motor neuron disease who has lost 21 pounds in weight in 5 weeks of treatment and who now has ‘Betty Grable’ ankles. The acupuncture has helped her to release excess fluids from this woman’s legs.

Terri describes moxibustion and cupping and gives an example of cupping drawing out accumulated toxins, the residue of old injuries. True healing occurs when symptoms move from inside the body outwards. Terri Stout provides her services on a donation basis or koha. Payment is sometimes given in fish, shellfish, furniture or ketes (Maori flax-woven baskets).

Acupuncture works on all levels—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. New Zealand national health insurance (ACC) covers acupuncture visits. Terri presents an inspiring viewpoint of the role acupuncture can play in the establishment and maintenance of health and wellbeing. The song midway through the interview is Leonard Cohen’s 'Dance Me to the End of Love.'

Dr. Jennifer Cornell Returns

Medical practitioner Dr. Jennifer Cornell returns to talk with John on Voices From the North. Jennifer sees herself as a bridge between East and West, native tribes and European descendants, and modern allopathic medicine and complementary therapies. She sees that her role as a doctor is to teach the people that come to her to take steps to lead healthier lives, rather than simply relying on a pill. In a wide-ranging discussion, Jennifer challenges the supposition that doctors should pronounce that cancer patients have three or six months to live. She gives the example of where patients have been misdiagnosed, then told they don’t have a life-threatening cancer and they still die because they’ve originally been given a ‘death sentence’. There is a profound lesson for us all here: take care with your words and the intention behind them.

Experiences are compared of a Native American Dreamer and mask maker on Kodiak Island in Alaska (a place with 15,000 people and 3,000 Kodiak bears) with the memorizers of Maori oral history; and Jennifer speaks of the importance of using local native plants for healing. Again the music of songstress Vienna Teng is featured, a song called Soon Love Soon. Jennifer closes the interview with more rich and haunting Native American flute melodies.

In this Voices from the North interview Dr. For them health is harmony. Jennifer’s time with these people shaped her future direction in medicine and life. This interview touches areas most of us will never personally encounter. The insights are profound and fascinating.

The knowledge indigenous people have always had is only being discovered in Western culture now because technology is able to corroborate the knowledge of the ancients. I will say no more. Listen to this talk for a whole different world view that will stretch your mind.

Gladys Farrant is a shining testimony to the value of Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) and the benefits of activity in general. At 75-years-young, she tutors Scottish Country Dancing and takes tap dancing lessons with a group of chronologically-younger dancers.

Gladys outlines her life with dance, the history and practice of Scottish Country Dancing, and her travels in America and England. She was a nanny and her husband Brian was a chauffeur with a wealthy family in LA in the course of their travels.

Hear some of the types of music associated with SCD—a Strathspey, a jig and a reel.

SCD is certainly good for circulation, beneficial for the brain and an opportunity to socialize with like-minded people. You’ll want to join a regular dance group after listening to this.

Listen as Reese shares music associated with the various stages in his life and plays several genres with three different saxophones and a clarinet. This is a laid back interview sure to touch and perhaps ignite the music in your soul.

Together Russ and Gina still do human values work with students in three Bay of Islands schools each week. Talk about tireless and inspirational servants of humanity.

I’m sure you’ll agree that the soulful music of this talented New Zealand band deserves to be heard everywhere. I’ve recorded this at 128 kps because I think you deserve to hear 1814’s music at the increased resolution this provides. It does, however make for a larger file size.

The music comes from Jah Rydem, the debut album from 1814. We play some of the eleven tracks of reggae that are fused with influences from a range of genres including R'n'B, soul and hip hop.

For information on ordering your own copy of Jah Rydem click here. You’ll have to scroll down a few pages on this link to find 1814.

Other areas discussed are the effects of dairy products on the body, chlorine from swimming pools and drinking water, copper poisoning (including exposure when showering in homes with copper hot water pipes) Shelley focuses much of her talk on how these toxins affect children and how positively they can be treated with homeopathy.

John interviews Australian Alanna Moore. Alanna has been a dowser/geomancer for 25 years and has specialised in making 'Power Towers' across Australia over the last ten years, as well as divining for devic energy fields. She likes to focus on practical applications for healing Mother Earth. She is well known amongst the international dowsing fraternity for her magazine articles, books and films.

Alanna explains what dousing is and how it can be used for good health in humans and in gardens. In a nutshell, dousing is an extension of our natural faculties and a tool to improve intuition. She described a study in Austria that linked behavioural and performance problems in school children to geopathic stress in the classroom or at home. Alanna suggested that beekeepers intent on having healthy hives and maximizing honey production would be best to emulate nature when choosing locations for bee hives. She tells a story of how a renowned douser outside of Belfast moved rocks around to balance energy in the area. The long awaited peace agreement was signed just after this.
Alanna’s book, Stone Age Farming, came out of research she did on ancient stone towers in Ireland. She describes permaculture and how it runs counter to the status quo together with it’s great recent success in Cuba encouraging food production within the cities.

Some of Alanna’s other books include The Wisdom of Water and Back Yard Poultry Farming.

Sue Bradford has twice been named backbencher of the year. She has had three private member bills passed into law in the last parliamentary session, more than anyone ever has. She speaks with passion of the role of the Green Party being a voice for the environment and for the voiceless members of society. She eloquently elaborates on how the Greens look to the long term—50 to 100 years—rather than the superficial perspective the big parties tend to have. Sue explains how the Vietnam War influenced her as a teenager during a year her family spent in Wisconsin. Her comments on the upcoming US elections are insightful. She describes America as an empire in collapse. She calls tax cuts superficial and ‘like fiddling while Rome burns.’ She speaks of the damage in low income communities of ‘pokies’ (slot machines) and how the main parties seem to have a ‘conspiracy of silence’ with issues like this.
