Read the full article on Etsy's blog. (Extended drum roll...) The winner of the Handmade Moment Video Contest is "Handmade Moments are Everywhere" by Daniel Kwan! Daniel's outstanding animation gets across the playful spirit of Etsy. Our judges and the community were all drawn to the cute characters. While the piece is fantastical, it also outlines the Etsy shopping experience. We think this video entices people and makes them want to learn more about Etsy. Congratulations to Daniel. You will be hearing from our chief bean-counter Sinohe who will be presenting Dan with a giant $3250 check.

There's No Place Like Here: Communal Living with Nikki Silva

See the FULL ARTICLE on Etsy's Handmade Blog, for more information. While traveling to help promote Etsy as a sponsor of the Bay Area Maker Faire last spring, I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation to visit the wondrous place that is La Selva. After a beautiful sunlight-through-the-mist drive down the winding seaside road of Highway 1, I reached Watsonville, CA, and eventually La Selva, where Nikki Silva, a public radio producer best known for her work as one half of the Kitchen Sisters, greeted me. Nikki led me through the communal home that she and eight others have built for themselves in over thirty years of hard toiling work. Naturally we waited all day for a break in the fog so I could get a shot of the majestic view overlooking Monterey Bay.

She found her home in a forgotten community in Narrowsburg, NY called Luxton Lake. Once a thriving vacation destination for African-American New Yorkers the area was mostly abandoned in the 1970's when the damn was removed and the lake was drained. Tina found a dilapidated 1950's cabin in foreclosure and with very little funds, decided to take the leap and fix it up.

Read the full article on Etsy's blog. Three years ago Alice Saunders of Forestbound and Francesca Zmetra of Thirteen Eighty-Five and the blog The Snail and The Cyclops became roommates in an old house in Jamaica Plain, MA. They didn't know each other at the time but because of their similar aesthetic and style they bonded instantly and became best of friends. Alice's aesthetic leans toward the old military Americana style with a collection of canvas bags, found bones, birch bark, vintage lace and postcards. Francesca's style is more feminine, wartime beauty parlor/ apothecary.

Etsy is proud to announce the beta test of Rearrange Your Shop , a new feature coming to the Etsy seller community very soon. This much-requested feature allows sellers to arrange items in their shops by dragging and dropping items. Rearrange Your Shop is launching first as a private beta, and once all the kinks are kicked out, we'll release it to the entire community. Visit blog.etsy.com for more info on this site feature.

Etsy is proud to announce the beta test of Rearrange Your Shop, a new feature coming to the Etsy seller community very soon. This much-requested feature allows sellers to arrange items in their shops by dragging and dropping items. Rearrange Your Shop is launching first as a private beta, and once all the kinks are kicked out, we'll release it to the entire community. Visit blog.etsy.com for more info on this site feature.

Read the full article on Etsy's blog. Artist, filmmaker, surfer, and world traveler Dustin Yellin is a maker as well as a hunter. Yellin creates intricate volumetric tomographic paintings and hunts for salvaged treasures during his extensive travels. The Red Hook Labs is a collaborative artist space headed by Yellin and photographer Charlotte Kidd. This 1500 square foot warehouse houses studios for sculpture, photography, painting, a video editing facility, a gallery and an artists' residency space. The move to Red Hook happened once Manhattan became too expensive for artists.

Every Monday night we invite the community into the EtsyLabs to craft with us. Last Monday, during our 3rd Annual Cupcake Craft Night, a regular, Nico - not only won the cupcake coloring contest, but brought along a friend of hers and made us all tear up with their story. Turns out, these friends met through Etsy. Susan has been a patron of Nico's shop, NicoAndMooMoo, for a few years and has come all the way from Australia to visit her and explore New York City. We made them tell their story to our webcam so we could share this tale with you. Have a peak. . .
