Nonetheless, I was more than pumped to see one of my favorite bands perform, even though I expected the majority of the set to be new songs. However, to my surprise, I stood pleasantly corrected! They only played five new songs in a seventeen song set. Jesse Lacey was screaming his lungs out to the new (almost scream-o sounding) Daisy songs as beautifully as anyone ever could. The crowd, and myself, went crazy whenever they began playing any Deja Entendu songs– especially during “Sic Transit Gloria”, my favorite song of theirs. Overall, Brand New has played a better set, but they will never cease to entertain me and they will always be one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Their sound channels the forefathers of heavy metal, but with a dose of 21st century attitude. Cuts like “Shockwave,” “Warriors of Time” and “Show Me The Way” pack enough explosive energy to ignite any crowd.   Vocalist and guitarist Gabriel started singing and playing guitar at eight-years-old, and he knew that’s what he was meant to do the second he donned an axe. “When I started playing, I was like, ‘This is what I have to do.’ I don’t want to be a fucking lawyer or some shit like that. I told my family I wanted to play heavy metal. My parents have supported my decision the whole time. Anyone else would’ve been like, ‘Shut up! Go to school!’”   Gabriel’s intense immersion into music has paid off. He formed Black Tide along with bassist Zakk Sandler and original guitarist Alex Nunez in 2003. Drummer Steven Spence would join their ranks in 2006, and after an incendiary performance at that year’s Florida Music Festival, Interscope signed the band. Black Tide recorded their debut, Light from Above, at Groovemaster Studios, with Johnny K (Disturbed, Machine Head, Soil) in 2007. As soon as it was finished, the four lads hit the road on OZZfest 2007’s main stage alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Lamb of God and Static-X. Immediately, they began to build a buzz because of their no-holds barred approach to infectious, arena-ready heavy metal.   Zakk sums up the band’s sound perfectly. “Black Tide sounds like four pissed off teenagers who listen to too much good music. When we come together, we make something special. We love Iron Maiden, Pantera, Metallica and Guns ‘N’ Roses, but we don’t try to be anything we’re not. We just get up on stage and do what we love.”   Leading up to Light from Above’s March 18, 2008 release, the band toured with the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine and All that Remains. Garnering instant acclaim, Light From Above sent a “shockwave” of its own through the scene. Rolling Stone named Black Tide one of the “Best Rookies of 2008” and “Metal’s New Teen Titans,” Spin tapped them as one of the “Next Big Things,” while Revolver featured them as a “Band To Watch” and included them on the cover of the August 2008 Mayhem issue, and Kerrang! proclaimed them “Best International Newcomer.” The band followed its release with an appearance on the inaugural Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival alongside Slipknot and Disturbed as well as playing the main stage of Download 2008.   After Download, Alex and the band amicably parted ways. Black Tide added guitarist Austin Diaz to the fold, and he’s been the perfect fret foil for Gabriel. “Austin is awesome. He learned all of our songs in two days, before the first date of Mayhem. We played the show, and he killed it,” Gabriel says.   In the end, Black Tide are ready for anything. Gabriel’s excited for what the future holds. “The band is so united now. We’ve never been together like this before. Black Tide’s stronger than ever.” That strength will only lead to bigger and better things. Zakk concludes, “The kids want more, and I want more out of us everyday. We’re like that arena rock band who just hasn’t made it to the arenas, yet.” It’s only a matter of time until they do.   www.blacktidemusic.com   ShareThis Martina and Jackie Interview Black Tide at Warped Tour Jackie and Martina Interview Black Tide at Warped Tour in San Francisco   BLACK TIDE Light From Above   Gabriel Garcia - lead vocals, guitar Zakk Sandler - bass Steven Spence - drums Austin Diaz - guitar     Black Tide come out of the gate with all guns blazing. Martina and Jackie interview the Millionaires at Warped Tour in San Francisco 2009 Millionaires Myspace About The Millionaires Millionaires started on the beautiful day of August 14th 2007. It was a quite sunny day, just like any other day in Huntington Beach, California; a perfect day to fly a medium-sized vibrant rainbow butterfly kite. But instead, Melissa and Allison Green (yes, they’re sisters) started to become inquisitive about their new Apple desktop and decided to “fuck around” on Garageband. After two hours of intense physical labor filled with blood, sweat and piss, they came up with the first hit, ‘I Like Money.’ They decided that maybe since the Garageband loops and vocal recordings (aka yelling at the Apple desktop monitor since they had no recording system whatsoever) were SO AMAZING, they should make a music Myspace. They realized, upon creating the Myspace, that they did not have an extravagant name to go along with their new hit. The two quickly decided upon Millionaires because it tied into the name of the song, ‘I Like Money.’ Within hours after posting the first song, they received a shit load of online attention and within weeks, were already on the Myspace Top Artist Charts. The day after they posted their first song, Dani Artaud (Melissa’s best friend) let herself into the Green’s unlocked household, as usual, since it’s part of her daily routine. Together as one, the three jammed to the new song. They were so inspired by their new creation of musical beauty, that they decided to make a new track in hopes that Baby Jesus would continue to hover over them. The three new band mates quickly shat out ‘Hoe Down’ within hours and posted it immediately that night. After that, their shit just took off. Over the next few months, when they had enough songs to play a show, they met up with DJ Hyphy Crunk, who immediately took them under his great bountiful wing. After some intense training and tests of strength and merit, they decided they were ready to play some hardcore shows. Towards the end of November, they played their first show at The Joint and the next night played at The Roxy in Hollywood. Their good friend Mark Maxwell attended the first two shows and after watching the positive reactions from the fans, decided to spice up their music a little. He first remixed ‘Alcohol’, and the online frenzy began to grow even more. After that, they decided to make Mark their producer. Millionaires’ fan base continued to grow at an alarming pace as did the popularity of Hyphy Crunk’s nightclub, The Heist. The band and Hyphy Crunk decided they each needed to focus on their individual priorities and decided to split ways while Sarah Mclaughlin was playing in the background. From that point on, Mark Maxwell took a hold of the demon reigns of the flaming Millionaires caravan careening straight to hell. On this demented course towards fame, they got swooped up by the Artery Foundation, One Moment Management, and The Agency Group. Now the girls’ paths were clear. They took their next step and made their first music video to their hit ‘Alcohol.’ After only 6 grueling months of being together, they landed a spot on Bamboozle Left ‘08. The girls took that stage and made it their bitch for the night. They were now ready to tackle the treacherous task of tour. They set out on their first two week co-headlining tour in July ‘08 with nothing but themselves, a rental van and a pink bedpan. The tour was sold out almost every night. This is probably because of their irresistible attraction to complete negligence of the laws in these United States of America. During the tour, they were asked to perform live on MTV’s TRL, which was probably the most horrifyingly terrific situation of their young lives. They also took that stage and proceeded to make it their bitch as well. During the course of this tour, they also released their first digital EP-”Bling Bling Bling” into online music stores worldwide. On their break from tour, the girls were featured on the cover of Bakatopia Magazine, had a article in the OC Weekly, did interviews on DJ Rosstar’s Internet Radio show as well as Forbidden Radio, and played the LA Pre-Warped Tour Party with Shwayze and 3OH!3. As of now, the girls are back at home in their hell holes constantly slaving over their next biggest hit. Who knows what controversial shenanigans these girls will come up with next! Tongue planted firmly in cheek, The Riverboat Gamblers continued to play house parties and shows throughout Denton and the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Gamblers burst out of the Denton college scene in September of 2001 on the back of their self-released 7” single “Jenna Is A No Show.” Both 2001’s self-titled release and 2003’s “Something to Crow About” were produced by Texas punk rocker Tim Kerr (Big Boys, Lord High Fixers). After the warm reception of “Something to Crow About”, the band soon relocated from Denton, Texas to Austin, Texas. The band first received attention from major record labels after their energetic and rowdy showcase at the 2003 South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas, but the band ultimately signed with indie label Gearhead Records. In 2005 they were signed to Volcom Entertainment and performed a stint on the 2005 Warped Tour, where the band was often noticed for its deranged live shows.
