Frequent guest of this podcast, JC Hutchins, is finally releasing his hit podiobook, 7th Son: Descent, in print! It’s out in stores and online retailers today, and I highly recommend you pick it up. If you’ve heard him on this podcast, you’ll know that JC is not one to expect you to buy into his stuff blindly, so he’s allowing me to release the first ten chapters of his book here on PDF! So get the download, check out the free fiction, and then get it from your favorite local bookstore or order online. For a limited time you can check out the entire book at Google Books here . I’m a fan of Hutch and of his podcasting skillz, but honestly, when you get down to it, this is an amazing book and I’m thrilled and honored to be able to feature the special edition in my feed. I personally recommend 7th Son: Descent with no reservations.
You thought I forgot, didn’t you? The deal with freelancing and spinning a lot of plates means some inevitably get neglected. I continue to update the ISBW PDF but I just hadn’t gotten around to actually editing and getting it turned into PDF format. Thankfully, the mighty Phil Lunt has come to my rescue and created some awesome ebook files for me! You can get the first three chapters now in PDF or PRC format. Did I mention it’s free? (intro, chapters 1,2 and …) Chapter 3- Ideas are EASY. Work is HARD (Direct PDF download — Direct PRC download)

Show notes provided by Carrie Kei Heim Binas. Additionally, Carrie weighs in with some good synopsis advice: My personal listener feedback on how to write a good synopsis — I’ve read that a synopsis is the place where you can “tell, don’t show.” After all, there’s not enough space to show, but if (for example) a major plot point happens because a character gets really angry at another character, you can just say “this makes the hero very angry, and an epic battle ensues” without going into much detail. However, I think that the best synopses are ones where the tone of the synopsis matches the tone of the manuscript. An epic tale should have some hints of grandeur in the synopsis, but a lighthearted tale can have a hint of humor in it, etc. My own main character is a bit irreverent, and the story is told with a rather “confidential” tone, so in my 6-page synopsis, I found room to drop 2 or 3 quotes of the MC’s language straight from the text of my novel, so that the reader could “hear” her voice more effectively.</itunes:subtitle>

I told Neil I’d bleep the bad word, but dangit, the quote is too good and I left it in. There’s one swear word in this interview. It’s quick, and Neil is soft spoken so people not listening carefully (like your kids) will likely miss it. But to quote A Christmas Story, it’s THE dirty word, the “f dash dash dash” word, so I’m marking this one explicit. Neil Gaiman and Matt Wallace – too explicit for I Should Be Writing. Aw yeah.</itunes:subtitle>

In the feed you will find the first document in a series I’m releasing called, strangely enough, I Should Be Writing. You will get periodic files from me expounding on what I talk about on the show. It will probably be enough to eventually release as an ebook, but for now you’ll get it in free PDF form. In this PDF: Intro- my writing past. Chapter 1- It’s OK to suck Interlude: Excuses 1 This is released under a CC BY-NC-SA license. Please feel free to print, distribute, even change as long as you release under the same license. Also, it’s in PDF form now, but if you want to change it to an ebook friendly format, let me know and I’ll post a link here. (I tried to do mobi – turns out I have no skill in it and it looks like crap.)

It always astonishes me that people get a lot out of my ramblings about writing, but Phil Rossi claims he was greatly influenced by ISBW. All I know is that a couple of years ago he went on to write the horror SF thriller CRESCENT. He then released it via podcast, and then it got picked up by Dragon Moon Press for release TODAY. Rossi is doing what I did with the launch of PFK last summer, which is asking everyone to buy the book on the same day, getting it more attention. Us small press types need all the help we can get! So if you like a good space horror tale, check out Crescent today.

Frequent guest, sponsor and good friend JC Hutchins has his print debut hit the bookshelves today. Personal Effects: Dark Art is a novel, a transmedia experience, and alternate reality game. We’ve mentioned it before, but now you can see what podcasting novelists thinks about it. As I said- in full disclosure, Hutch is a sponsor, and a friend, but I wouldn’t endorse this book as heavily if I hadn’t read an advance copy and think it’s worthwhile to read. It’s scary, touching, creepy, and fascinating. I can’t wait to actually start following the clues in the retail version of the book. Other podcasters in the vlurb: Philippa Ballantine: Chasing the Bard, Digital Magic, Weather Child, Scott Sigler: Infected, Contagious, Ancestor, Seth Harwood: Jack Wakes Up, Jack Palms 2 & 3, Young Junius, Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff: Number One with a Bullet, Shadow Falls, Diary of a Madman, Christiana Ellis: Nina Kimberly the Merciless, Space Casey, Matt Wallace: Th...

ISBW Video #9 - Book Trailers Revisited

Book trailers. Well. They’re hard. That’s about it. In this video, we have two versions of my WAR trailer, and lots of help and love from fans. I asked for content, and got well over TWENTY comments, videos and audio clips. Deluge of love! I couldn’t use them all, but I do plan on putting each comment either on the site or in an audio promo, so don’t think you did a bunch of work for nothing. And as usual, I forget someone in the credits- ARGH. Natalie Metzger did some graphic design doctoring on the WAR cover, and she created the amazingly creepy image of our new villain, the masked woman you’ll see in the video. Also, Will Hoffacker took the still pics of me and JR Blackwell from Balticon. [EDIT You can get all of the ISBW video episodes on YouTube now!]

She’s on a mission to kill the man who loves her. Why? Because he’s an idiot. Ten years ago, Nina Kimberly the Merciless was cheated out of the life of adventure that she truly deserves. Her father, the fearsome barbarian conqueror Marcus the Merciless, met his first and only defeat at the hands of, well… a gopher hole. Ever since this epic humiliation, she and the rest of the horde have been stuck in the rural backwater kingdom of Langia. Now Francis IX, the idiotic king, has decided that he and Nina should be married. She can’t kill him without starting a succession war, but the alternatives? Eww! Nina has long yearned for a hero to sweep her up on a glorious quest, but Francis’ unwanted affections have forced her hand. No more waiting for a quest to find her, it’s time to get proactive. She sets off into the big wide world, but the King decides to tag along, complete with a security spell to alert the Kingdom if he’s killed. Nina is force...

Nina is forced to swallow her pride and keep him safe… at least until she can find a way to break the spell. But nothing is ever simple in the life of a barbarian princess, and nothing is ever quite what it appears. The dragon is a pacifist (sometimes). The handsome rogue is a con-artist, but who is he conning? And even the wizard has a few surprises in store. While seeking the answer to all her problems, Miss the Merciless discovers that what she’s always wanted may not actually be what she wants. Nina Kimberly the Merciless is a comic coming of age story filled with magic, mayhem, and mercenaries, but mercy? Never. …and now you can get her story for free. In this feed you will find the full PDF of the novel Nina Kimberly the Merciless . If you like it, please support the author an pick up a copy on Amazon either in print or for your Kindle. I’m a fan of this book, I call it what happens when humor author Terry Pratchett meets fantasy author Robin McKinley. Good for YA and adult readers alike. If you like a fun adventure story, Nina Kimberly is the heroine for you.</itunes:subtitle>
