Plenty of people are objecting to video being incorporated into Flickr, a photo-sharing site owned by Yahoo. Some say, ‘this is a place for photos!’ or ‘it will be filled with YouTube-style crap’. And that may be the case. I personally don’t have an opinion. I’m an artist, I make media, in any form that’s presented to me. I’m also a paying customer of Flickr. I use the service to post photos from my Canon 20D, photos from my iPhone and N95, screenshots from my desktop and video games, and now, video. Today I had a thought, however, about this ‘moving photo’ spin that Yahoo has been dishing out. That phrase is something quite easy for me to smirk at, given that there’s only have 90 seconds of total running time, and video does not equal photos. So, I wondered. What if it wasn’t Flickr who needed to change, instead, it’s us? What if we turned the cameras not on ourselves, but away from us? Can we learn a new...

What if we studied this new sliver of a video genre? Jay Dedman, one of videoblogging’s early pioneers, had several videos that were just snapshots in time…. ‘moments showing’… that’s about the only term I can think of to describe this. It’s not us ‘performing’, it’s us, watching, observing…seeing. So I tried to have a go at it. A living snapshot: Bonus video from Jay Dedman from July of 2004: Freaking out, quietly. Thanks, Jay.</itunes:subtitle>

If you came here to get all nerd-sanctimonious about why your phone is better than the other phone and start a holy war, the exit is thattaway —–. This ain’t about you, flapjack; it’s about me. /flick Now we can move along to the story. I purchased an iPhone roughly two weeks after it was introduced, after much whining and lamenting about how difficult it is to simply go and buy a Nokia N95 retail. Wait, let’s back up. The only reason that I paid any attention to the N95 in the first place, was because of the legions of fanboys and girls (and even colleagues like Scoble), made SO MUCH noise about the thing vs. Apple’s iPhone. But hey, east coast vs. west coast; Ford vs. Chevy, Gators vs. Seminoles. Mac vs. PC. Religion is religion. To me, the Nokia was the clear winner over the iPhone, kind of like how a Jeep is better than a Lexus SUV off-road. Yes, the iPhone is comfy and cushy and shiny and all. Maybe it’s all about the driver, I dunno. Y...

Yet Nokia is impossible to easily deal with in the US– in fact, Nokia is in second to last place of volume of phones sold (Sanyo is last). My last experience was being sent through phone hell trying to get a simple question answered about specs, as my last video noted. Thankfully, someone from Nokia’s LetsTalk.com site reached out and confirmed that it was the phone I was hoping it was, and through a series of e-mails, handily helped me to the point of satisfaction. I ordered the phone and switched from my iPhone to the Nokia. Two things to cover: the process to switch FROM an iPhone to a non iPhone and early impressions about the N95 8GB. 1. I was fully expecting to get iScrewed for some reason by pseudo-canceling the iPhone plan and going back to a normal AT&T plan, which wasn’t the case at all (thankfully!). The AT&T rep simply removed the iPhone sim with a pin, popped it in my N95 and adjusted my plan to match what I had on the iPhone. (She also had to get a manager to do some voodoo since the phone is an unlocked phone, but that only took about 2 seconds). My new full-on data rate is 50-something instead of 40-something dollars. So yeah, I’m paying more but it’s not too big of a deal. I was a Cingular AT&T customer prior to getting the iPhone (I miss that Blackberry Pearl, so kewwwt), so I don’t have any story to tell about new customer signup/cancel/switching. All in all, pretty seamless experience. 2. I’d probably be annoyed having to go all old school on text entry if I hadn’t been playing with Skype on the Playstation Portable earlier in the day where I tap-tap-tap-letter, tap-tap-tap-letter until the end of time. But hey, if you like driving, you have to deal with traffic. That’s life. I immediately installed Kyte, and later, Shozu and started setting up all the bookmarks to the standard sites, Google Reader, et al. I even used the built-in barcode reader to scan the QR code I put on this very web site about a month ago (and I know have this hairbrained notion to keep changing up the code since it’s in the news, and I’m THAT level of nerd to barcode-scan my own blog artwork. SUE ME) So far, I love it. Learning curves aren’t an issue for me, I just know how the basic technologies of the world work, and a smartphone to me, is a basic technology. Couple of nuanced things that bug me, but I blame my own hurriedness in not figuring it out. One more thing, the AT&T clerk was mighty impressed with the phone and the Kyte demo I broadcast, as was the Sprint clerk (who immediately fell in love with the phone (yes, Sprint, I had to go to a Sprint store on an un-related issue)). The phone is sexy enough and kicks off a certain vibe of, “I mean business, kids.” Sure, I’ll miss the multi-touch, but hey– there will come a day when we’ll all have multi-touch and video broadcasting as the default (and we’ll complain about why so few phones have Minority Report-styled holoscreens). I’m very happy with the N95 with roadtime five hours and counting, as well as with the process of switching. Of course, special shout out to the folks at LetsTalk.com for reaching out to answer questions and point me in the right direction. Happy camper am I. Of course, special shout out to the folks at LetsTalk.com for reaching out to answer questions and point me in the right direction. Happy camper am I. I don’t want to be crazy hermit man in the cave, but come ON people. Give people some space. Eyejot, is really simple. Video mail, the end. No really, I just record a video and send it to either a) another Eyejot user or b) an email address. It’s free or 14.95 for an entire year (which gets more bells and whistles, recording time from 1 minute to 5, uploads, mobile access and the like. It works well on the iphone and you can subscribe to your inbox as a podcast feed. This is smart and super simple. Here’s a vid: – Feel free to add me to your addressbook, I’m ericrice, or just drop a note to me at my typical gmail account.

The Next Great Social Hack

This video became popular so I decided to post it here so people could comment on it. This is, in a way, the next level beyond the Facebook-data scraping incident. This is social hacking; social engineering. The creation of fake personas, carefully nuanced with mundane details and mediocrity, the fake ‘average guy’, when developed over a long period of time, can be an ingenious platform to scrape data, mine data, infiltrate social networks and communities.
