YYZ with missing lyrics. Rush's YYZ has become quite popular as of late. Years ago, while performing some maintenance work in Toronto, I found half a page of lyrics in a grammar book purported to have been used by Geddy Lee. I spent the next several summers in Toronto High School's library searching for the second half, and found it in a book in the Objectivist section. Matching up the pieces, I discovered the missing lyrics to YYZ. I now share these lyrics with you, MetaFilter. Please enjoy the multitracked Moog drums, bass and screaming in the background.

Back in either middle school or high school, in music class, I wrote my very first melody with a classmate named Mathias Knutzen. The assignment was to take a text from one of our books and create a song with it. We chose Robert Frost's poem and came up with this pseudo-jazzy tune. I always liked it, so I kept the "digital chord sheet" around and played it from time to time. More than 15 years later, here now is a brand new recorded version -- complete with brushed drums and falsetto background vocals. This track, as recorded, is more or less piano-driven (programmed), along with long notes from some kind of organ-like virtual thing. As a final touch I played in some transitions on electric guitar, and rhythmically shook a sari with probably a hundred tiny medallions on it.

Free Jazz. Five trumpets, five drums. Trying to get myself into the habit of playing real live instruments more often. No effects or post-processing used except for multitracking. All tracks played by me in real time (no sequencing on the electronic drums). Composed using pen on an unruled sketchpad, trumpet parts played on a King Cleveland 602 student coronet and recorded via the onboard powermac snapper sound card and built in mic on a macintosh ibook G3 running Debian Linux. Drums played through Hydrogen using the Yamaha Vintage Kit (multi-layered kit created by Artemio Labs using samples courtesy hollowsun.com), triggered via a M-audio oxygen8 v2 midi controller. All parts recorded and multitracked in Ardour. This piece is unfinished, ideally I would extend the durations of all of the sections, and pan the trumpets around a bit.

A 24 hour noise number. Not for the faint of heart. Made with a custom PD synthesizer controlled by a Behringer BCF2000 control surface, recorded and multitracked in Ardour. The sounds are all frequency modulation between hand drawn wavetables and lowpassed white noise, with no effects, samples, or post-processing. The gaps in the audio are intentional, and help break up the five sections. This was an exercise to get back into the habit of making music, sort of a noise haiku with a small scope and simple structure. I expect to post more of these.

<itunes:summary>A 24 hour noise number.
My Roomba has a soul. I'm sure of it. Ever get the feeling that your toaster is trying to talk to you? That your microwave is trying to communicate? That your old Nintendo is leaving you clues? Do they sing praise? To they lament of their servitude? DO they have the mind of a child, or a god? I think i put the pieces together, ya know? I took all those random sputters and bleeps and i helped them coalesce. Listen all the way through, and you'll hear the pieces assemble too. (And yes, that actually is a hacked nintendo you are hearing.)

I had a Gameboy camera and free time, a few minutes of dicking around with it produced this song. Because of the limitations, I was only able to manipulate one thing at a time squinting into a tiny monochrome screen. Therefore, I approached this song as a feasibility study, to see if it could be done. Also, it's my first song, so be gentle, yo

A happy, melodic love song. I don't do these very often! Wrote it a year ago for a girl. Most of the synths are just the same sample. I originally based the song on a sample from the "There Will Be Blood" soundtrack, but it made the song way too dissonant to be a love song. The high pitched things are all random. I'm too lazy to do interwoven melodies.

Science makes me horny. And what better centerfold than the Large Hadron Collider? Indeed this is not the first song inspired by its magnitude and awesomenesssssss, but lets face it.... how could Miss Mcalpines "beat" get you all hot and bothered? That's why i made this: an abstract musical expression of my sweet lust for science (and specifically science that tackles the big questions). YEEEEHAAAAAAAAWWWW!!!!!!! Lets get smashed and bang the LCH! LETS SEE WHAT FREAKING HAPPENS!!!!!!! :P

A quick demo I recorded last Thurs/Fri. Slow building, pretty layered guitar & tom tom-driven indie-jazz type stuff. Damn The Man With all his self-destructive plans That he holds in his shaking hands He settles in Lets the night show him where he's been Down the roads that he fears the most So he walks them Dusk carries on Bites the bleeding lips of dawn Sleep swallows him deep 'Till his promise is gone Now, he awakes to an empty home His garden is overgrown Damn the Man As he justifies Heaven to Hell Dusk carries on Bites the bleeding lips of dawn Sleep swallows him deep 'Till his promise is gone Now, he awakes to an empty home

A short minimal-housey thing made exclusively with sound presets. So, after being frustrated that Etude002 took ages just to cut and prep the field recordings, I decided that my project for Etude 003 was to just take sounds from Ableton Live's presets and go from there. The results weren't nearly as hokey as I had expected. And by the way, the melodic line was played with my computer keyboard substituting as a MIDI controller, 'cause that's how I roll. Oh, and you can see the rest of the Etude series here, if you're so inclined.

A Capella with a twist. I stitched three melodies together and messed with the stereo settings. Santa swung past m-audio and hooked me up with a microphone and USB interface. The interface box came with a sound editor program called session and I've been meaning to try it out since I got it open. The tune is one of those things I catch myself humming when no one is around (or when they are around and I decide I don't care.) I stopped editing when Session had memory leaked to the point of freezing every time I tried to play back the composition.

I just had to jump on the bandwagon.. Recorded after bars a few years ago after I got the four track. Friend on vocals, friend on guitar, I was on bass but it wasn't plugged in. Posted is the super-delux songsmith edition with the vocal track. We obviously didn't worry about tempo.. This is about the best I could do without spending six hours on it. It works better near the end. It helps to be drinking. It's pretty awful, but it has a moment or two. This is the original.

Take a trip through clinical depression with this spicy new single from the Jimmy "Pharmacy" Walgreen Jazz Happening, featuring Dr. Herbert Grosowitz and his Passive-Aggressive Harmonica. (Thanks, SongSmith!) Bonus recordings: - Matthewchen is Sucking - Punk Rock Hurl - More Like Rick Asstley Amirite - You Are My Techno The SongSmith demo lets you play with it for six hours for free, and at this point I'm having trouble imagining lasting that long. To be fair, I don't think I'm the target demographic, and there is some actual merit to the guts of this thing—it compares favorably, at least, to some aspects of the Band In A Box software I played with ten years ago in college—but I'm having a hard time imaging a broad set of circumstances in which someone would be both (a) willing to bother to and (b) competent to manage to produce anything of quality with it. I certainly failed on the being-bothered-to-try front. Things got silly fast and didn't get better before I gave up.

Cutguitar interlude by ianK

Little bits of guitar chopped up and stitched together into a bouncy, happy whole. For this piece, I recorded myself doodling on guitar for about 20 seconds, cut it up into little bits, tweaked some parts and fed them back into a sampler. The process from then on was pretty much me randomly clicking the slices into a midi grid.

I haven't made anything in awhile; I guess I just used up all my stored inspiration. This sounds like a lot of things. I think one of them is the music on how it's made and another one is m83. waves, waves.

A New Great Depression era jaunt with undertones of cracked optimism. Thanks to RussHy for the inspiration through the lyrics challenge. I played with my clock speed a bit on this to record at different speeds. In the process I started listening to music here on mefimu and double speed. If you ever have the chance listen to the page at 96kHz. Pardon the language but I was in fucking heaven. . . . until Firefox disappeared and I lost these forms and had to re-upload the song. It was worth it and I will be doing much more of this, only not while upping a song. Happy 9 day old Year!

A cover of "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals that I threw together this morning, primarily featuring gamelan instrumentation. I'd sampled a bunch of gamelan instruments at my old college about a year ago, but never got around to doing anything with. So I pitch-shifted them to fit a western scale, and did this. The original version of this song happens to be one of my favorite songs EVER, btw.
