Midnight Sex Talk - Sex Magick Ever riffled through a book, or googled late into the night, to find the perfect spell to catch the person you really, really fancy? And then, after your shopping trip for ingredients, hurried home hunched over a plastic bag containing four candles, a sachet of cloves and a dead mackerel? Ever wondered if there really could be a way to control others people’s desires though magic, and whether Satan is involved? And have we, in the 21st century west, lost our sense of ritual? How many of you, for example, would admit to having made a voodoo doll? Our guests in the studio were Christine Moon, adventurous priestess-in-training, who just happened to be in town and agreed to come on at the last minute; Marco Lovestar, the hero of the night; and Mystery Borealis, artist, stripper and all round party girl. During the show, you will hear me make the mistake of saying the moon ‘wasn’t doing anything very interesting at the moment.’ I was...

Midnight Sex Talk - Sex Toys - Are They Really Necessary? Thought that might get you reading! Here at Chateau Midnight Sex Talk, we love sex toys; it would be positively heretical not to. But sometimes you have to stop and think: as they morph inexorably from ‘plaything’ to ‘absolute necessity’, have they evolved too far? (Ditto lube.) Joining us in the studio is Angel from Sh! Womenstore, the first and still the best of the women-friendly, (hell, people-friendly), sex shops, and we’ve got an interview with Bertie from Mantric, who sell pretty nice stuff too, over the internet. We’re taking a look at the most popular toys, casting a curious eye over the more interesting, excessive, and expensive, offerings currently on the market, and dropping a few hints and health warnings into the mix. This one was first broadcast on Sunday 13th March 2005. Midnight Sex Talk is taking a rest from the studio for a while, but if you want to drop us a line, or tel...

From men to women and back again, via pegging, figging and fisting - God knows how we’ve managed to fit it all in! In the studio we’ve got Tim Fountain, whose seriously interactive one-man show ‘Sex Addict’ was a big hit at Edinburgh and the Royal Court Theatre, and the inimitable Al Needham joins us by phone. Check it out - this is one of our funniest shows ever. This one was first broadcast on Sunday 27th March 2005. Midnight Sex Talk is taking a rest from the studio for a while, but if you want to drop us a line, or tell us what you’d like to hear more of, you can email us any time at midnightsextalk at gmail dot com.
Midnight Sex Talk - Mother’s Day Psycho Special! Especially for Mother’s Day, we’re pondering the cult of the serial killer, and looking at why these ultimate transgressors, who are on the extreme sexual margins of society, get quite so much attention, sometimes to the point of apparent canonisation. Al Needham tells us what it was like growing up in the seventies in the shadow of the Yorkshire Ripper, and Alex Fitch talks up the daddy of the modern day psychos, Ed Gein. Jeffrey Dahmer, Dennis Nielsen and Ted Bundy get a look-in, and no show like this would be complete without the Wests. Sadly, our guest couldn’t make it at the last minute, but rest assured he was a celebrity - his ex-boyfriend was Denis Nielsen’s unemployment officer! NEWS! This is our last live show of the current season. Kim is very busy in a new job, and I’m writing my book.

Midnight Sex Talk - Decline of the Gay Bar? Back in the 1990s, gay bars and clubs were the places to be. Everyone there seemed to be partying faster and harder, and more attractively, than anyone else. But everything’s changed a bit since then. What we’re asking this week is: have hook-up sites like Gaydar taken the emphasis away from the bar scene, and levelled the playing field a bit? And as the scene becomes more mainstream, how have the bars evolved in order to keep their identity? We’ve got interviews with Pete, a long-term scene-goer, Russell from Halfway to Heaven, and Wendy, manager of the Retro Bar in Charing Cross. What do you think? Do you hate bars, and find the whole thing a massive, pretentious bore? Or do you love them? Do you think that trying to meet someone on the internet is just for losers? Or has Gaydar changed your life? Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us a...

Midnight Sex Talk - Prostitution and the New UK Laws There’s been a lot going on with our sex laws recently here in the UK. As with the abortion debate, where sex work is concerned there’s the usual forest of moral panic to negotiate, before you get anywhere near the people who actually do it, or who work with those who do. And media stereotypes abound - there’s either the desperate drug addict working the street, Miss Whiplash of the suburbs, or the middle class girl who’s hoping to get a book deal out of it. However, whatever happens in parliament, no-one is going to stop selling sex, or paying for it, anytime soon. In the studio we’ve got Jahnet DeLight to give us her take on it all, and we’ve got interviews with Ana Lopes of the International Union of Sex Workers and Cari Mitchell of the English Collective of Prostitutes. Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us ...

Midnight Sex Talk - Addiction

Midnight Sex Talk - Addiction Everyone’s an addict now, apparently. This week’s Midnight Sex Talk looks at sex addiction (does it really exist?) and also what addiction can do to a relationship. If you’re with someone who’s an addict, (and that could be drink, drugs, gambling etc, or, of course, sex), there are three (or more) of you in that relationship, whether you like it or not. Love itself is an addiction, and can mimic a lot of the same behaviours. Either way, you end up doing things you’d never imagine. Suzanne Noble who, among other things, makes the excellent Modern Loving series of sex guides, joins us to help unravel it all. Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us at MidnightSexTalk.com. Download audio file (midnight_sex_talk_-_addiction.mp3)

Midnight Sex Talk - Infidelity We really should have done this show as an all-night charity marathon, there’s so much to talk about. It would be like They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? but no-one would get tired. As usual, however, Midnight Sex Talk will be giving you the essence of the subject in just 60 high-quality minutes. Have you played away? Have you discovered your other half at it? How did you find out? Was it tell-tale bruises, stubble burn or a simple stray email? Do you think infidelity is even an issue? Is monogamy a pointless social construct that puts needless pressure on people? Or is it a valuable rule to arrange your life around? Helping things along in the studio is journalist Piers Hernu, who can be spotted doing all kinds of loveable rogue-type things around the darker parts of the global village. We’ve also got an interview with Stephen Green of Christian Voice. Enough said! Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-1...

Midnight Sex Talk - Internet Censorship This week we’re looking at the Scottish Executive’s consultation paper on the possession of what they call ‘extreme pornographic images’. If what they’re suggesting becomes law, it could set us back decades in terms of free speech, as well as cause endless misery to those who are exploring their sexuality, not to mention artists. Our guests this week are lobbyist Demolition Red from Backlash, and campaigner/adventurer UKRudeGirl”. Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us at MidnightSexTalk.com.
Midnight Sex Talk - Pain & Pleasure BDSM, CP, topping, bottoming - what does all this mean to you? Do you think that the first two are network protocols, and that the others must be cookery terms, even though you’ve never heard Nigella mention them? Or are you a fully fledged member of your local community, and a regular attendee of the kind of club that the tabloids send undercover reporters to, (even though they already know what they’re going to write)? Do you think that inflicting physical pain on someone, (or having it done to you) however consensually, is simply torture by another name? Or is it the ultimate transfer of power, and the only true way to work out your own needs and desires? Helping us untangle it all are Monkey and Mistress Vamp from Unfettered, which hosts the annual Kinkfest. Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us here. Download audio file (midnight_sex_talk_-_p...

Midnight Sex Talk - Media Massacre! We had to turn on our own sooner or later, or at least give it a darn good going-over. In the company of Al Needham, live on the show for the first time, Midnight Sex Talk is taking a long hard look at the mainstream media’s influence over our sexual lives. Are celebrity shagfests, and tit jobs for girlfriends offered as prizes, taking us where we don’t really want to go? Or are magazines right in claiming, like certain rappers, that they’re simply reflecting back what we’ve been thinking all along? Do you believe that women’s magazines are really promoting sexual liberation, or just another set of rules for keeping your man? Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us here. Download audio file (midnight_sex_talk_-_media_massacre.mp3)

Midnight Sex Talk delves deep into London’s seamy past: stews, molly houses and the clap. It was just like today, really, but with different clothing, and without the latex condoms and antibiotics. You can hear presenter and Voiceover King Piers Gibbon reading out some historical sleaze; Matthew Glamorre talking about Polari, the the gay slang that grew out of C18 thieves-and-theatre culture; and, by coincidence, our first interview with John Constable about Cross Bones in Southwark. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got Hallie Rubenhold talking about her book on Harris’s List, the gentleman consumer’s guide to the prostitutes of eighteenth century London. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got Hallie Rubenhold talking about her book on Harris’s List, the gentleman consumer’s guide to the prostitutes of eighteenth century London.
We said we’d go back, and we did. Midnight Sex Talk returned to Cross Bones on Monday night for a proper celebration of the outcast dead, with much singing, drinking and beating of drums. We then processed from the Ship, in Borough Road, (said to be the most haunted pub in the area) to the site in Red Cross Way. As anyone might have expected, the dark side of Old Southwark slipped out through the cracks when some of the local feral children appeared, (including a few who were old enough to know better), threw fireworks at our 60-strong party and then punched somebody on the nose. Such is Halloween… The most moving part of the ceremony was when we read out the names of those buried there, and then hung tributes on the gate. In the studio we’ve got Mistress of Ceremonies Jahnet Delight, and founding visionary John Constable, to tell us all about this neglected historical site.

Your friends have more influence over your sex life than you realise. On the good side, they can weed out the munters and beasts (at least when things get really bad), provide a body part to cry on when you get dumped, and keep the relationship gene pool open by inviting you to their parties. On the less good side, they either sleep with your intended or ostracise them, gossip about you, or turn on you in unexpected ways when your sexual behaviour violates the unspoken law of The Group. Have you ever slept with a friend and regretted it? Has a friend ever done the dirty with your lover, in secret? Have you started hiding your new partners from your friends, because you just know they’ll disapprove? The inimitable Al Needham will be sharing his thoughts on these ever-present dilemmas. Midnight Sex Talk is broadcast on alternate Sunday nights, from 11.30pm-12.30am, on Resonance 104.4 FM. More info about us here.
You’d think society would finally have moved on from putting pressure on women to reproduce, and would now lay off all attempts at forced decision-making on their behalf, preferring to use its moral energy for things like stopping wars. But no. Whatever a woman does, it’s wrong. There’s much ranting about perceived overbreeding by (usually working class) teenage girls, but you’ll hear just as many accusations of ’selfishness’, (definition, please), on the part of middle class, professional women who’ve got no intention of having kids. It’s funny how no-one ever truly ties these arguments together, isn’t it? Because the word eugenics just might come trickling out of the woodwork. There’s still a taboo about not wanting to have children, due to a lingering misogyny that says that a woman who is not a mother is somehow incomplete, and has not fulfilled her true role in life. It’s even worse for those who’ve already...

There’s still a taboo about not wanting to have children, due to a lingering misogyny that says that a woman who is not a mother is somehow incomplete, and has not fulfilled her true role in life. It’s even worse for those who’ve already had children, and regret it. The writer Lionel Shriver has done more than anyone else to open up this debate, in her prizewinning novel We Need To Talk About Kevin. The story behind how this book finally came to be published in the UK illustrates her point even more firmly, and depressingly. The flipside of all this is the legions of women rushing to have IVF when there are thousands of babies and children who are desperately in need of a home. Are we still so dynastically obsessed? In the studio we’ve got a healthcare ethicist to unravel the cat’s cradle of arguments around the issue of IVF and reproductive choice; we’ll be hearing from Glenda, who is happily married with zero children; and Dr Ben is returning to help us understand the medical side of it all.
Do I really need to explain this week’s subject matter? The rise of net porn has elevated the humble wank to a status beyond all imagining. As we shall see, however, past societies have not always been so kind to the masturbator. For the sake of academic gravity, you can study more here. Note the cute product placement further down. We’ll be hearing from Al Needham, (left), who’s in fine form as usual. And in the studio we’ve got Dolly Ginsberg, girl about town and all-round creative artiste, who will, among other things, be explaining the similarity between having one off the wrist and the family-friendly pastime known as DIY. Please note: to receive the MP3 of this podcast, you must be subscribed to the feed! Download audio file (midnight_sex_talk_-_masturbation.mp3)

Midnight Sex Talk this week was a feast of information. A big thank you to clinical geneticist Dr Adam Shaw for explaining so much so clearly. We started off by talking about The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan (1978), which I think, for a lot of people, was a seminal early introduction to incest; in literature and elsewhere. I well remember the smells from that book, and the giggles at school. You’ll here the word consanguinity a lot. A consanguineous marriage is between any blood-related people, but not necessarily closely; it’s more accepted in some cultures than others. Have a look at the studies of kibbutz children and Chinese arranged marriages, where tiny girls were sent off to the future boy-husband’s family for pre-marital conditioning. The studies tell us that familiarity breeds contempt, and after growing up together as children, most people would rather go and live in a poorly-heated shed at the South Pole than get it together as man and wife.
Originally aired June 19th 2005. “We had a packed Midnight Sex Talk on Sunday, so packed that I didn’t get a chance to go off on one about some of my past experiences. Probably just as well, really. ‘Ollie’ talked us through life of a bisexual man, and Marc from Bicon told us about this year’s bisexual shindig in Worcester, 25-29th August. Any excuse for a party - it’s not all about activism. Mind you, as we know, anyone who doesn’t have a strict gay-or-straight identity gets their share of attitude, from both sides. We all need a safe space now and again. Emily Dubberley, very busy author of the recently published Brief Encounters - The Women’s Guide To Casual Sex, gave us the lowdown on bi-curiosity. No show about bisexuality could avoid mentioning David Bowie, and the alleged caught-in-bed-with-Mick-Jagger story, despite the fact that his public declaration in the early seventies can be seen as a bit of a publicity stunt. Whatever whatever, he inspired a lot of people. As did Tom Robinson, who had the balls to sing about being gay long before anyone else did, and then had the even bigger balls to change direction and take the flak for it.” And Dr Who now has a bisexual character, inter-galactic time-traveller Captain Jack Harkness. In a way, how could a time-traveller be anything other than bi? See also: Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. SpongeBob Squarepants put in an appearance, as did Top Cat.
What a superb line-up on Midnight Sex Talk this week! For a start, we achieved a most enlightening encounter with The Reverend D Wayne Love of Alabama 3, who spoke from the upstairs room about his extensive exploits with the ladies. There’s something very special he likes done with a toothbrush, girls! We also managed to get the sublime Marianne Hyatt on the phone, who’s up in Edinburgh right now in satirical cabaret A Girl Called George, and who has a very useful technique for getting groupies to back off. We garnered drunken quotes from a wide selection of musicians, who pretty much agreed that The Code Of The Road (see Rule #1) still holds good. (Above, the Reverend, taken from efestivals.co.uk where yet more divine portraits are available as e-cards.) Download audio file (midnight_sex_talk_14-08-05.mp3)
