Emin and Adnan were having dinner in downtown restaurant in Baku over the summer, when suddenly the two video bloggers were attacked, later wound up in jail, and they remain behind bars today awaiting trial for the charge of “hooliganism”. What happened in that restaurant that night? Who would be targetting video bloggers and grassroots youth acitivists in Azerbaijan? What is the situation for a journalist, blogger or a citizen reporter in that nation? My guest is Azeri blogger Ali Novruzov, a friend of both Emin and Adnan who was among the first to hear what had happened. He has written and continues to write about their case and joins me in this podcast to discuss this issue. Bananas! is the story of the Banana industry’s use of a chemical known as Nemagon, a highly toxic chemical compound used for spraying banana trees throughout the 60’s and 70’s. The pesticide has grave effects on the health of any mammal, as it caused massive levels of male sterility among banana workers, as well as high levels of cancer. Despite knowing the effects of the pesticide on humans, companies including Dole (one of the world’s largest banana growers) sprayed fields anyway without informing or making any effort to protect workers. I had not heard about this film before today, and I have only begun to read specifically about Nemagon. But I very much intend to see the film when it comes to Amsterdam next month, as well as interview the director and perhaps some other parties involved in this issue. I’m sure you’re hoping I talk to Dole… I’ll see what I can do, large corporations don’t normally have time for we the independent reporters out there.
Sitting in as far East as geographic Europe goes, questions about where we are and how things here differ from things over there arise. While in Western Europe issues regarding climate change are high on the public agenda, how does that issue fair in the East? On this particular night in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, I sit down with Sergio of Eurotopics.net to hear about what their project is about and how he sees the concerns of Europe, from West to East and everything in between.
Hackers and Healthcare Part II (podcast #311)

Part II of my interviews with hackers at HAR2009 earlier this month. Once again I’m asking people from different countries how their healthcare system works. This time I speak with a Brazilian, a Slovakian, a Dane, and a Swiss person, who tell me their experiences with insurance, doctors, hospitals and much more. If you haven’t heard part 1, I recommend you go back and hear it first before listening to these. The point of doing these interviews was not to somehow gather examples of how public or national healthcare is great, rather it is to show people throughout the world, especially in the US where the government could possibly adopt a public insurance option, how it works (well or not so well) for other nations.
Anytime you find yourself at an open air international hacker festival you are sure to be surrounded by people from all over the world. Being located in the Netherlands, most campers come from somewhere in Europe, though plenty of North Americans and a few South Americans as well as Asians manage to make the trip. With the mainstream media abuzz with reports about the struggle in the United States to adopt a public health insurance option, I have been wanting to present testimony from regular people who have lived their entire lives in nations with national healthcare or other kinds of healthcare systems. How does it work in their country? What are the problems? How much do the basic things like doctor visits, hospital stays, and so on, cost? I set out to find campers from different countries, to ask them these questions. This is part 1 of what I learned. Related Posts: bm96_060117: National Health at Risk in Europe?
People in the US and around the world are used to getting their fruits and veggies from California. But will Cali be able to deliver if their water system collapses? My guest Dr. Juliet Christian-Smith, Senior Research Associate with the Pacific Institute’s Water Program, joins me to discuss their report “Sustaining California Agriculture in an Uncertain Future”. The report lays out how the state’s agriculture can survive through water conservation and new irrigation methods. We get into large and small scale farms as well as the role of the federal, state, and local government. Above all is the question of whether or not producers will do what needs to be done, or are we looking at the end of an era.
Only a few more days of my Portugal-Family vacation remain. Today I’m quickly checking in with a video I captured in the Bica, downtown Lisbon, over the weekend. What initially looked like a demonstration coming way, very quickly turns out to be a scene from a film being shot in my neighborhood. Kind of shame, looked like it would have been a great protest.

The Union of Concerned Scientists put out a report recently which runs down the last decade of genetically modified crops. As you know thats a topic that greatly concerns this website; what genetically modified crops have done to and for the world. Although GMO crops have only been in use for about a decade, the report looks at this decade in terms of yield/production as well as the impact these crops have had on the environment. The results, as you can read and hear about, are poor for a technology that is supposed to save the world from hunger. In fact, it turns out there are a few other methods that have proven far more productive than genetically modified crops. In this video entry I go over the biggest conclusions of the report. I recommend you also have a look for yourself, don’t just take my word for it.
Hugh Timmerman has been gathering facts based on his own memory of living under occupation in world war II Holland. The events that took place before his eyes and in his family home would forever be burned into his memory and remain something he wanted to better understand. More than 65 years later his research and his travels have helped him piece together the story of the allied plane that crashed on his property, as well as the stories of all the soldiers that died on his family farm. This month Hugh returned to the Netherlands from his home in Canada, to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary. Together we sat down to do this podcast, part 1 of 2, on what he remembers from his childhood during the war, his experience as an immigrant in Canada, and how he went about putting together this book. His Book: Bombers in the Night Sky The music of Utah Phillips used throughout this program.

Marianne Betterly started as a concerned citizen in her community, at first working on the topic of air pollution and global warming. Working on that topic would eventually take her to the topic of the amazon and sustainability. One of several topics she has focused on has been soy, specifically the soy agriculture in the amazon; how it works and its side effects. We talk about how she started getting into this topic, the big companies involved in Soy in the amazon, GMO soy and how it works, who is consuming it, the situation for indiginous people, to eat soy or to not eat soy, etc. Please note that this is only the beginning when it comes to breaking down the very complex topic of soy around the world, in the coming weeks I hope to help answer many of the questions that remain after this program. betterly.com mariri.net Marianne passed on this note after the interview: I never mentioned biofuels - using soy - another future use of soy. I also didn’t mention how important the Amazon is to sustaining our air and water…..The Amazon is responsible for a fifth of the total volume of fresh water entering the oceans worldwide. If the deforestation does not slow down/stop we will lose 40% in the next 20 or so years, thereby reducing the fresh water to the world by approximately 10%. This is a global issue - along with the increasing amounts of herbicides/pesticides that are being dumped on crops, soil, into streams and rivers.

This is a not a vlog about a global problem or unreported issue. Instead its a quick highlight film as part of a video entry for vlogeurope 08, which took place over the weekend in Budapest, Hungary. Initially it was a Budapest A to Z film, but I scrapped that Idea around the letter P. I think. Being at the 4th annual vlog europe, an interesting and relaxed conference I’ve had the pleasure of attending since the first edition in Amsterdam, is always a great source of inspiration and affirmation of how far we’ve come as a community. The highlight of the conference had to have been the global online meeting where vloggers on 3 continents took turns speaking about their projects, their successes, their failures, the situation in various parts of the world, and of course - cracking some jokes. Back to regular programming tomorrow. Download Podcast Video

In an effort to get this investigative report out there, I’m posting Greg Palast and Robert Kennedy Jr.’s Steal Back Your Vote Comic. YES, it is a comic, and YES it is an eye opening investigative report. If you do download and read it, also consider sending a contribution to them on their website. I sent them a few bucks as I feel their work is essential if the American election system is ever to really become a democracy. Download Ebook

It is the single most common question I’m asked after I mention my program and my dedication to using podcasting as a vehicle for reporting and journalism: Can you make a living that way? The answer has never been simple and over the brief 4 year period that podcasting has existed, that answer has changed for some people. My guest is a longtime friend of this program, Richard Bluestein, the person behind Yeast Radio and Insane Films, with his latest project - The Untitled Show, also on Insane Films. He explains his experience and understanding of what has happened in his podcasting career, and what he can and CAN’T accept as an artist and internet content creator. During the program we get into the heart of all those common questions people have about this realm of podcasting, making money to live as a podcaster, and what place podcasting has next to all other media and within a society. One final note if you happen to be in Europe and have a job for an excellent video...

The voting computers they use throughout the state, especially those in Union County, have not met necessary requirements.
On the surface it is an interview about Tom’s work with Arabic Script. But really, it is about world culture and the effects of the war in Lebanon. I spent a good part of a saturday at his home in Amsterdam where we recorded this program with the focus being on how his interest in Arabic developed. However don’t let the title or my words here fool you, the information and stories contained here go far beyond arabic script and into topics such as the War in Lebanon, Armenians seeking asylum in the Netherlands, writing an Arabic manual for the Dutch military, the orgin of Middle Eastern hospitality, and oh-so much more. Towards the end of the program we mention the Decotype website where you can click on the presentation and see what we’re talking about. Its short and addresses the recent changes in Zimbabwe where opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has now joined in the government of Robert Mugabe as prime minister. Which begs the question, is this good news? Oh and yes the video at the end comes from the fine people at the guardian.co.uk. Download Podcast Video

This video entry is to explain some recent goings-on as well as tell about a good friend who gave up growing a green lawn in suburbia. Around the same time he was telling me this, I had also visited the Jersey shore where there were reports of an dangerous explosion in the Jelly Fish population. The causes? Nitrogen from all the fertilizers people use on their lawns that washes into the ocean. Another cause, warm water from the Oyster Bay nuclear power plant nearby. My focus here is more on the fertilizer and energy wasted on lawn care versus the price we pay collectively for the damage done to the environment. This situation was very well illustrated by a recent edition of On Point from NPR. Wherever you live, I encourage you to stop watering the lawn, stop fertilizing, take a stand in your everyday life and change this rediculous and dangerous suburban tradition. Download Podcast Video
